Ghost of a Chance: A Comedic Urban Fantasy (The Many Travails of John Smith Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 699 ratings

"Broken-Neck spat forth a stream of Spanish which no doubt contained disparaging comments about my intelligence. Or my appearance. Or my fashion sense. The only Spanish words I knew were the expletives my friend Mike had taught me. Even so, I recognized insults when I heard them."

The White Ladies of San Diego are one of the city's supernatural powers, organized and led by Graciela. But now their leader is missing, and the Ladies have hired John Smith, mediator and sometimes-private-investigator, to find her. Which raises some questions: How do you track down a ghost? What if she doesn't want to be found? And if foul play was involved in her disappearance like the Ladies believe, how exactly? It's not like ghosts can be kidnapped... right?

John doesn't have any answers. As usual. He also doesn't have much time. The White Ladies aren't known for their patience, and if Graciela can't be found soon, he might just find himself permanently retired.

I'm a John Smith fan, and the newest chapter of his story not only did not disappoint but offered up a surprising twist to ghost stories—that ghost would need a PI/mediator. I mean, ghosts just generally sort of float around, or toss the knickknacks into the fireplace, right? They don't organize, they don't hold meetings, and they don't hire private investigators to find missing ghosts.

Or do they? They do! Chris Tullbane weaves a series of plot threads into a satisfying John Smith-style ghost story. I still miss Bill, but I love Juliette, and though John clearly loves another, I could see the two of them making an electrifying (and not always in a good way) match. Maybe something will develop between them in The Italian Screw Job? I'm counting the days!

Though this book is a bit darker and more violent than the previous two, If you love urban fantasy, and would rather laugh at and cheer for a group of great characters than cry at the news every day, read The Many Travails of John Smith. Now.

I've been reading superhero novels for the last few years. That is not at all what this book (or series) is about, but his Murder of Crows series is easily one of the best of its kind I've had the privilege to consume (and I do mean consume; I tore my way through them and then and the novelettes in a matter of days, and nights...I literally could not put them down). There's just something about his tone and style, and while this series is altogether different (in tone and style as well as content) it still has his glorious sense of humor and sarcasm, but this series has even more of it! And while I normally enjoy connecting with heroes that are above average, John Smith's complete "averageness" is exactly what makes him so likeable! I'm very much looking forward to the rest of this series!

The middle of this volume dragged a little, and the narrator went from loveably annoying to annoying and repetitive. Things quickly perked up again in the final third, and the end was a lot of fun.

I have held off on reviewing this series because it started off so funny, that I really was afraid it would fizzle out & become a waste of time, but here I have just finished the 3rd book in the series & not only has it stayed fresh, but it has kept me laughing the entire time, as well as slowly fleshing out a lot of the characters in a nice, easy pace, so that I don't feel like I am in an origin story.

I can't really go into detail with this review, because honestly, I feel like everything I say will give too much of this great series away. So if you have a sense of humor, if you like a great story & if you have read my other reviews on other book series' & found them to be the ultimate guide to what you should read, then throw your money at the screen & be happy like me!

I’m going to say that I think Chris Tobin is a dang good writer I’ll read his stuff anytime and having a be set in San Diego or I recognize things sometimes and sometimes I think it’s cool so there you go.

First of all, let me say that I've read all of Tullbane's books to date and I've loved them all. Don't miss out. Ghost of a Chance is the latest entry in the John Smith series and it's the best so far. If I had one complaint, it'd be that it needs a bit more Bill.

John continues to grow up in this book and learn about the world he's been shoved into, somewhat against his will. Chris uses the anachronistic somewhat alternate reality of 2014 San Diego to his advantage through out the series and that continues here. I love the references to the Padres and the Chargers. After 18 months of Covid, reading about 2014 is almost like reading about Narnia or some other fantasy land.

Thanks for pushing your work out so quickly Mr. Tullbane (almost called you Mr. T.... but then you'd be pitying fools). I can't wait for the next one.

This newest installment is more of John Smith finally starting to realise he may have to start doing more than just staying alive in this previously unknown (to him) paranormal world. His acquaintances are becoming more friends and partners and he is developing a reputation along the supernatural, not necessarily a good one. Less humor in this private eye adventure and it takes time to develop this storyline but once it gets moving, it really moves. The story will make the most sense if you have read the first 2 novels.

In this book we see that actions have consequences, overall it's just plan good. The main character is as smart as ever, which is to say he screws up a bunch but eventually figures things out. Eventually. The author does both a good job setting up that something is happening in the background that likely has to do with future events, and balancing Deus ex machinas that come with a character who is both weaker than those he fights and friends with demigods.
    With brief spoilers
Bill does help save the day, for good reason this time as Little Flower almost is injured, he does so by creating a stalemate that John has to break instead of solving all the problems, and John wins by using what he has learned from his mistakes to achieve victory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice improvement
Reviewed in India on September 7, 2024
This one was an improvement over the first two books, more cases, more characters, more traitors. The stories are slowly changing from a random one off goofy comedy adventure to a mostly comedy adventure WITH a more nuanced story, better character development and relationships, interesting plotlines being laid for future books. Now this has started to feel like a proper series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rollicking good ride with depth, twists, and hilarity

A rollicking good ride with depth, twists, and hilarity; starting with a missing ghost, ending up John Smith crazy...

These books keep getting better and better. With the third book from Chris Tullbane in his Many Travails of John Smith series, there's a definite sense that his MC is starting to get into his stride. Not that John ever let being out of his depth beat him over the head (well he would, but he'd still get up after blubbing about it...probably). Although the mystery in this one seems to have a big red arrow pointing to the villain—at least it did for me—this doesn't stop you from enjoying the ride, while John plays catch up. There's delightful cameos from characters past (if you loved them in the previous books, you'll love them dropping in) and hints at something overarching pulsing below the surface. More werewolves, more vampires, more demigods, and more ladies in white; what's a not so good mediator to do? While there's a tad more angst and darkness in parts of this read, there's still plenty of humour to keep your funny bone tickled, and urban fantasy action to magically turn the pages.

I knew from the first book that I would like this series. Now with the third book, those glimmers I saw in the first have come together. This is an enjoyable read with a great mix of humour and plot twists.
