About the authors
Victoria Manthorpe grew up in London and Toronto. She specializes in nineteenth and twentieth century history, visual arts and literature. Her published books are: Lilias Rider Haggard Countrywoman (Poppyland 2015) The Japan Diaries of Richard Gordon Smith (Editor) (Viking/Rainbird 1986) and Children of the Empire: the Victorian Haggards (Gollancz 1996; Reprint Poppyland 2015). She researched and wrote the script for ‘King Romance’, a 1hr drama/doc. on the life of Sir Henry Rider Haggard for Anglia Television (1993) and has also written an on-line biography of H. Rider Haggard for The Literary Encyclopedia [sic]: http://www.litencyc.com/php/speople.php?rec=true&UID=1929
Victoria read history at the University of Toronto and completed an MA in Life Writing at the University of East Anglia (Distinction 2004), winning the UEA prize for best dissertation in the School of English and American Studies. She was a founding member and a chair of the Norfolk County Council Committee for the Development of Literature in Norfolk (1998-2001), made a contribution to the successful bid for Norwich to become a UNESCO City of Literature, and is joint chairman of the East Anglian Writers group which is connected to the Society of Authors. Victoria has worked in theatre and television and has been employed since 2004 as Secretary to the Trustees of the Norwich Society.
