How far will the rich and powerful go in order to achieve their goals? That is the question Lyssa must decide when she finds herself caught between two formidable adversaries: powerful business tycoon and shipping magnate, Alex Andrakis and close childhood friend, ‘Dynamic’ Nell Winters, brewery heiress and prolific businesswoman. Following the failure of her marriage in Greece, Lyssa returns to her family home in London, to discover that her mother, a once-celebrated actress, is now facing crippling debts. When Lyssa begins to investigate these, she becomes embroiled in the intricate business dealings of Nell and her arch-rival Alex. Irresistibly drawn to widower Alex and his unhappy young son, Lyssa begins to uncover some unexpected and disturbing facts. The more involved she becomes, the more shocking are the discoveries she makes. The conflicts culminate in a frightening battle for survival as Lyssa finds herself the prime target between the possessive Nell and obsessive Alex. With her loyalties deeply divided, Lyssa needs to make the right choices for everyone concerned.

A former teacher, Lynette gave up her career in education a few years ago in order to focus on her writing and thus fulfil her childhood dream. She writes contemporary women's fiction, often involving romance with suspense or a supernatural twist. She claims 'Killing Jenna Crane', a romantic thriller and 'Unworkers' a modern ghost story/women's fiction are her personal favourites to date. A more recent release,'The Nightclub' is a romance packed with suspense, while her latest story 'Cocktails and Lies' marks a slight departure from contemporary romance into the realms of cozy mystery. After spending an agonizing three years unhappily married to her Greek husband Stavros Lyssa is more than ready to escape the island and return home. Having finally gained the courage to leave, she's determined to never trust anyone of Greek heritage ever again. But what happens when she returns home to find that her mother has sold the apartment to a Greek by the name of Alex? She's determined not to trust him of course, but what happens when he starts to show her overwhelming kindness and sincerity, despite her blatant rudeness? And what of David, the married man whom she met on her trip home, who simply insists that she come work for him as a personal secretary, with the promise of something more if she were to work a little overtime with him? All that can be said for sure is that there's more going on than meets the eye. Elegantly written, and filled with romantic entanglements and a fast moving pace this book is one exciting page-turner. I strongly recommend it for anyone looking for something more than just your stereotypical romantic fluff, this book has a definite intensity and richness you won't find elsewhere!

If you are reading my review right now you are about to read this book so I am not going to spoil your taste quoting the story here. Do not have second thoughts on downloading this. I have seen others have been more specific on the tale so I better talk on this book in general. I loved this tale and I recommend this as a wonderful leisure time read for every one. Author uses a simple language where it becomes highly understandable to every one. I loved the descriptions added which helped me in visualizing the plot. The characters are well developed and the minor characters play a wonderful role in supporting the main plot. Author's pure imagination is clearly transferred on to reader's mind by the language used here. Lyssa as the main character is left with options at her fingertips after her failed marriage and the story is woven around this. Romance and the touch of suspense makes this a fascinating read.

Right from the start this story promises to be enthralling as we meet Lyssa, a young English woman who is sailing away from Greece where she has been trapped in a loveless marriage for three years. Lyssa married Stavros after a very brief courtship and realised after she accompanied him home to Greece that she really did not know him. Amongst his family and friends he becomes a different person and Lyssa finds herself increasingly isolated, as she is separated from his family by barriers of culture and language. We are given insight into the loneliness suffered by any person who marries into another culture, but in this case the situation is worsened because Stavros, her Greek husband, shows little sympathy or understanding towards Lyssa. The author’s descriptions of Greece, particularly Athens, capture the heat and bustle of the modern city yet evoke the atmosphere of the past through allusions to its legendary and classical background. The richly textured prose is a delight to read.
As Lyssa sails away from Greece with its ancient past she is also leaving behind her personal past and facing an uncertain future. It is this journey into the unknown that the reader is invited to share. From the beginning our sympathies are with this young woman who could be any one of us, with her uncertainties and background of broken hopes. Cleverly the author reveals glimpses of Lyssa’s past life: her loss of a loved father, her reliance on a schoolfriend for the sympathy and understanding she lacks at home and a mother who is too involved in her own life to take much interest in her daughter. It is while Lyssa is moving away from Greece these flashbacks to the past occur, so there is a sense of past and present being concurrent. With this knowledge we are prepared for what will take place in Lyssa’s life. In a very real sense we are shown that it is impossible to break entirely from the past, that it will always have a bearing on the present and the future. Lyssa’s old life impinges on the new and she has difficulty ridding herself of prejudices that are the result of her unfortunate marriage. Also the ties of a friendship with its roots in the past have a strong hold on her and she finds it difficult to break free from this smothering affection. This is a fascinating study of a woman who in order to embrace her future has to leave much of her past behind her.

The latest novel by this increasingly popular author fully justifies the time it took to hit the bookshops. I have been looking forward to her next work for some time and this one certainly did not disappoint. It cracks along at a fast pace and the tension created in the triangle of the three main characters grips the reader from the beginning. Will Lyssa be able to choose between Nell and Alex, or will their choices over-ride hers? It is easy to identify with the main character (Lyssa) as she struggles to identify the motives which are driving the sometimes mystifying actions of the two rivals for her love. How can she tell who is really looking after her best interests, when both seem to care but also both act in ways which cause her pain or harm?
This is a departure from the straightforward romance novels which this author produced initially but shows a development in technical skill in the way suspense is built up and controlled to keep the reader intrigued. It's hard to say more without spoiling the story for other readers so my advice is to give this book a go - it'll certainly hook you from the beginning if you love romantic suspense!

I am not good at writing reviews but I have read several books by this author now and have not been disappointed with any of them and feel it only fair to share my views.
The events in all the books do not take obvious routes and are all completely unique. Taking place in different countries with different cultures is always interesting and it is sensitively addressed in the story.
When I started reading this particular book I found myself imagining where it was going to go but I could not have guessed where it actually went!
The story is completely original and is written with such beautiful descriptions that I soon became and stayed totally absorbed.
I felt very satisfied with how the less than obvious story unfolded and in the end concluded.
I also like the fact that I learn so much about life in general reading these novels.
Looking forward to choosing my next book by Lynette Sofras
