Imperfect: MM Complicated, Screwed-Up Relationships Kindle Edition
Two men. One bored and restless, the other broken and traumatised. How will a chance meeting in a crowded café change both their lives forever?
With looks, money, and a high-flying career, to the outside world Josh Cooper has it all. But looks can be deceiving. Trapped in a claustrophobic relationship, he seeks escape in a series of meaningless and anonymous sexual encounters.
A violent and abusive past has left Alex Fulbright wary of getting involved with another man. All he wants is to live a quiet life and put his painful history behind him.
From tentative beginnings, Josh and Alex eventually come to find the love with each other that neither thought they would ever have. But life isn’t perfect, and neither man is quite who he seems. Both have secrets and when these are dragged into the open, the life they had planned to build together is blown apart, leaving their happy ever after no longer the certainty it was.

About the author

Making Your Heart Pound... One Beat at a Time.
The stories I only ever told myself were set in a world where boy met boy, where best friends became more, where the hero rescued not the damsel but the hot guy he'd been secretly crushing on.
I wanted to read those stories. I craved to read those stories. But those stories weren't out there. Or that's what I thought, until one Christmas, when I unwrapped a shiny new e-reader. All it took was a few clicks, and my world changed forever.
I found my tribe.
But there is life outside of MM & gay romantic fiction in all its configurations. Allegedly.
When I'm forced to switch off the trusty, faithful word machine, there's a husband to feed and talk to, pubs to drink in, and cake to eat. I love to do all those things and more, before I rush back to write all the words.
I'm a Londoner, born and bred, but I now live just outside the big bad city but close enough to hop on a train so I can get my regular metropolitan fix.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2016Dramatic, angsty, sexy, and fraught with all sorts of strife--I absolutely loved it :) I need more from this author PLEASE :)
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2015I think this book works as a compelling piece of dramatic fiction, rather than a romance. The main character, Josh, is an anti-hero and is fairly unlikable through most of the book. He cheats on his boyfriend, this time as he pursues a young, vulnerable man named Alex. He gets mad at his current boyfriend for not wanting to have sex in a dirty alley with other men grunting and sweating nearby, he refers to his best female friend as "too curvy" (read, fat), and he is prone to jealous rages even though he is the one cheating.
SPOILERS!!!
Alex has suffered from domestic abuse in the past, and Josh victimizes him further by demanding him to prove that he's not a "slut" because he was gang raped by his last boyfriend and his cronies. That part was really tough to read and made me extremely uneasy. Josh alternates between tender concern and jealous rages, which is the hallmark of an abusive relationship.
The writing in this book was compelling with a breezy style that is easy to read, even if the subject matter isn’t. For fans of m/m romance, this isn’t a sweet, tender love story. I think it works as a piece of dark fiction, but I can't in good conscience call it a romance because there is nothing romantic about abuse.
Read it through the lens of a dramatic, tragic fiction and I think it's a solid piece of writing.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2015Josh, a good looking lawyer, is in a dead-end relationship with his live-in boyfriend when he meets a beautiful young guy, Alex, at a cafe. Though Josh is taken by Alex almost immediately, Josh doesn’t admit it to himself until they’ve gone on their first date. Josh had never been one for fidelity, but when Alex holds back and doesn’t want sex, he finds he is in no way disappointed. Instead he is intrigued with himself for sticking around. Before Josh realizes what is happening, he is falling for Alex in a way he doesn’t understand. By the time he admits to himself that he’s in love with Alex, it is long past due for him to break up with his boyfriend. To complicate things, Alex has been abused in the past, and Josh promises never to hurt him. Though the situation goes downhill and gets quite ugly, there is a happy ending.
I loved the beginning of this book, but when I found out Josh was a cheater, it made it difficult to like him. Even so, I kept the title in mind. This is about two men who are both imperfect in their own ways. They both have flaws, and the story seems like a practical reflection of life rather than a fairytale dream. Josh was never looking for a relationship, and wasn’t trying to cheat, but no one could have convinced him he would end up falling in love. Although Imperfect kept my attention with many surprises along the way, I was waiting for Josh to redeem himself. There was an opportunity for him to be Alex’s hero in the end, but he fails to take it and goes in the other direction instead. Despite my disappointment with Josh, I still was entertained and found the story enjoyable.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2015i loved everything about this book! i love reading her stuff she never disappoints!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2019Yes the main protagonist is imperfect, if imperfect is a synonym for a-hole. Look, A.E. Ryecart is an amazing author. But even Shakespeare himself couldn't make this main character appealing. I guess I found out today that cheating characters are a hard limit for me. Couldn't finish.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2016I liked the book although I didn't care for the cheating.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2016I think that the people who slammed the book because Josh was a cheater and treated Dan like crap should consider Dan was culpable too. Josh was horribly wrong for the way he handled his relationship with him, even Josh owned up to that, but Dan should have kicked Josh to the curb a long time ago.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2018Did not enjoy this story. This author can write good stories, but I don't think this was one of them. Josh was a cheating, lying, disrespectful human being. The only reason I can think of as to why anyone would be with him after knowing him is because Alex thought so little of himself. Wasn't worth my reading time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imperfect
I wasn't sure what to expect as I was new to the genre but I was thrilled with it. A perfect book to take on holiday and read when you're chilling. The plot was easy to follow and the characters and their actions were credible. Can't wait to read more by the author.

2.0 out of 5 stars Slow and boring
The first quarter was interesting and had a lot of promise but then the whole story bogged down and got boring quickly. Barely skimmed the last half as I couldn't get into it anymore. Sadly I can't recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars easy to connect with the characters and compelling reading
It was the first time I read anything in this genre, but I found it well written, easy to connect with the characters and compelling reading. There are dark moments, but coupled with lots of romance and fun too. Well worth reading and I would recommend it to everyone to try.

3.0 out of 5 stars Strong story
Real people, one damaged but working to grow stronger; the other a liar and a cheat- as many people are, and simply avoiding taking responsibility for the disrespect and hurt his choices will cause the people involved. YET, they grow to love and accept one another. HFN .

5.0 out of 5 stars ... holiday last week and found it to be a great first novel
I read this while on holiday last week and found it to be a great first novel. It's not a genre that I would normally select but it's very well written and the style of story telling made it a compelling read! There is romance, darkness, violence and twists and turns which keep you hooked. I will certainly look out for the author's next book.
