THE DETECTIVE
In her mid-thirties, DS Sara Hirst has left a successful career in London's Metropolitan Police Force and taken a new post in Norfolk Police's Serious Crimes Unit. Unfortunately, her welcome on the team is far from warm, and Sara will have to work hard to prove herself when the discovery of a body on her first morning leads to all kinds of difficulties.
THE SETTING
A patchwork of tiny rural villages, with quaint coastal seaside resorts and peppered by farms, on a bewildering network of small back lanes. There are no motorways here, and sometimes it feels like your nearest neighbour lives in Holland.
Bounded on one side by the Norfolk Broads and the Wash on the other, its greatest feature is the boundless skies. The weather changes before your eyes. To many, it seems like a fairytale, a cherished memory of childhood holidays. In reality, these are small hard-working communities, where people tend to mind their own business, and it's easy to keep a dark secret.

About the author

Yorkshire born, Judi has lived, worked and made theatre in Norfolk for the last forty years. She completed her MA in Creative Writing (Crime Fiction) at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in 2019, and her debut novel was shortlisted for the Little, Brown UEA writers prize. That novel became Under Violent Skies, which was long-listed for the CWA John Creasey New Blood Dagger in 2021.
Judi was a working actor with a portfolio career spanning twenty years of theatre, film and television; directing; workshops; audio narration and medical roleplay. These days she writes full time from her study in a North Norfolk village. - Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2021In this second book of the series, DS Sara Hirst, now settled into her job in Norfolk, works on the case of a dead teenage drug dealer. As the tale of the investigation proceeds two other related storylines unfold. One involves Sophie, a new teacher who bought from the teenager, and the other Dani, a young girl recruited by the supplier of the drugs. This provides a broader picture of the drug scene and its effect on the lives involved as well as adding interest to the story. The author is mostly successful at coordinating these narratives as she changes viewpoints throughout the book, but not completely. There are a few glitches in the timeline, one at least pretty jarring, but they do not interfere with understanding or enjoying the narrative. Although the detectives successfully wrap up their murder case, the resolution, albeit realistic, is not as satisfying as one might like.
The author creates some well-developed and interesting characters for her subplots. For me this became a bit of a problem because I really wanted to know more about their futures. She lets some of the relationships fizzle out which gave the finish a flat feeling. And I was left wanting to know a lot more about young Dani, who shows a lot of potential, and what the future holds for her. Unfortunately, it does not seem likely that she will again cross paths with Sara. She almost deserves a series of her own.
This series, too, has a lot of potential. The crimes and their investigation are well-crafted, the characters and their relationships realistic and engaging and the writing more than competent. Yes, there were some glitches in the coordinating interwoven timelines. However, one can assume that with a bit more experience the author will overcome such challenges.

This is second book in this series and I am ready to start the next one
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2021I enjoyed this book, but not as much as the first one. For the longest time, I wondered what made it different. I finally decided that it had too many characters going in different directions. That's not to say it wasn't a good book. I read it through and enjoyed the story, but ...
Maybe it was just me. If you have the time, give it a try.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2021Sara Hirst is the detective at the heart of this series and a well developed, wonderful character. There are many suspects and a supporting cast that are cleverly written in a way that brings them to life. A number of social themes run through this story and they add to the overall picture. Recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2021I wasn’t sure that I was going to like this novel but it actually was honest about conflicts among teams of officers as well as the collateral damage connected to Police investigations.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2022The story was always a step ahead of me so I'll read on to the next follows and expect to be surprised.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2024The story was not bad, however, the writing seemed rushed and very juvenile.
A dead teenager. Drugs. Crime lords. Missing car. Over zealous drug squad.
The offender was outed half way through the book, so, no surprise, no twist. Just a real slog from there forward.
Horrible book, in comparison to book 1!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great second book in Detective Sara Hirst series.
Comfortable read without the need for gratuitous melodramatic descriptive fillers. Judi Daykin paints a narrative that illustrates the scene just enough to immerse the reader in the essentials of the storyline. Look forward to reading more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read
I read, loved and reviewed the first book in the series called ‘Under Violent Skies’ featuring Detective Sergeant Sara Hirst. I couldn’t wait to meet up with Sara Hirst again. Well ladies and gents the wait is over because the second book in the series is called ‘Into Deadly Storms’ was released on 18th March 2021. I thoroughly enjoyed every single second of ‘Into Deadly Storms’ but more about that in a bit.
It took me no time at all to get into ‘Into Deadly Storms’. In fact as soon as I read the synopsis, I knew that I was going to be in for a treat. I made the fatal mistake of starting to read this book shortly before I went to bed. Let’s just say that bedtime was delayed and I had a lack of sleep hangover the following day. I found that I just could not put this book down for any length of time. I had take so well to the character of Sara that she began to feel as though she had become a friend and of course I had to keep reading to see if she managed to solve the case. The pages seemed to be turning so quickly that the page numbers became a blur. All too quickly I reached the end of the story and I had to say farewell to Sara Hirst and her team.
‘Into Deadly Storms’ is superbly written. I thought the same of the first book in the series too. The author certainly knows how to grab your attention from the start and draw you into what proves to be a compelling story. I love the fact that the stories are set in Norfolk as I have relatives from there and I loved reading about places with which I am familiar. Judi tackles some topical and often very tough subjects but she treats them with compassion and sensitivity. Reading ‘Into Deadly Storms’ felt like being on an at times scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. I found ‘Into Deadly Storms’ to be an unputdownable and gripping read, which certainly kept me guessing and kept me on the edge of my seat.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Into Deadly Storms’ and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Judi’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

4.0 out of 5 stars good read
Plenty of plots to make it an interesting read. The end results were obvious from earlier stages. Fits nicely into the next episode
I would recommend

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read. Roll on the next one!
The second outing for DS Sara HIrst, in Judi Daykin's Norfolk police procedural series - and it's another tense read. From the opening body dump by a person unknown to a satisfying ending, the plot twists and turns, keeping protagonist Sara on her toes. The reader is let into some secrets through the viewpoints of Sophie, a teacher with a special interest in tracking down a particular schoolboy, and Danii, a young woman who needs quick wits and clear thinking if she's to survive the criminal world she's been forced into. As threads are unravelled and connections revealed, Sara needs to stay focused to solve the crimes - but it's not easy when news from her family takes a very worrying turn.
I read it in a couple of sittings - it's hard to put down - and I'm already looking forward to the next in the series.
