The Janitor Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

All these new superheroes are not all they're hyped up to be anymore...what if the one guy with no powers at all is the one they should worry about most?
Deceivingly short, in a few pages this noir superhero tale takes you down a darkly humorous alley and then pounces on you for a final twist that will leave you grinning...evilly.

This story, which got a Pushcart prize nomination in 2015, can also be found in the 9by2 short story collection by Ian and D.J. Lahey

Writing's easy, they said. Just put the words down, don't worry about form, it's just a draft, they said...well, writing IS easy. I mean this bio, for instance, was written in five minutes including the toilet break. Yes, writing's easy for me.

As long as there are no characters involved. Once you create characters they start making requests. They start waking you up at night with ideas. They start having dialogues with other characters while you're trying to have a shower.

You've never really felt the pain of writing until you've witnessed a shouting argument between six angry characters inside your own head. Editing also sucks because then your characters start arguing with you for cutting their scenes out.

So, yeah. I write. Buy my books.

I could imagine this as part of an anthology for middle school readers, and maybe that’s for a future date?

The janitor shows promise as a short story. You can’t help but wonder if he is as delusional as Arthur Fleck or if he is a super villain mocking the reader...or if maybe, just maybe he is telling the truth and he is humanities lost hope. A twist like that is one that deserves more attention and I hope the author considers expanding this interesting premise he created with this short story.

Short and Sweet (revenge). As a movie theater usher (and someone with a college degree and a few books published) I could totally relate to this. Customers think that Oh, she must not have a brain if she just cleans up after people. Ha ha! Not that I want to hurt anyone...this story made me smile. It's a fast read, but satisfying.

Not your usual superhero, a quick and thought-provoking story with a twist. A quick read, don't miss it.

Revenge is a dish best served with a huge side of intelligence, and the Janitor has a ‘super’ abundance of it! A great short story with some nasty characters, vividly described, and all richly deserving of their fate. Looking forward to reading more of Ian Lahey!

A great short story of revenge! Sometimes having super powers isn't all it's cracked up to be, especially in this new world the author has created. Creepy, and with a brilliant twist at the end!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Short Story with a big punch!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 3, 2019
Probably the shortest description I have ever come across, which is a shame really. It's not going to entice readers in, so the only way to do it is word by mouth, and this is it.

A great simple cover and you know precisly what you are getting, a neat little short story which is actually surprisingly good.

It's horror, paranormal, and a bit of fantasy. Nothing too scary, it clever. I liked it and the imagination of the author. The main character is the janitor, quite a clever man really, that's his skill, that's what makes him different, only others with more visual gifts don't see that. As a result its bye bye to them!

Not much more I can say about it because it is short and I don't want to give anything away.

I was behind the janitor all the way! Brilliant story.
    Anyone got any matches? 😀
A good read. I suggest you buy it.

Omg ,as a cleaner from a family of cleaners and caretakers that people refer to as "just cleaners",this story made my heart sing!
Just because someone does a job you consider below you doesn't mean they don't have a brain! !
