In Her Shadow Kindle Edition
Isabel’s life seemed perfect. Successful business, beautiful house, adoring husband. And then she was dead.
For four years Jessica has never doubted that her sister Isabel’s death was an accident. But when Jessica’s young daughter seems to know long-forgotten details about her aunt’s past, Jessica can’t shake the feeling that there’s a more sinister truth behind the tragedy.
As Jessica unearths disturbing revelations about her sister, and about the people she loved and trusted most, it becomes clear Isabel’s life was less than perfect and that Jessica’s might also be at risk.
Did someone murder Isabel? Are they now after Jessica and her family? The key seems to lie in the hands of a child. Can Isabel reveal the truth from beyond the grave, or is the answer closer to home?
In Her Shadow is a gripping tale of family secrets, lies and obsession from the two million copy bestselling author Mark Edwards.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2024I really enjoyed this book! It wasn’t too much on the paranormal side, but was believably done. Lots of twists I didn’t see coming. Set in 2 different timelines. Written very well, so that I enjoyed watching the book in my mind while reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2021“ In Her Shadow” , Mark Dawson is a mystery with a twist- a ghost who leaves clues to the questionable death of her aunt.
The author knows how to keep the reader turning pages. His stories have good plots and interesting characters caught up in a mystery.
Jessica is happily married to Will. They have an a son and a four year old daughter. The son is a bit player in this melodrama, but the little girl, Olivia, who is a bit spoiled and troublesome, plays a big role . Her parents are worried about her ; she has lately become argumentative with the teachers and testy with other children. Her teachers say she seems troubled by something, and is talks about her invisible friend, her aunt Izzy. Isabel- Izzy- Jessica’s sister, has been dead for five years; Olivia never knew her.
With this set up the reader is drawn into the investigation into a questionable death, worries about the mental health of a child , and troubled families. Both the marriages of Darpak and Isobel, and Will and Jessica are rocky. The author switches viewpoint to tell both stories. I thought that the novel rambled on at times as the author switched focus from what happened the day Isobel fell or was pushed from her balcony to the domestic problems in Jessica’s and Isobel’s households. Neither woman was particularly likable, and eventually we learn enough backstory to show why they were troubled.
An interesting book and fun to read but a bit slow at times. Oh, and if sexuality alarms you, there are some steamy scenes.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2018Five years ago Jessica’s sister, Isabel, tragically fell from her second storey balcony. Now, Jessica’s daughter, Olivia, who was born after her aunt died, is exhibiting some worrying behaviour. The 4 year old is obsessed with death, particularly Isabel’s. Not only that, she insists that ‘Aunt Izzy’ told her she was ‘pushed’ by a bad man. Jessica tells herself there must be a rational explanation, but her daughter knows things about Izzy she couldn’t possibly know, and Jessica has believed in the existence of ghosts, even since she and Isabel were young, and their childhood home was invade by an evil spirit.
First rate psychological suspense! The perfect Halloween read, equipped with a creepy, unsettling storyline, that appears to be paranormal, but you know by the end there’s going to be a rational explanation. This is my fifth book by this author, and the fourth one I have rated 5 stars. His books have so many layers, peel back one, and you’ve barely scratched the surface. I figured someone had to be manipulating Olivia, feeding her information, but I was completely stumped by who, why, and how they were doing it. Instead of making more sense as the book progressed, things got even more confusing and disconcerting, and it wasn’t until the last page that I had all the answers. Well, except for one part that was left open to your own interpretation, depending on how you choose to read into it.
I really liked Jessica, an average wife and mother, just trying to do the best for her family. She’s got a lot on her plate – grieving the loss of her sister, as well as trying to figure out who, or what, is trying to harm her daughter, and whether or not there’s more to Isabel’s death than meets the eye. The bulk of the story takes place in the present (2018) narrated by Jessica, with flashback chapters (2012-2013) in Isabel’s POV.
An entertaining, nail-biting novel. I will be waiting with baited breath to see what Mark Edwards comes up with next.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2024I’m not normally a fan of paranormal or ghost stories. However this was well written left lots of intrigue and questions and kept you guessing. Overall the book was good, I would recommend it to my daughter who loves this topic and to my friends who like these type of books.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2018This book was told from two points of view: Izzy's in 2012-2013 when she was alive and Jessica's in the present day (there were a few sequences told from another point of view, but no spoilers here). The stories were brilliantly interwoven into a brilliant psychological thriller by Mark Edwards that will have you wondering 'is this real or am I going crazy?'!
This book grabbed my attention in the beginning and held me hostage until the The last page was read. The plot and subplots were well thought out and well presented. The characters came alive and jumped off the pages. I love a book that I just cannot put down once I have started them and this was one of those. This was a real edge-of-your-seat page-turner and I was up all night reading it. Just when you think you had it figured out, something else would happen and you would have to start second-guessing yourself. You will change your mind several times about who the guilty culprit(s) might be. I was often breathless with anticipation and felt chills running up and down my spine. There were more twists and turns than a roller coaster ride and the big reveal(s) will blow your mind! The ending was perfect and it gave me goosebumps.
AfterThought: This was not my first book by Mr. Edwards — and it certainly will not be my last. If you want to read a great psychological thriller, get your copy today!

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't really know what to make of it.....
I have almost finished the book and I feel that after the suspense through most of the reading, the ending is going to fall flat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo, Mr Edwards, you've done it again!
I swear, I don’t think Mark Edwards could write a book that was boring or utterly unreadable, he surpasses all expectations and goes above and beyond with his writing. At first, I struggled to get into it, but it didn’t take long for the story to take ahold of me. It was dark, sinister and completely mind boggling. As always, this author has a knack for creeping the hell out of readers and well as keeping them on the edges of the sears. And I was no exception (I’m pretty sure I’ve bitten all my nails off!).
When we were introduced to a 4-year-old, Olivia, I was thinking ‘uh oh, creepy kids scare the life out of me’, and she did freak me out on a whole new level. The whole story frightened the heck out of me; I swear even my bones shook with terror!
The characters were flawless, well described and complex. I loved Jessica’s tenacity and fierceness whilst hunting for the truth of what really happens to her sister. I loved her amateur detective mode, that she pull off so damn well you’d think she was actually a professional.
I loved, also, that we get two sides to the story; Jessica and Isabel’s. It made it interesting and revealing. I didn’t want this story to end, like with previous books from this author, and now we have to wait til July for his next head blowing book to arrive!
Although The Retreat is still my absolute favourite, followed closely by The Magpies, this one definitely comes in at number 3 for me, and The Lucky Ones sits at number 4.
This author is absolutely incredible and creating creepy stories that have a hint of horror and a whole lot of brain-muddling scenes.
Bravo, Mr. Edwards, you’ve done it again!

Ok I have read 4 of his books so far but I liked this one the best because not only is the suspense build up good the end lives up to it. So good job Mr. Edwards!

This is a fun story, well written and easy to follow just like most of his books. This one drew me in more than usual, though. Two thumbs up!
