Just Listen (Mind Over Matter Book 1) Kindle Edition
I live. I love. I laugh.
And you’ll believe all my lies.
Because she does too.
The world is a stranger.
But everyone thinks they know me.
My body has all the answers.
But my mind can’t understand them.
I’m drowning everyday.
But I never go near water.
The air in my lungs is toxic.
But I’m breathing all the time.
You’ll think you understand.
But how can you?
Even with her, I'm alone.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2017I picked up this novel because of a review from an Awesome Aussie! Her words were the tip of the story. I understood Jack and his pain. Felt his daily struggle with himself and the truth. When we meet Devin she does more than fall for him, she saves him, hurts him and NEVER leaves him even when he pushes her away. They are the perfect non perfect couple. Read with an open mind. Keep your tissue handy. We all have our good and bad days, just like Jack.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2017This is a difficult read, but so incredibly accurate in its portrayal of depression and what goes through the mind of the depressed. This is my life and I'm trying very hard to not let it define me. Thank you for writing my story.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2020I wasn't blown away from the beginning. Maybe it's just me, or everything that is going on in the world right now but I couldn't get into the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2017I received an ARC of this book for review.
This story is so beautiful that it brought me to tears and I am not even exaggerating. I finsihed it in a single setting because I couldn't put it down at all. This story deals with depression and it was a very hard hitting topic for me and that's exactly why I picked it in the first place. I am still reeling in the after thoughts I had once I finished reading it. There are so many people we know and who are dear to us who suffer from depression and we try to 'understand' them and start seeing them in a different light and that's exactly where we go wrong and that's what this book beautifully highlights. We actually go into the head of the person with depression- Jack in this case and see things form his perspective.
The main focus of this story is depression, its effects and how it feels to be in love with a guy facing depression. It's gut wrenching. And writing such a story is very hard since it needs to be handled very delicately and at the same time must be made very effective and realistic. Full points to D. Breeze for that. She has done absolute justice in sketching Jack's state of mind and she even justifies his actions without making us pity him. It's a fine line to understand a person and start feeling sorry for him, but the way she has written it makes us feel the former and gives us a very good insight into how this illness can tear apart many lives if ignored or neglected.
The story though heavy with emotions was not too complicated and was quite simple. It is a love story of Jack, who is facing depression since many years now falling in love with Devin who is a nurse and who makes every attempt to cure him. Their love story was heartfelt and very painful especially after Devin learns the truth about his depression. My heart broke for her on many occasions. After a bad relationship it was hard for her to trust Jack but once she did, she fell head over heels in love with him and it became THAT hard for her to just leave him despite his repeated efforts to push her away. She stood by him always and kept fighting for their love and for him even when he kept telling himself that he was not worthy of her. I am not saying Devin is perfect, she came with her own flaws and was a little too pushy at times thanks to her insecurities but her love for him was undisputable and it shines throughtout the book. The story mainly revolved around these two though there were important secondary characters like Jack's therapist Fin and Devin's friends. The writing was excellent and it flowed well with the story. The words were heavy with unbridled feelings, making the story very intense and nerve-wracking.
I am really glad that there is a second installement to the series because the story is far from over and I can't wait to find out how it will continue. Post this D.Breeze became a one click author for me and definitely five stars for this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2017I've read D's work previously but I knew that this was going to be much different, and much more mentally emotional to deal with, as someone who suffers from ill mental health myself.
I was really interested to read a story from a male pov of suffering with depression, and whether the author could get the true emotions and difficulties through the pages. D managed to do just that though and produced an utterly beautiful but heartbreaking story.
What really brought the emotions out in this story was the fact that it was a dual pov, with the tribulations of depression from both Jack and Devin's perspective.
Every step of the way I was with Jack - agreeing with his thoughts and feelings, trying to give him hope, begging him to not give in... It's so hard when you feel hopeless, and I think D got this spot on.
The feelings from Devin's pov were palpable too - it is as much of a hard journey for the close ones of the sufferer, as it is for them. Am I doing the right thing? Am I saying the right thing? The worry, the frustration, trying hard to be the strong one.
There is so much more I could say about this book, as depression is something that features heavily in my life, but I think this is one of those that you need to read with tissues.
I've knocked half a star off because, I loved the diary entries from Jack at the beginning of chapters but the formatting of them made it difficult to read, and I think these are an important part of the story.

It’s not often that I find myself losing the ability to write a review, for me as a blogger/reader it’s something that normally comes naturally…But I am at a complete loss for words right now….
Just Breathe touches on an extremely hard topic that many of us including those that suffer from it never quite understand. A condition that plagues the mind, that creates self doubt, self worth, that leaves a sufferer tormented by their own thoughts. It’s hard to breathe, to fight. Relationships are buckled under the weight of it all. Living, such a simple task that we all should enjoy, but sufferers of this find comfort in maybe, just maybe in taking their life away.
It’s called depression, and Just Breathe is about a man who lives with it daily.
It takes us on Jack’s journey where everyday is a fight, where every thought is jumbled.
It takes us on Devin’s journey. A woman who falls for Jack, but knows he is hiding something.
Jack and Devin, so completely opposite, but yet drawn to one another.
But can they survive?
I don’t want to give anything else away….But I will say this…
D Breeze…What you have given us with Just Breathe is nothing short of heart-wrenching, confronting and soul crushing. It’s thought provoking and breathtakingly beautiful.
A condition that has touched me personally that you executed with perfection.
This novel with stay with me always.
Jack will always be in my heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautifully. That's my stroke of luck
My new year resolution was to start reading non-fiction again. I hadn't for nearly 10 years.
I searched around amazon and stumbled across this book - the subject seemed to cross fiction and non-fiction - well one step at a time- lol
But what a stroke of luck ..................
I'm a little familiar with depression because my friend's husband suffered from it. Again, maybe this attracted me to it as well. Anyway, what have I been doing for these last 10 years?
The author developed the 2 main characters, Jack and Devin, beautifully. That's my stroke of luck, reading novels again and developing a bond with the characters. By the first 2-3 chapters I was hooked. They were both in my life - oh how I've missed that feeling. Thus, approx 4-5 hours after this bond began I had followed their newly formed love affair and willed (yearned even) them onto their 'happily ever after'
Depression is the heart of the subject matter and the author not only expresses the symptoms of this awful affliction impressively but heart wrenchily illustrates how it comes between couples that have so much love for each other.
Thank you for a great read and restoring my love for novels.
