But a mistreated heart is always the softest, and Izzy can’t keep people out for long. Before she realises it, Izzy is losing her way again, and she soon begins to understand that not all villains look like monsters.

Some offer themselves as lovers; others as friends.

The battles she thought she’d left behind have only just begun…

The only thing that can save her now is an unexpected hero, and he seems to take on many different forms throughout her life until, one day, he shows up at her front door, ready to save the day, her future, and most importantly:

    Izzy Moffit’s Road to Wonderland

Victoria writes beautifully, I’m not ashamed to say I cried, I laughed, I gasped, everything that Izzy (and Paris) felt, I felt it along with them. It’s actually incredibly hard to edit a book you enjoy so much, I constantly had to go over it as I realised I was ‘reading’ instead of ‘editing’ and I’m looking forward to reading it purely for pleasure.

We meet Izzy and Paris in the Prologue, aged 10, immediately you can feel their bond, but also Izzy’s struggle. Her life is clearly poles apart from her best friend’s but even aged 10 they are funny, you actually can visualise this conversation between two 10 yr olds….

    **“I’m her anchor.”
    “Her wanker?”
Unable to stop myself from looking up, still struggling against the pain that’s floating around in the back of my head and making my eyes fill with water, I turn to her and frown. “You just swore.”
“You did it first,” she replies, holding back a giggle.
    “No, no I didn’t. I said anchor… anchor!”
“Like one of those things on a boat?” Her little button nose turns up at the end, something she only ever does when she’s confused. **

As Izzy grows up and her life at home becomes unbearable, she's forced to run to the only other place she's ever called home. She runs to her best friend, Paris, and the Hemsworth family for help.

Aged 17 she picks herself up with their support and feels like her life can only be on the up, because it could hardly get worse, right? Hmmmm life has a way of letting you think that, then kicking you right were it hurts with a sucker punch!

As the people around her change, she changes and grows, and grows up, with a few visible battle scars, and a few not so visible and watching how she copes truly makes you think that what doesn’t kill you, does make you stronger.

Izzy’s struggles are heartfelt, she is a character you immediately bond with, she is very real with very real emotions and flaws and as her life rollercoaster’s you can’t help but cheer her on when she fights back, and scream nooooooooo when she is knocked down. Her relationship with Paris is so reminiscent of any teenage girl’s relationship with their best friend (well mine anyway) and that in itself is fairly poignant.

I’m not going to lie, the story, in parts, is a tough read, but then so is life, you will also laugh OUT LOUD and you will FIST PUMP in triumph at times, what you won’t do is put it down until then end, until you’ve finished it…and smiled.

    Some favourite quotes:

**“You're beautiful,” he whispers softly, reaching up to tuck my hair behind my ear so he can see me properly.
“Lay off the cheap beer, Matt. It's messing with your head.” I chuckle awkwardly. There's no real laughter behind it at all. It's just a noise for me to make that I'm hoping will drown out the thudding sound I'm certain my jaw must have made when it landed on the floor.**

**I look down briefly, unsure I can find the strength to continue with this conversation, my head nodding in slow acknowledgement of his question.
“The will is in place, but it's not enough for me. I can leave you all the material things I have in this world, but what I want more than anything is to leave you with my voice.”
A single tear drops down my cheek as I look back at him.**

**The next thing I know, I wake up in a cold, dark room, the faint glow of the moonlight drifting through the windows, casting eerie shadows around my barren apartment. My neck aches from the angle I’ve been laid on it as I try to turn and look at the flashing, red numbers on the clock that sits on my small fireplace. It’s almost one in the morning. I haven’t eaten. I haven’t moved. I haven’t even taken off my robe. I haven't celebrated. I haven't even seen a single second of the night.
Most importantly, I haven’t heard back from Paris, either.**

**My days in Cyprus seem to melt away in a haze of Parker-induced fun and conversation. After our introductions at the bar and several more drinks, Jack convinced me to dance with him poolside and ignore the gazes of those around us.
I can’t be sure what makes me agree to his every suggestion, but no matter what he tells me to do, he always seems to have a way of making it sound like a good idea. **

**Paris lifts her head as though what I've just said has had the exact same effect on her. Her eyes light up under the midday rays of light and her hair blows around her shoulders, framing her face. The smile playing on her lips is genuine and full of excitement. “Wonderland. I like it.” **

So go and grab this book from 17th Oct – put it on your TBR – you will NOT regret it. And put a note on your calendar for Paris’s story – coming early 2015!

What can I say about this book? It was deep, like not just parts of it, the whole bloody thing! Every chapter touched on a new emotional issue and how Izzy dealt with it, but it went into her mind in a detailed way and I appreciated that. It had some serious soul searching in it. A lot of heartache and a small dose of romance. Too small if you ask me. It seems to be a voyage and return plot book, and while I like those fine, I find that they are not exactly my cup of tea. I have no closure in these kinds of books as they are often left open-ended. And I hate that.

