Book 1 of the 'In The End' Series!

When humanity faces an undead nightmare, one man’s party turns into a race to survive.

Logan has always taken things a little too seriously. So when his New Year's Eve attempt to unwind descends into chaos, he's the first to realize it's no joke. After Logan and his friends miss the evacuation transport, he's given a choice: lead the group to safety or watch all of his friends come back from the dead…

When Logan discovers the military and government have no interest in saving them, making it to sanctuary alive may be their only hope. And after he learns his party of survivors might hold the key to a cure, the fate of humanity rests on his shoulders. But saving his species could mean sacrificing himself…

Can Logan stave off the end of the world or will one wrong decision doom humankind?

In The End is a fast-paced post-apocalyptic zombie thriller. If you like nightmarish settings, reluctant heroes, and action-packed adventures, then you’ll love GJ Stevens’ spine-chilling novel.

GJ Stevens started writing fiction at the age of thirty. His fast-paced thrillers are the culmination of many years of finding time from nowhere to learn the craft.

His fiction is often referred to as a refreshing break from the norm, whether it’s his apocalyptic creations, epic action thrillers or his twist on everyday life with just one difference, there’s something for everyone who likes to be kept on the edge of their seat.

Whilst working to independently publish and make a success of his novels, Gareth lays bare his publishing journey through his blog (gjstevens.com), drawing together advice and knowledge from those already in the industry.

Pretty good book. Often hard to tell who was who, but it didn't really matter. It didn't give me a burning desire to read the next one, but I probably will.

I liked the characters and the still unknown source of the zombie outbreak. Sometimes the timeline seemed out of whack, but I really didn't "love" this enough to figure out if it was the story itself or my interpretation of it. I sometimes lost track of which character was which, so that could be strengthened going forward by giving the reader a little bit more to remember them by. I love all the indie authors and what they are able to do without big money behind them. Some of us are still sticklers for typos and I recommend on all these reviews to get strong proofreading betas in your corner.

What a super start to what looks to be a great series! I like the way things take off, drunken buddies, out in the back country, getting ready to bring in the New Year. Things do not go as planned.
The cast of characters mesh well together, and the new members fill in some gaps made when the original gang start dying. Fair warning, there is a cliff hanger at the end of this book.
I’m looking forward to reading more!

I liked Logan as the leader, he was kinda put In that situation by the rest of the group, but I thought Cassie was a teenager. “They were sisters, both too young to be anything else to each other, the woman having just left her teens, the kid only just turning double figures.” I don’t think her age was ever stated or the ages of our protagonist but I’m thinking 20’s because no wife or kids, his last “relationship”. It is interesting that Cassie becomes his love interest because I thought that Naomi or Zoe would fill that role, but we don’t find out till later that Zoe’s mind gets broken when something happens to Naomi, and their relationship which I don’t know if I noticed. I so hated Zoe for what she did, more than Lane who redeemed himself! Proved he honestly didn’t know, the media was keeping everything about the zombies quiet! So nobody really knew except Logan and the people who were stuck in quarantine zone trying to find the people behind the “virus” which is related Zombie Ants (I liked that idea). The ending was weird though.. so many secrets. I know that the reporter at the end segues into book 2 and having read some of it I didn’t like it because I wanted to know what happened to Jack, Logan, and Cassie and Shadow! Plus the I wasn’t warming to the new characters. So I wrote this in hindsight because I had to know what happened, so immediately skipped review and went to second book lol! So I’d definitely recommend this one to fellow zombie fans if they are looking for something with lots of action and surprises and a cool hero! I can’t give it more stars because there were too many questions left for me and I think it could be better. I didn’t love it but I liked it!

Let me say first, I really enjoyed this book! When I first began reading it, I was a little skeptical. I first perceived it to be a little choppy and lacking in detail. But then I found myself unable to pull away. I don’t know if Stevens did this intentionally or not, but this choppiness and use of less detail began to give me this disoriented feeling, like I was there with the character; running, scared, and confused with tunnel vision while struggling to stay alive. Almost like being in a POV movie. If you are a writer, it may be worth a second read just to study the writing style.

