- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2017I just ate one of the most delicious and enjoyable lunches ever. No. Not at a restaurant. Not at a friend's. At home, at my kitchen table. It was a simple lunch,: left over chicken, rice and fresh tomatoes. I've eaten it many times before, but I can honestly say that I have never tasted it with such deliciousness. .
What happened?
Lunch followed my reading of Ian Tuhovsky's Mindfulness. I just got it a few days ago and earmarked it for an early read. The title caught my attention. Of late it seems that anything to do with the mind, the brain and self discovery catches my attention. I'm so glad I did.
I loved it! Kept a notebook beside me and took copious notes - not only because of the content, but because the language drew me in. What can I say, I'm an author and a junkie for a well turned phrase, and of those there were plenty. And it wasn't because the content was mind blowing, I've read it before, but never have I read it written so well. This was not a clinical summary of the author's knowledge, nor was it some quickly thrown-together,collective regurgitation of stuff found online. I found the book engaging, thoughtfully written and authentically presented. This was no flake writing, this was a man who knew the subject well and it was evident throughout the book.
So to get back to the lunch. Ian talked of being mindful of the small things, of being in the moment. These are things I try when I go walking, whether on my favorite neighborhood walk, or on the busy streets of the city. But I'd never brought it to the table before, not for a simple lunch made up of yesterday's leftovers and fresh tiny ripe tomatoes.
I decided that I was going to be mindful of my lunch. I consciously chewed the food, feeling the texture of the rice, the chicken as my teeth bit into the flesh and tore it off the the chicken leg bone. I tasted not just the chicken but the olive oil and the mediterranean herbs that I rubbed into the chicken leg before putting it in the oven last night. The combination together with the smattering of onions and garlic that I threw into the roaster last night created a lip smacking "jus." The jus was just right for the rice, and those tiny tomatoes burst like candy in my mouth. It felt as though my taste buds had suddenly awakened.
I will continue to work on being present in the moment. It makes everything so much more enjoyable.
And there is so much more. This is just the one thing and I will return to it time and time again.
YOU GOTTA GET THIS BOOK!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2017Reading this book turned my life around in my prayer time with God like never before. You see; I'm in the early stages of learning mindfulness, and I can say it really works. My prayer life is great, but you know deep inside there's so much more in just meditation alone. This book gave me the answers I needed to press in deeper when I prayed and meditated with mindfulness. There's no formula or gadget to this, all you need to have is an open heart for the Spirit of God to use for His Kingdom here on earth.
Reading this book I got to see and understand that meditation and mindfulness works with each other with the goal in mind that meditation is to bring the body and mind together so they can work as a single unit. I like the definition of mindfulness, which is “paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, nonjudgmental." On the other hand, you can say, mindfulness belongs to those who are focused and steady kind of attention.
Practicing mindfulness and meditation for me on the positive side - my whole life changed around like:
Emotional stability - Regulating my state of mind (before mindfulness - all I can say is OMG!) - but now, I live in peace - no more stress. I'm in a happy place.
Physical stability - Exercise regularly everyday - I've lost over 42 pounds and still losing weight because of better eating habits.
You get the picture; all of this is happening because of this book.
I recommend this book to those who are at the beginning stages of mindfulness, as well as, meditation. It is written to those who can handle the truth about themselves and want to connect with their inner self to live by that authentic vision inside them. Thank you Ian Tuhovsky for putting it in bite size, so I can understand the basic principle of mindfulness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't have chosen a better introduction to mindfulness!
Ian, I hope you really do jump for joy when you read these because I tell you, that joy is well deserved.
My most valuable new addition to my life is the daily reading of personal development books, there is an ocean of knowledge out there and I'll skip the rest of this tired old metaphor. Your book was the first I've read on the topic of mindfulness and I doubt there exists a better piece of introductory material for the uninformed (or dabbling novice)
Clear, concise, fun and most importantly it was practical and immediately applicable in an easy and non-intimidating way. Undertaking a new practice can sometimes be intimidating like learning to swim or drive, and likewise with something so simple as sitting with yourself even, can for some be almost nonsensically confrontational. But the material in this book would (I imagine) ease even the most tentative learner into a new daily practice that will change their lives. I read my books on a kindle so it's easy to highlight sentences or paragraphs or whatever as you go and I can say there was at least one highlight worthy bit on every page. What I mean to say is you could take any one of those highlights those, little nuggets of literary gold and present it to a friend as a piece of advise and if they could absorb it, it would make a difference in their life.
I'm rambling a bit now but I could truly keep writing all day. Just a couple more things I promise xD
I've been practising the techniques provided in the pages of this book for only a few days and already feel a profound change in my life (I'm one of them quick learner types but still!) I intend to make this a part of my day indefinitely and continue learning more in depth about mindfulness.
Thank you! for penning this little intro to the mind and the state it's yearning for, please keep writing!

p.s to anyone else who read this review remember, books don't change your life. You change your life. Books like this and many others give you the tools or "build your wheel" but you've gotta spin it. I say this because the negative reviews I see on books like this one usually say "uhh this book is rubbish I didn't notice any change at all" well buddy change comes from within so maybe you should write a review on your life instead.
Right that's enough keyboard for me for one day sorry for the babbling. Great book. Peace and love to you all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes meditation sound really easy and disspells the "mystery" around it!
I did an 8 week long mindfulness workshop (no, not all day, every day for 8 week, but 8 Saturdays in a row for 2 1/2 hours a week) and kept thinking that I needed to get back into the practice. This book got me to get myself back onto the cushion! The whole time I was reading it, I kept thinking of people I want to reccomend it to, but à little worried they might think I was getting weird going on about meditation and paying close attention (like 15-20 minutes) on a simple thing like a raisin ! But this book definitely takes the mystery out of meditation and is a fantastic place for beginners to start. Will definitely reccomend around me.
