There are so many words I can use to describe this book, but none of them will come close to actually explaining the emotional impact it had on me. This book was the epitome of YA emotions on CRACK. It was organic. It grew naturally and it moved me. Gosh, it made me follow with half a hitch in my breathing - I was breathing funny!! That buildup, that crescendo that you saw coming but couldn't avoid, and that inevitable ending - I am heartbroken right now. Absolutely broken. I think the best and worst part about this book is that I read it in ONE sitting in ONE day. I am such a slow reader, I don't do that on the regular, but I couldn't put the darn book down. I just couldn't. It was amazing, for the lack of a better word. And the title to this book is so fitting -- oh my gosh, so easily recommended. I cannot tell you that enough. All the good things. All of them.

YA can be a rough one for me to read because of the fine line between a bratty, spoiled whiner and honest, teenaged emotions. A line between immature and acting from the heart with good intentions, no matter how bad that decision may be. I love that I can read one of McLean's books and know that she has the angst down, she has the emotions well written, and she has the drama TRUE TO THEIR AGE. That's the one thing that sends me over the roof - overly dramatic, teenaged drama, or drama that makes you want to punch the characters. But not this one. Not these characters or this story. It's real drama for a 17 year old. It's real to them and therefore, it's real reactions. I freaking LOVED it.

So this is a duet and I may be wallowing by myself in the corner, hugging my knees to my chest. I absolutely loved this one, without a shadow of a doubt. One of the best YA books I've read all year, and easily on my Favorites List.

“Love is not a noun. Love is something you do. Something you prove. Something you work hard to create. Love is not something that simply exists because you say it. Love is not a noun. Love is a verb.”

This is my first book by this author and I was blown away!!! This book is a 2019 favorite for me. It’s deep, it’s raw, it’s beautifully painful.

Connor moves to a new town with his dad. Being a basketball player, and a good one at that, leaves him feeling pressure that’s difficult for any high school boy. Wanting desperately to fit in and make his dad happy by pursuing a career in professional ball... Connor starts to feel that everything rides on him... until he sees Ava.

Ava is beautiful! She’s the girl that was once envied by others. She had it all... until she didn’t. After a terrible and tragic accident, Ava is grappling with her new life one where she’s distant and unsocial.

When a school project forces them to work together sparks ignite for both Connor and Ava. Wanting to be her everything Connor goes to work hard to becomes noticed by scouts so that in the end he can care for Ava like she needs. Ava finds solace and love in Connor and experiences true happiness that she hasn’t felt in a long time.

But what happens when pressure becomes too high and continued stress becomes too much?!?! Heartache... a whole lot of it.

    A must read!! 6+ stars

    Favorite Quotes from this book:

“I’ll travel through time to get to you.” -Connor

“But you never have to hide who you are with me. Because I’m here. And I’ll wear your pain as if it were mine. I promise.” -Connor

If there's someone out there who can write a better angsty, heartfelt, heart-tugging high school love story than Jay McLean, I have yet to find that person. Heartache and Hope is such a perfect example of this- Ms. McLean beautifully captures the pain and despair, the highs and the lows, the ups and downs of meeting someone and falling in love, even when, especially when, things are stacked against you.

Connor and Ava's story truly was full of such heartache and hope, and I felt it all. I wanted to jump into my Kindle and hug them both, to hold them tight and tell them they'd be okay, that everything would be okay. But would it? Would they be able to handle all that life's throwing at them? Because I'm not sure I'd abe able to.
Even though Ava is one of the most dedicated, most determined young heroines I've had the pleasure of reading, she's still just a young woman and my God did my heart ever hurt for her. She's carrying a load that even the strongest of adults would buckle under, yet she does it with such dignity and grace, I'm just in awe of her.
And Connor, sweet, kind, darling Connor, he's truly what teen-age girls dreams are made of. He's carrying a heavy burden as well- between school and basketball, his feelings for Ava, trying to live up to all that's expected of him, while still dealing with a past that constantly haunts him.

These two completely stole my heart. I want to ease their burdens and take away some of the pain. I really need for these two to find their happy.

I loved the More than series by Jay McLean so I was looking forward to reading this one.
Unfortunately, it lacked the magic of prior books, it still has the heartbreaking rollercoaster but the book was way too long. Too much of the same thing over and over, to make a duet out of this story that could have fit in one book just feels like milking it.

“Heartache and Hope” destroyed me and I just want to read it all over again. The book doesn’t talk about falling in love for the first time while dealing with life’s adversities, it makes you *feel* it. The anguish, the happiness, the heartbreak. At times I had to stop reading because it was just too much, too many feelings. It is so beautifully written. There is no fabricated high school drama, no cliche antagonists. There is just life in all it’s glory and brokenness, and two young individuals learning how to deal with it.

Ugh, Jay has done it yet again, no shocker there. I don’t know how she continually writes such amazing characters that just get you so hooked and attached to, but she does and I am forever grateful for her talent! I won’t give any spoilers away but if you want to read a book that takes you on a roller coaster of highs and lows, laugh out loud like a crazy person, squeal with excitement and feel like your heart is being squeeze in your chest then this book is for you :) I cannot wait for more Conner and Ava and to see where they go! Buy this book and all of Jay’s books as you won’t have a single regret.

My first book by this author and am loving it. What an interesting storyline and I loved every chapter and the characters as well. It was well written and not too long winded. I would have loved to have a bit more description of the main characters but oh well....

Connor and Ava for 17 years old have been through so much before they found each other. It was fireworks but there are major obstacles they have to conquer in other to fully commit to each other. It’s a story about love and how fragile it could be. I can’t wait to read the next book. Will definitely read more books by this author