A great quality of this book is the psycological-ness of it. I get Izzy, I understood her feelings of heartache and abandonment. Her insecurity and her hopefulness, her feirce protectiveness of the ones she loves were described exquisitely. Her life was a rollercoaster of emotions that I will gladly ride again.

    Favorite Quotes:

We are soul sisters, connected by heart if not by blood. I love her more that anyone else in the world.

Best friends don’t just ride through the good times side by side. They fall when the other falls, too. If she is going to get herself arrested, well then I’ll be right beside her, laughing the whole way through while Lori sits on the sidelines, shaking her head at us, no doubt laughing even harder.

Time takes away all those memories you try to cling onto, because new ones push past, bigger and brighter than the last and worm their way into their place. Time makes you forget. Time makes you question. Time isn’t a healer. It’s a destroyer.

Rumour has is that we, as a collective, should never say never. They say (whoever they are), to place that kind of restriction upon our lives will only limit our experience and cloud our judgement in the future.

I almost never write reviews. It's not because I don't think the author deserves to know how I feel about their work...but because most books, while fantastically written, don't stay in my head - or heart - for that long after reading them.

    This book is an exception...

Isabella Moffit has had a rough life. She has seen things no child should have to see, and experienced things she shouldn't have had to experience. The one bright spot in her life - her best friend, Paris Hemsworth. In fact, the whole Hemsworth family becomes her lifeline...until it all changes. Everything and everyone she's ever known is suddenly gone, and Moffy must learn how to survive being alone. She turns to writing, and discovers a passion she didn't know she possessed, and quietly lives her life, her best friend Paris never far from her thoughts. Several years go by, and Paris returns - a different person and with a major problem. Moffy and Paris must once again pick up the pieces of their lives and forge a new path. But where will their journey take them this time? All the way to Wonderland.

I've been a fan of #Wonderland on Twitter for well over a year now, and have come to love and genuinely care for the characters featured in this book. To say I eagerly await the arrival of their stories is an understatement. I promise, like I've never promised before, that this is a book you MUST read, and you will love it. The writing is fantastic, the words almost seem to create a picture that practically floats above the pages. I loved this book, and as I told the author recently - it has left a Wonderland-shaped hole in my heart. I love ya, Moff...and am so proud of you!

Victoria L James is an amazing writer! The story of Izzy Moffit's Road to Wonderland is an emotional story that can really hit home. Izzy deals with physical and mental abuse from a young age. She also learns about friendship and love and to trust as she grows. Izzy and Paris share a bond a sisterhood and each struggled as they got older but the love they shared is unbreakable! I cried and laughed for or with them.

I loved this story it was amazing and so emotional! Thank you for sharing Izzy's story with us!

I'm not sure what to say about this book. There were parts I liked and enjoyed... but this book has soooooo many loose ends, it left me with a lot of questions, the h met her H at 92% of the book!! It ended like a cliffhanger. Mrs. James has a beautiful way with words. I really like that..... but this book was more about the friendship between Izzy and Paris than a love story...
This book is part of a 5book series, but it's supposed to be a standalone..... nope, it definitely isn't!!!

    [...]

It was time for me to delve into a new novel and it was this recommendation that sprang to mind when considering my next literary adventure. Since reading Izzy Moffit's Road to Wonderland, I have been unable to define it so simply to one specific genre; its many twists and turns kept it an original and refreshing read.

We meet Izzy Moffit as a vulnerable child of ten years old in a wonderfully written scene, reminiscent of child play and the pure innocence of our first friendships. Those precious moments that stay with us for the rest of our lives, form us into the people we become and mature our hearts for compassion and love for those who deserve it. For Izzy it is her childhood friend, Paris, and it is her words to Izzy that defines this novel for what it is: "You can be the lead for once. Consider this your story."

It is with this introduction that we begin our journey with Izzy, through all the ups and downs of her life, from her private and intimate experiences, such as domestic violence and grief for the loss of a loved one, to the situations most have or will experience, such as friendships, relationships, breakups and life ambitions. The beauty in this novel is within the different emotions that are weaved into it, and Victoria L. James proves to be a clever writer by being able to convincingly write dark, emotive scenes and contrasting them with humorous ones.

It could be argued that the realism in this novel, is not a realism we can all believe in; as I considered this, I realised it was not necessarily a negative. After all, this is Izzy's road to wonderland and it hit home that every one of us has a different road to follow, and therefore all of our life experiences and our reactions to them will always be completely different, personal and unique. In essence, we define our own realities, and stumble through existence with the hope that eventually, we will find our feet.

Izzy Moffit's Road to Wonderland is one woman's story with a complex array of emotions, but most importantly for me it is about hope, because when all else is taken away, that is what each and every one of us can hold on to. It is an encouraging thought, that whilst we are all constantly experiencing the ups and downs of life, with all of its elated emotions to the despair, we are all paving our own roads, pursuing our personal happiness and aiming for our very own wonderlands.
