- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2022This book has it all – an abandoned and possibly haunted house, a gaming system, a demonic presence, greed, and more! Three teenagers who have parents that designed a world-renowned game are friends who also have a passion for gaming. Billy Rain nabs a game console he finds in a box on the lawn of the local haunted and abandoned home. He shares it with his friends. After a few hours of playing, they discover the game is a map to a buried treasure. What they find will put their lives and the lives of their families in mortal and eternal danger.
The author, Andrew Chapman understands the magic of gaming and the evil one suspects lurk behind the games. He creatively addresses several different aspects of business life and combines them with the evilness that not only lurks within us but also around the corner. The weaving of seeing things out of the peripheral of Billy’s eye is not unique but is done very well in this story to invoke fear and trepidation on the part of the characters and listener. The dialogue and relationships between the characters were detailed and intense at times. The graphic details of each death were gruesome yet realistic. The background could have been handled a little better and clearer.
The narrator, Karl Jenkinson delivers a fine performance as he gives distinctive voices to each character. Jenkinson keeps the listener engaged and on the edge of their seat. He captures the core of each character and projects their emotions and nature clearly. For each character, he has given a unique voice which makes the story easy to follow. I have listened to several books narrated by Karl Jenkinson and I dare say this one felt more like he had slipped the book on and became each character. An excellent narrator!
Overall, this book will definitely appeal to gamers but also to everyone else with hopes and dreams, how far one will go to make their dream come true.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2024I enjoyed this one! This sort of gave me modern "IT" vibes. The story itself was a good one filled with 90s gaming references and a bit of an 80s-90s horror feel. Three free-range pre-teens are at the center of the story, facing very grown up horrors that threaten to steal their innocence, lives, and souls.
My only criticism is that the ending felt very abrupt. I felt that there could have been just a tad more. There was really no denouement; big things happened, and then suddenly it's the end. However I do see that this is a "book one" so I am interested to see if there is more to this Shelly Town Saga!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2022I ordered the paperback for myself because the cover was too cool not to. When it arrived, my 19 year old son snagged it and devoured it in two days. He says, “Mom, you’re gonna love this! It’s like an old school Stephen King horror with video games!” My Uncle overheard and grabbed it next before I had a chance. Every other chapter he’s making faces and telling me he’ll have crazy dreams from the vivid descriptions. By the time I finally got a hold of it I couldn’t wait to dig in.
Jack’s game pulled me in with great characters right from the start. The story follows three teenage best friends who are the children of local 90’s video game programming legends. The town has a great feel with the quintessential creepy abandoned house shrouded in mystery. Billy finds a gaming console at a yard sale, and after he plugs it in, things get bad. When he tries to unplug it, things get even worse. Fast pacing really builds the tension and terror, but Chapman sprinkles in great moments of humor and friendship that had me rooting for the kids and fearing for their safety in equal measure. No spoilers, but the ending packed an emotional blow that stayed with me long after I closed the book.
If you like good gory horror and video games, definitely pick up Jack’s Game.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2024Short and to the point on this review - what a great story! There’s some editing issues, and the beginning has some grammatical nuances, but Chapman does an amazing job with Jack’s Game. DEFINITELY felt the Stephen King’s “It” vibes. I hope there’s more Shelley Town to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars Retro fun with a twist.
Bought this as the cover appealed to me and I'm so glad I did. Crack along at a good pace and there are plenty of surprises on the way. This isn't my normal sort of book but I really enjoyed it. A debut novel (I think) so well worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm not usually a quick reader but I devoured this novel.
What a fantastic read!
The mark of a great horror is in its monster, and that makes Jack's Game great. The story moves along at a great pace with characters I instantly related to. Each page played out like a great Netflix series... or Prime series as it were.
By the time the monster showed up I was invested, and truly scared for the fate of everyone and it's path. And I'd be lying if I wasn't scared for myself as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorey in parts; chilling insome and light / fun in others.
An easy read with instantly identifiable characters and some really chilling moments. And plenty horrific ones too - it is a horror story after all. No spoilers, but I love the way the author brought the book to a conclusion.
Definitely a good read.
