- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2018These boys have such an intense relationship and I'm hoping they can stick it out for the long term. The setting is gorgeous. I was right there with them. The book touches on issues of mental illness and suicide, so if that's a trigger for you, you might want to keep away. But otherwise a great read
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2018I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I am sorry to say that this story didn’t work for me, not saying it’s bad but it just not for me. The author’s writing style seemed like I was seeing the story from a distance and I couldn’t connect or didn’t really like the characters.
Francesco seems like he could be so sweet and caring from when he found Ralf and even says something has changed about himself but he quickly goes back to his regular life and “entertaining” many others without a thought, I just can’t see it. Ralf is quite broken and needs someone to fully support him to help build himself up, does that mean someone should change their life for him? No but it should be taken into account when interacting with him and promises that are made, especially after talking about his past. I felt like these guys were thrown together for the sake of the story and bot because they actually worked and there is no way I could forgive Francesco for how he acted towards Ralf and didn’t think that Ralf should jump right back into his arms.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2018Sigh... just loved this story!
Set in one of my favourite places in the world, we get to meet Francesco, a porter at a luxurious hotel in Venice who after a date comes across artist and poet, Ralf, saving him from doing the unthinkable - committing suicide.
Beautifully written romance against the backdrop of a wonderful location, this story had me captivated from the word go.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2018This is a difficult review for me to write. The premise of this interconnected world of men in uniform was eye-catching. The blurb evokes an in depth romance between a bellhop and a man he rescues from a suicide attempt. What you get is an instalove story where one protagonist is a man who freely gives of his affections, while the other is a tragic victim who’s quite the doormat.
In truth Ralf and Francesco never discussed the nature of their relationship so technically it wasn’t cheating, but for about 80% of the story he’s with him, her, that other him, and back to the first him again. Their relationship is ephemeral at best and maddening at worst. Ralf spends an inordinate amount of time feeling sorry for himself and trying to find ways to “entice” Francesco back to his side.
The ending is fairly dissatisfying as it is quite abrupt.
I received an ARC of this book. The decision to honestly review it is my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2018A nice addition to the multi-author Under the Uniform series but not my favorite. I found the connection between the two MCs to be a bit lacking. All in all a nice read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2018I was looking forward very much to this story by Lou Watton. It is part of a series called ‘ Under the Uniform’ by a group of 7 authors ( Aubergine publishing). Each book is an individual story intended to excite the reader.
So onto this story which is exceptional... I have read the other books from this author but was intrigued to see more from them.
It’s a light thrilling read despite some of the content included here... it feels that way due to the clever use of words by the author and the style of writing that is used and because it’s interspersed with some humour throughout brings us much needed levity.
Both the lead characters were quite complex especially Ralf, and although Francesco appeared at times quite shallow given his flirty nature, this was really just the top visible layer, but as the story unfolded we began to see the more complex heart of the man and his kind soul.
The writing is clear and concise, very poetic in nature and written in the individual style that I have come to know of Lou Watton’s work. She brings clarity and readability to her work and communicates with us in much detail, of the people, of the sights, of the sounds and of the smells of beautiful Venice... it is this style that ultimately delights the reader and keeps us engrossed and entertained from page one. It is not an erotic book but more of a sensual assault on the reader and it’s very very effective... less is sometimes more as it was here.
Over the course of the book i was a little concerned at parts- really really hoping for a HEA and the ending whilst may seem abrupt to some was in fact in keeping with the book, the characters and the storyline, for this reason alone it was a perfect end to a 5 Star enjoyable read.
Thank you for another enthralling book and everyone don’t be afraid to but it.. it has all the ingredients you want and need in your life!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2018Ralf is ready to end it all. Francesco is looking outside and spots a man about to do the unthinkable and rushes to save him. And their story begins. Francesco is a bellboy for a hotel and Ralf is a poet and artist. This is a story of not giving up when life is hard and sometimes love can sneak in when you least expect it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2018This is on the lower end of the 3 star spectrum. I found myself getting lost with these characters and how they're supposed to be in a relationship. Nothing is defined the entire novel and Francisco just seems like a sad sack. The instant love on his part also is just so odd. I feel so bad for him and think some counseling could help, but this is also a fictional character so I don't know if the author wants to explore that route with these guys haha.
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short story
Not sure I really get the point of this story. It makes both main characters seem really soft. Finished the book but would not recommend.

2.0 out of 5 stars Like a cup of tea with too much sugar.
The 2w main characters were just too sickly sweet and the story was slow, slow , slower, stop.
