In his novel "Surviving Karma: Yesterday's Actions Are Today's Trauma!" Mark Nistor gives readers a story about one man's thirst for vengeance and the ethical consequences of his actions. Pin's journey takes an even darker turn when he aligns himself with criminal masterminds. By adding the sub-plot of the disappearance and murder of the police officers, the suspense and thrills add intrigue to the philosophical perspective of the story.

As a fan of mystery and suspense novels, I was drawn to this one because of the concept of someone going after police officers as payback for being wrongly imprisoned. It turned out to be so much more than a police procedural; it's an interesting combination of psychological thriller and literary fiction. The author's musings on life, karma, and how wounds from our past can drastically affect our future prepare the way for Pin's predicaments as he's anxiously waiting to get out of prison.

I was hooked by the seventh chapter at the crime scene when they find Bailey's body, but it was the eighth chapter that really drew me in with the description of the multi-vehicle accident scene:

Rows of rose bushes cannot mask the sickening stench of gas coming from a smoke gray truck that impaled itself to the back end of a blue hybrid sedan.

This intense psychological thriller deals with revenge, loyalty, and the consequences of past actions. It highlights the complexity of human relationships as it pertains to police officers, their informants, gangs, and life on skid row in general. The language contains street talk which gives it an air of authenticity while the narrative is gripping and filled with unpredictable twists, exploring the darker aspects of human nature. With relatable characters and a steady plot, it keeps readers fully invested.

Mark Nistor is an author who turned a life-changing promise into a passion for storytelling.

Inspired by his late mother’s encouragement, Mark’s debut novel, Challenging Karma, marked the beginning of the 'Where's Your Karma?' series.

The published author experience has always placed high on a list of dreams. With a background in logistics and video production, Mark brings a unique, streetwise perspective to his writing, crafting tales that resonate with emotion and intrigue.

When not writing, Mark enjoys family time and nurturing his entrepreneurial spirit.

Mark learned quick that script writing and editing for television differs from print. A natural at storytelling, putting words to paper was never a problem. His issue, motivation. May 1st, 2024, is the day he kept a last promise to his mother. Before she passed, she made Mark promise to publish the novel he started writing in the nineties.

Another motivation came from his ninety + grandfather. Even though his mother broke a cardinal rule, she allowed him to read the manuscript (around draft 20). His comment was both a compliment and an insult, linking to constructive criticism. He made Mark's mother laugh with, “I didn’t think Mark was that smart.”

Mark hopes 'Challenging Karma' and its recently released follow-up, 'Surviving Karma' live up to his ancestors' expectations. These books brought some wonderful professionals into Mark's life. They've been great at helping give his fictional character's life.

Beyond keeping a promise, Mark has no expectations for the fictional Karma series. His goals focus on readers enjoying it, maybe laugh, or curse from the unexpected, but he cherishes the thought of you allowing him to entertain you.

'Inheriting Karma' and it's parallel running story, 'Reciprocating Karma' are currently in editing with targeted release dates of May, 2025. A fifth yet to named manuscript is outlined with a first draft to start soon.

For now, he wonders if his heavenly guides enjoy his final projects.

    WOW, an intriguing read. So much going on and so many interesting characters. Cops are dying and not because of work. They seem to be random targets, but are they. The informants on the street try to help but it's hard to understand the cryptic mumbling that comes from them. Local gangs are known by hyphens and colors.The girl and the Cop that got Pin arrested will pay, with thier lives if he has any say. The story bounced around a lot at first then not. It was fairly easy to follow the trail and dialogs. Enjoyable to read a story with no mistakes. Looking forward to my next read from this author

    I liked that this came from Pin's viewpoint a lot. I love getting the story from a 'bad guy's' perspective. Overall, this was good. I did enjoy it. Sometimes it was hard to read. BUT that may be a me thing. I'd still recommend it though because it's an interesting story. Lots of stuff going on that keeps you on your toes.
