- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2024I am always fascinated by the story of Icarus. Especially after spending five weeks around the Icarian Sea.
This was the best version written about Icarus’ fate. The author magnificently takes the reader into the moment and the surroundings. I could picture every detail and feelings of the characters. Beautiful book!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2019There's already a lot to love about the story of Icarus - in fact it was that comfortable familiarity that brought me to read this version. With that being said this book was startling in how tenderly it was written.
Experiencing the story through the eyes of an awkward and cloistered twelve year old was a stroke of pure genius that made a nearly unapproachable literary character into someone so powerfully human you couldn't help but shamble along with him as he took his first trepidatious steps towards adulthood.
But it isn't just Icarus, all the other characters and the setting are written with a quiet dignity. It provides an emotionally rich backdrop before sending the reader on a series of misadventures.
I found my heart melting with Icarus' glorious wings. Would strongly suggest this book to just about anyone - those who love Greek myth, those who have no idea who Icarus is, those looking for an easy conversational read, those looking for a quirky adventure, or those looking for a taste of the bittersweet complexity of human existence.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2023Adam Wing does a phenomenal job bringing the tragedy of Icarus to life with new beats that keep the story fresh and relatable. More than worth the read for any fan of Greek Mythology.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2024I was immediately captivated with the author’s writing style. This was a story I always wanted to be lengthened and elaborated on, and this didn’t fail! The author thoroughly did his research on the characters, and wrote it in a new light of his own creation! If I could rate higher than 5 stars I would!! You can literally picture the book while you read it!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2019I refrained from pulling my old mythology books off the shelf to refresh my memory of the story of Icarus before reading Adam's Wing's take. That was the best approach, as Wing's Icarus provides enough of the story's pillars (King Minos, the Labyrinth, Daedalus' inventions) to bring forth those memories while creating entirely new ones.
We already know the ultimate fate of Icarus, and that it involves a healthy dose of hubris. Never before have we come to know the character so well, though. The hubris we so often associate with him, a flaw for which he pays the price, may well have belonged to another. And some of the most powerful and heart-wrenching tragedies occur even before Icarus dons his wings.
This is a wonderful book, carefully constructed out of a true desire to tell the story. Every sentence reads as though it was painstakingly and lovingly crafted, every word perfectly placed. I look forward to reading more from Adam Wing.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2020After reading Adam Wing's novella, Matriarch, I was excited to read his take on the Greek myth of Icarus. I was not disappointed. Author Wing has a talent for using vivid imagery, placing the reader firmly in the setting, while still allowing a reader to use his own imagination to envision the story. This creative take on the famous Greek myth was original and fascinating. From the first page, Icarus (Ik) captivated me. The way Wing pits the physical beauty of Crete against the tyranny of King Minos adds another layer of subtle irony of the story. I won't give away any spoilers but the relationship between Daedalus and Icarus is as relevant today as it would have been hundreds of years ago. What resonated most for me in this book was the reflection on what freedom truly means. I would definitely add Icarus to your TBR pile!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2020Admittedly I did not know really anything of Icarus before reading this book. It took me a few pages to get into the world, but once I got it, I was hooked. I felt strongly in both the “Son” and “Father” sections.
I could see each characters’ sides and wanted their desires. The relationship Icarus builds with Oentas was interesting and not what I expected but in reading it I couldn’t imagine it happening differently. The mysteries of the labyrinth intrigued me and I wanted to know more. The end threw me for a loop but
after finishing the book and researching the original story I realized I should have known it was coming.
But still. For going in blindly, I was peasantry surprised with this unique retelling
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2020Wing does an amazing job simultaneously telling a coming-of-age story as well as a tale of bitter and heartbroken middle age. Weaving together the stories of Icarus and his father, Wing made me feel the excitement and uncertaintly of a young Icarus and the anxious entrapment of a father willing to do anything to save his son. The setting feels both ancient and modern as I identified so deeply with both of the characters and the powerful structures and people arrayed against them. It was a page turner, even though I knew where the story was headed. Wing has done a fantastic job of taking a brief Greek take and making is something truly unique and timeless. I can't wait to check out more of Wing's writing, even if he breaks my heart again. For writing this good, I'm ready to be hurt.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly well-written retelling of the classical story!
I love ancient Greece and this was a great retelling of the classical story of Icarus! I am one of those people who cry (a lot!) when sad things happen to characters I care about and since we all know how the classical story of Icarus ends, I tried my very best to not get so attached to Ik (Icarus) in this novel. But it was impossible! Wing has managed to create such a real character - real person - that I became very attached to Ik despite my best efforts to not get so emotionally attached. And despite knowing how it would end, I still found myself desperately hoping that maybe, just maybe, the Fates would have a different ending in store for him this time. And it’s not just Ik: all characters are well-written with interesting layers. My feelings about Ik’s father, Daedalus, ranged from “he seems like a mean father” to “oh, he would truly sacrifice everything for his son” to “I feel so bad for him” to “wow that’s an impressive mind he’s got there.” And that is the definition of intriguing characters! I highly recommend this book, it’s a truly well-written retelling of the classical story of Icarus!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Even though I already knew how it would end, Wing has a way of making you care for the characters and hope for a different ending than what you know is coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read
This is a book where myth and legend are carefully curated into a well-crafted tale.
In his intro, Mr Wing explains his objectives, which I interpreted as crafting a balance between the essence of the myth and melding it with what we know of scientific possibilities in the 21st Century.
But this book is so much more than that. This book explores such a wide range of compelling themes that I found myself being drawn into the world, times this book is set in and its themes which still weave through the fabric of our society today. It is simply enthralling with a good pace and wonderful scene setting and of course the story narrative itself.
This is a masterful creation and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
