I read Donovan's excellent crime novel, The DCI Jones Casebook: Ellis Flynn, and as soon as I saw his latest release, I raced to buy it. I was afraid this book was going to be about motor racing, but no, it’s about much more than that.

Frank Brazier is a young Formula I race car driver with a brilliant future. He comes from a loving family and has just begun a relationship with Jenny, whom he’s known since they were young children. It’s a character-driven plot, with a strong romantic element. On the verge of his success, there is a terrible shift in circumstances.

I was glued to the book for 2 days, trying to figure out what was happening. Just when I thought I knew what the answer, the author kept me guessing. The set up was done so well that there were several possibilities. I wasn’t sure where the story was going until very late in the book. It’s a brilliant psychological thriller, full of intense suspense. By the end I felt totally mentally and emotionally drained, but looking forward to a sequel.

It’s been awhile since a book has pulled me in like this, had me guessing, and not trusting any of the characters. I read it straight through in two sessions, since I finally did have to pause to eat and sleep.

    Highly recommended.

Though an intriguing premise and nicely written, I kept expecting more. There were a number of different angles that were possible, so it held my attention to see which direction the story ended up taking, but the ending was less than satisfying. Perhaps there is more of the story to come in a sequel, but I anticipated a more evocative and surprising revelation. Still, it was a quick read and worth taking home for an entertaining weekend diversion.

In THE TRANSITION OF JOHNNY SWIFT, Kerry J Donovan has written a taut, egrossing sci fi thriller that has real heart. He takes the time to let us get to know and care about the main characters – champion race driver Frank, his proud and loving father Pete, and his steadfast girlfriend Jenny – before increasingly strange, life-or-death events begin to overwhelm them.

The greatest strength of this gripping novel (the first in a series) is actually not its well-structured, well-thought-out sci fi plot, but rather the ability of the author to grab the reader's emotions and not let go. Allowing readers to see both Frank's and Pete's points of view had me (figuratively) chewing my nails in terrible doubt and indecision. Are the "shadow people" Frank alone begins to see real, or delusions caused by brain trauma? If they are real, and many lives are at stake as Frank fears, how can he convince anyone else of the truth of something only he experiences?

There are some real shocks, twists, and surprises in this ingenious, emotional novel. Mr. Donovan's ability to put the reader into the very center of the story's events is so deft that I had an almost visceral reaction to those events. Take a deep breath, because THE TRANSITION OF JOHNNY SWIFT is quite a roller coaster ride!

Three stars for effort. I did not enjoy reading this book. The storyline is thin without much action.

Kerry Donovan has written a brilliant novel in "The Transition of Johnny Swift". Having read his 'DCI' series, 'Transition'
was an unexpected trip into another realm, all while maintaining a foothold in what we call 'reality'.
His characters are extremely well rounded, with Kerry slowly building nuances into their personalities, giving the reader an opportunity to really know and care about them. That's something few writers are able to fully accomplish, yet Kerry Donovan has managed that task seamlessly.
'The Transition of Johnny Swift" is a terrific read, and I can't wait for the sequel.

This is why I love indie books! Strict Genre books are okay, but when different genres are skillfully blended they become a whole new animal. When done right, which Donovan does, the combination of Supernatural Thriller, Mystery, Action, and Science Fiction seems perfectly natural.

This book kept me coming back for more, I'd feel for Frank's setback only to find the stakes were raised, and the task that seemed impossibly hard just got harder.

The only problem I had with this book, is I've got a million things going on in my life right now, and it kept dragging me back to it. I had to find out what was going to happen next.

    Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Belt up for an exciting ride.

This book wasn't what I was expecting but it was interesting and entertaining. The idea behind this book is great and only a talented writer could have pulled it off. Donovan does a great job at keeping the reader guessing right to the end, so I will do my best not to give too much away - you'll have to read it to find out.
The book opens with Frank Brazier in his racing car in pole position at the start of a race. I have no interest in cars but through brilliant writing I felt as tense and impatient as Frank for the flag to go down and felt I raced round the laps with him. With great attention to detail, using all the senses in his vivid descriptions and understanding how to build suspense all the action of the race day was brought to life.
After all the excitement of race day, the remaining 2/3rds of the book takes place in a hospital. Having shown his ability to handle action scenes, Donovan kept my interest, even though, other than to attend a funeral, none of the characters left the hospital building. Indeed much of the remaining book takes place in one room (and inside Frank's head). Yet despite the apparent lack of physical activity, suspense builds and I raced through the last few pages, desperate to know which way things would go.
Imaginative and intriguing. I will be looking out for the sequel.

I don't normally go for science fiction type novels and didn't think this was that genre until well over half way through or I may not have read this book. However, I am extremely glad I did read this story and look forward to the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected and enjoyable new genre for Me.

I have read the authors previous two thrillers, featuring a lovable cop, and really enjoyed them. This book was a totally new genre for me, I haven't really read any paranormal novels before so didn't really know what to expect!
Yet again, the author had told a great story, with plenty of twists to keep the reader guessing as to what is really happening. The first few chapters introduced the characters and then BANG! The action started!
I savoured reading this book and enjoyed how the characters gelled so well together. There were times where I felt like yelling at the people featured in the book and other times when I wanted to jump between the pages and help the main character out of his predicament.
A well written book which has great potential for a fab follow on.

Read two previous books by Kerry J Donovan ( DCI Jones ) and they were a great read, but I really struggled with this one, the beginning was ok but after the train accident I really lost my way.
It got so bad that I started turning pages without reading them and was glad when the book finished, I'm still confused as to what it was about, suffice to say I won't be buying the next one.
Go back to your DCI casebook please Kerry.
