While I've given the book series a 5 rating, it's important to note that perfection is a rare find. The story of a damsel who has a billionaire fall in love with her is a trite theme. If that is in the description I don’t bother reading the rest of the blurb. That was in this story, but not in the description and the girl was not in distress. At first.
This series is an exceptional collection of books that manages to captivate readers with its unique storytelling. The narrative, at times, may stretch the bounds of believability, but the unexpected twists keep you hooked.
The constant change of point of view requires the reader to keep a scorecard of who the characters are and their relationships with each other. Jumping that hurdle, the reader finds it offers a deeper insight into each character. Well done.
The author's choice to use archaic English, such as “amongst” and “burnt,”
and occasional confusion with pronouns and mixing up when to use the
pronouns "her" and "she," or the order in which "I" and "me" appear in a
sentence — especially when a college-educated character speaks, takes some
of the style gloss off the book. I’m surprised the editor did not catch these
errors.
While the book is a compelling read, it's worth noting that the author could have delved deeper into the subject of aviation, given its significant role in the story. For instance, the mention of a government passenger manifest requirement in a private charter flight, which doesn't exist in reality, flight plan requirements, what types of aircraft can make intercontinental flights, and failure to understand what in-cabin emergency equipment a charter aircraft must carry. Then add her constant referral to a “private” airport when she means a “general aviation” airport, all can be a distraction for knowledgeable readers seeking a more realistic portrayal. The book could engage these readers even more by providing a more accurate depiction of aviation.
Also, the author included firearms in the story, yet obviously knows nothing about them. For example, the following quote is a major faux pas: "Isaac passed a small revolver to me. 'The safety's on, boss.'" Revolvers do not have a safety. Again, mistakes such as these detract from an otherwise good story.
So, why, with all this criticism, do I give it a 5-star rating? Because it is a really good read and well worth the time.