Overall, pretty entertaining. It was a mediocre at times, but also had some great chapters. The cast of characters kept the plot moving along, nothing amazing there--it was more of a story/action driven read than a character focused one. Some typical Zombie plot stuff, sketchy govt/medical folks being cuthroat to try and get a cure/resistance person. I enjoyed the book overall, not amazing, but better than alot of others I've read in this genre.
It reminded me often times of some zombie movies I've seen.

If you really like this genre I think you likely will enjoy it, but not rave about it. If this isn't your cup of tea, I don't think its strong enough of a character tale to have cross genre appeal.

Wonderful book full of fast paced zombie horror. Written well and full of suspense. I am not very good at writing reviews and do not normally write them, but I thought this book well worth my time and effort. It was difficult to put down even being a slow reader I had it done in two days. Just do not tell my boss. LOL I truly look forward to reading more of Mr. Stevens books.

My first time reading anything by GJ Stevens, and I must say that I really, really liked it! He put a new spin on an old story. Instead of our Hero being some super Warrior or Cop, Logan is just an everyday fella. He makes the same stupid mistakes that any one of us would probably do in his circumstances.

I love the character development he put into various characters...some important to the story and some, not so much. Mr. Stevens isn't afraid to kill off a character, so no one is safe in this story.

Now I have to wait until November, and it's going to be a long, long wait because I'm now vested in these people. Great book Mr. Stevens!

What a little gem this adventure is. If you are a lover of zompoc fiction, you’ll enjoy this book.
A new spin on the nature of infection and the carriers, too.
Great story and characters; also, being set in the UK makes it all feel very close to home.
    Loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Did you see anything strange?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 7, 2018
This was a fast paced read of relentless action and compounding chaotic packed apocalyptic hell.

We begin with Logan and his friends celebrating New Year’s Eve on holiday in Cornwall. An explosive event takes place in the south of England. No one is sure what happened since electrical power and telecommunications are disrupted and the holiday makers on the site are ordered to evacuate.
Logan and his friends, (what happened to Max and Tom, they were mentioned and then just disappeared), pack up and decide to return home – London. However, the roads are cluttered by abandoned vehicles and concrete blocks. The occupants of the cars have left their belongings strewn all over the place. Logan and his team try to find a way through the chaos, they come across a woman who appears near death. She is severely disfigured from her injures, but suddenly turns on her saviours and bites into Chloe’s arm – to the bone.
This is where we are catapulted into a revival of “Shaun of the Dead.’ Yep, we’ve got Zombies.
Logan has to get his team out of this hell and in their struggle, he loses some of his friends but collects Cassidy, a dog and others on the way. After all the mayhem and action-packed tension, we have the line “Did you see anything strange.” The situation gets worse when the military become involved and a helicopter starts to strafe Zombies and our heroes indiscriminately.
The authorities are determined to solve the problem through a policy of annihilation – this is where the comparison to ‘World War Z’ creeps in.
There is a lot of face biting and indiscriminate killing on all sides, although there are moments where compassion and common sense get confused. An example is when skinheads are on a looting spree, instead of killing them Logan locks them in a cupboard.
None of the characters to me had any real value of depth to make them interesting enough to like, I expect trying to survive was their only common bond. The big moral question behind the narrative, to me, was: who deserves to die or live?
I found this an exhausting read with very little let up on the whirlwind of action, and it ends as it started with no way out –leaving it unsolved and ready for the next book.
This form of genre is not for me, hence the four stars.
However, if you like the mayhem and chaos of a world heading towards self-destruction without moral values, where every human is intent on murder to survive then I expect you will enjoy GJ Stevens version of a Zombie dystopian adventure. In which case this is a recommended read for you. My advice is to keep the front door locked and the lights on while reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid zombie story
Reviewed in Canada on January 19, 2019
It took me a while to connect with the characters, especially the narrator, which is why I gave it four stars. If you love the zombie-horror genre, however, it has a solid story. I enjoyed how it unfolded.
