- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2020Jack’s Giant Problem isn’t the giant... it’s Jack! What you thought you knew about Jack— well toss it aside! Time to see the REAL story! When faced with an ethical choice, Jack chooses what’s easiest for himself. It is easy-peasy so he keeps choosing poorly until the witch herself has enough of his selfish behaviors. It is then that Jack must see the affects of his greedy ways... and realizes he must face the consequences. I loved this book, the story, illustrations, and the teacher guide as well!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2020This is the retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk with a twist. In this story Jack is a greedy young boy. He refuses to trade the cow to a lonely old witch for some magic beans. However, when she drops a bean he picks it up and then sells the cow. When the beanstalk grows he tells his mom he will pick the beans and throw them down. Then he sees the castle and all of the gold. He hears the giant and the tune we are familiar with. However, the giant is saying it to his infant son Ben. He has the harp play to put his son to sleep. Greedy Jack steels the harp uses the things he has taken from the giant to steal from others. Jack has a lesson to learn and the witch and his mother are going to make sure he learns it. Jack must learn to think of others instead of his own wants. What a great way to teach this to children.
I absolutely love fractured fairy tales. We get the story from another point of view which makes for a very well rounded story.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2020This is a fun different spin of the old Fairytale “Jack and the Beanstalk” - that teaches children about compassion and empathy and how rewarding it can be, to think about others. In the back of the book, the author made these empathy exercises, that gives children the opportunity to really grasp this concept after just reading the story and jump into the “activities” with a grown-up. Wonderful, colorful illustrations throughout the story! My kids really loved it!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2020This book takes a unique perspective on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. It has rhyme, a life lesson for Jack, and some surprises along the way. It’s great for parents and teachers because it addresses virtues and emotions. There are also some activities at the end that can be used for discussion or incorporated into teacher lesson plans.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2020I love the twist on Jack’s story. It’s cute and well written and entertaining! I really like the “Behind the Scenes” at the end of the story, too. And it’s a good lesson for kids about honesty and greediness. Another great book in a great series!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2020I have read other titles in the Fairytale Fraud series and loved them all, so I rushed to read this one the second I saw it available! It is my FAVORITE by far. A great twist and a huge lesson for kids to learn (on greed and making amends), all in a fun way!
Can't wait to share it with my kids!
If you are looking for a great read for your kids, THIS is it!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2020As a teacher, I am always looking for books that are spin-offs of classics. We read the books and compare and contrast the stories. Jack's Giant Problem is such a fun story that I know my class is sure to love. It will leave them giggling and also teaches valuable lessons. Added bonus: The prompting questions are the end are golden. Highly Recommend
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2020I remember telling the original story of Jack and the Beanstalk to my young son and he asking me why Jack was stealing. We adults who grew up with these stories have got so used to hearing them that we don't realise little things like that.
So I was happy to find this version where Jack realises his thieving ways are not a good habit. I also liked the unusual portrayal of the giant as a single father. Quite an innovative overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good book in this interesting series!
This latest Fairytale Fraud picture book is a great redo of the old “Jack and the Beanstalk” Fairytale. With a lovely giant, raising his young son alone, and a not-so-lovely Jack (who gets greedy once he spots the perfect opportunity to steal whatever he wants) we see a completely different side to the story!
When Jack’s Mum gets a visit from an unhappy witch, and finds out what her son has been up to, she is understandably very cross with him, and explains how thoughtless he has been... Leading to a happy ending all round!
As with the other books in this interesting series, the rhyming text is accompanied by great pictures, and the story is followed by further discussion points and activity ideas. A good way to introduce discussions about empathy and thinking about others to your kids. Highly recommended.
