Ian: (English Edition) (The O'Connor Brothers Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 29 ratings

A year ago, she begged me to stay.
A year later, it’s my turn to beg her not to go.
My obsession. My downfall.
I tried to resist, to keep her at a distance.
I tried to save myself.
But no one will be saved here, not even a selfish bastard like me.
My life has always been about sport and family, including my stupid brothers. Until that night, the night I made the worst decision of my life.
And I’m still paying the price for it.
We both are.
But the time has come to take back control of the situation, to risk it all, to convince her to let me in, because she can’t be anything other than mine.

I am Ian O’Connor, and I’m about to accept this challenge: to try and hold on to the only woman I’ll ever be able to love.
And even if I already know how this badly written romance is going to end, I won’t back away. This time, I’m going all the way. Because I only want her.
And I have no intention of losing her.
I’m an O’Connor, and the O’Connors never lose.

My God this book.... nobody has made me cry more with her work as much as A.S. Kelly has done in the 3 books I've read so far. I'm not sure I like that very much (kidding).

This one is simply AMAZING. I'm trying really hard to find words to write a review that will explain how much this book broke my heart before it got taped back together. This story is about two people who have lost so much in their life and are doing everything they can to put on the brave face for the word while suffering on the inside.

They both got issues that run deep and being together feels just right even when they can't explain why. I liked Riley but to say I loved Ian is an understatement of the year. That broken beautiful man can run straight into my arms any time he wants.

"I don't want to be a distraction from your loneliness. I don't want to be the last drop of emptiness that fills you. I don't want to be something you look for to hide away from the rest of the world. I just want you to be mine!" *swoon*.

I'm a HUGE fan and I'm so looking forward to seeing next O'Connor finding his happiness.

Listened to the story on Audible. The accents were nice on both the male and female narrators; a little over the top, but a solid performance by both. There was a gay character that was voiced weird though. I wasn't totally a fan of the female narrator doing the dialogue in the male POV chapters and vice versa; took me out of the story a bit, still a decent audio.

There's some sweet moments between Ian and Riley, and I liked the whole second chance scenario. The story just didn't flow very well. There's flashback scenes; 3 years ago, 2 years ago, and 1 year ago, but they didn't really flow into the story well. I wanted more connection between Riley and Ian too. Riley is melancholy for most of the story; low self-esteem and depressing, so I wasn't a fan of that. She has her reasons, but we don't get any reasons why for a long time, so I wasn't sympathizing with her. Riley's brother plays on the same rugby team as Ian; Riley's brother sees the connection between Riley and Ian, so he plays a bit of matchmaker. Ian is dealing with some family issues, so he's a jerk to Riley and pushes her away. Riley and Ian both don't handle it well over the years they know each other, but they can't deny the pull between them. I liked the story dealing with Ian's family. There's also some good passion between Ian and Riley. Overall, there's some good elements to the story; I was entertained, but the writing just didn't grab me.

Ian is a man who still carries the emotional scars of his past with him. He is loyal and willing to do anything for his family even if he has always felt like an outsider and focuses the rest of his attention on his career in rugby. Although he has deep feelings for his Riley, his teammate’s sister, he ended their relationship a year ago but now wants a second chance.

Riley has a painful past of her own and prefers to remain on the sidelines of her brother’s life. She learnt at an early age that men shouldn’t be trusted and when she broke that rule with Ian she was left devastated.

They can’t seem to stay away from each other but also have difficulty sharing their pasts and emotions with each other which makes their journey full of angst and drama but the end result is well worth the ride. I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook and thought the narrators were a perfect place and had you feeling like you were in Ireland as well.

Ian by A. S. Kelly is book One in The O'Connor Brothers Series. This is the story of Ian and Riley who have been dancing around their feelings. Ian has been knocked off his socks from their first meeting when Riley 'saved him' from a lady at a party. Ian knows that Riley is someone you have to be all in for but due to his reason he not ready until he finds that he is. I enjoyed reading their story and that this touched on his father who was going through a loss in his health.

This book is a real page turner. I loved it from beginning to end. Ian is a rugby player. He takes care of his parents. His dad's health is on the decline. Ian decided it was time to call his brothers who have not been to see their parents in a long time. The two brothers don't get a long to well but Ian hopes they can get a long while they see their parents. Ian has a woman on his mind to. One he won't soon forget. When his team captain gets hurt on the field, Ian goes to the hospital to see him and the last person he expected to see was Riley. Riley did not expect to see Ian again after that one night years ago. Riley can't trust Ian. Getting into a relationship with Ian will not work. Ian is bound and determined to make Riley his. Will this relationship work out between the two of them, or will they both get hurt? Neither one is sure it will.

As much as I liked this story, I did not love it. The story moved backwards and forwards (mainly over a 3 year timeline), and I started getting slightly confused as I was never certain where the main couple, Ian and Riley, were at, in their, on again off again relationship. There was so much potential with the storyline, but I felt as a couple I couldn’t relate to them, there was so much hate between them, and not enough love, and way too much pushing and pulling in their relationship, I wasn’t invested in them as characters . So, while the story intrigued me lots. I wasn’t hooked into the story or the characters enough to give them more than a three star review. I wasn’t sure if it was enemies to lovers or second chance romance. It did have a family of hot Irish rugby players, but sadly the brother concerned didn’t float my boat so to say. The story was narrated beautifully by Ashley Taylor. Daniel Knight had a fantastic voice, and a super sexy accent, however, he didn’t seem to put emotion into the character, and at times came across as a bit wooden.

A story that takes your heart and crushes it, glues it and reduces it to a thousand pieces again. Two characters destroyed by a painful past. A story that makes you suffer. And a love that wins over everything, the one between Ian and Riley.
