The Kingdom and the Crown: The Complete Series Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 384 ratings

Fishers of Men: best-selling author Gerald N. Lund transports us to the days of Christ's mortal ministry and invites us to experience the emotions and events of those extraordinary times.

Reports of Jesus of Nazareth have reached the ears of David ben Joseph, a merchant in Capernaum, who has waited and watched for the Messiah ever since a special, starlit night thirty years ago. He and his family decide to see for themselves whether or not the rumors are true and journey to hear Jesus.

Though David is quick to accept Jesus as the Messiah, the rest of his family is more cautious. His wife, Deborah, and his son, Simeon, leaders in the rebellious Zealot movement, look for a Messiah that will crush the Romans with power and the sword, not one preaching a message of love and forgiveness.

Meanwhile, reports of Jesus have reached into the very heart of Jerusalem, and both the powerful Sadducee Mordechai ben Uzziel and the Pharisee Azariah are growing uneasy with the news. Though they hold opposing political views, both agree that something must be done to stop this man from Nazareth before he gets out of hand. However, in Mordechai's own household the influence of the carpenter from Nazareth begins to create conflict.

Come Unto Me: Volume 2 of the series The Kingdom and the Crown, Simeon of Capernaum wrestles with how to undo the damage wrought by his reluctant conversion to a man called Jesus of Nazareth. How can he stay true to the teachings of Jesus, which require that he love his enemies, and yet deliver the friends who face death because of him?

A similar dilemma faces Miriam of Jerusalem. Her father, along with the other leaders of the powerful Sanhedrin, are determined to stamp out the growing popularity of this itinerant preacher from Nazareth. But Miriam too has found Jesus to be far more than a mere man, and this poses a terrible choice for her — will she follow family or faith?

Come Unto Me continues the story of the people whose lives are forever changed by the teachings of a simple carpenter from Nazareth. Award-winning author Gerald N. Lund masterfully blends the biblical account of the greatest story ever told with unforgettable fictional characters in this dramatic epic.

Behold the Man: Volume 3 details the last week of Jesus' life — his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, and the crowning achievement of the atonement that begins in the Garden of Gethsemane and culminates in the Garden Tomb.

Jesus of Nazareth has been preaching in Judea and has gathered many followers with his teachings and miracles. But he has also made enemies among the rulers in Jerusalem, who fear his power and his influence and who have conspired to put an end to him by whatever means possible.

Mordechai ben Uzziel's life couldn't be any worse. His daughter, Miriam, has vanished from Rome, spirited away by none other than his old nemesis &mdash Simeon ben David. Meanwhile, Mordechai's credibility with the Sanhedrin is jeopardized when the council learns that his own daughter has become a disciple of this so-called Messiah.

Simeon ben David's life couldn't be any better. After struggling to follow the Savior, Simeon has found peace and joy in following the Master. More than that, he has found love; he and Miriam will be betrothed before the feast of Hanukkah.

The family of David ben Joseph continues to follow Jesus, though the Savior's teachings now carry an undercurrent of sorrow and unsettling prophecy. And despite increasing danger, Jesus' ministry draws him inexorably toward Jerusalem. Along the way, Jesus performs miracles of astounding power.

As the end of Jesus' ministry — and his life — approaches, the lines are swiftly and solidly drawn between those who will stand for Jesus and those who will tear him down.

Wonderful and amazing book about the three year ministry of Jesus Christ. The addition of some fictional characters, conversations, and peripheral events in no way detracts from the accounts of the New Testament. Indeed, the additions give a depth of character and emotions that enhances the last three years of His life, His empathy for all people, His teachings, and His miracles. The descriptions of the Roman culture and their arrogant attitudes provide an even greater depth to the history and events of that time period. I highly recommend it to Christians of all varieties.

One of the best books I've read that gives you some insight into the lifestyle and customs of the people living in Israel during the time of the Savior. The back-story is well written and keeps you turning the pages. The author, Gerald Lund, uses the scriptures as best as possible to not put words into Christ's mouth, but what Christ actually said (as recorded in the Holy Bible). Lund gives context that helps the reader understand why Jesus may have said what he said, and why it was said in a certain way that makes the scriptures more real, more thoughtful, and much more understandable.
I have studied the Bible for many decades and am so impressed with this Trilogy that I cannot express how much I gained to strengthen my testimony that Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God, is the Christ and Savior of the World! If you are, or are not, familiar with the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible, these books will give you an appreciation and understanding of the Savior's mission, His teachings, and His challenges to show the strait and narrow path to Jews and Gentiles. I experienced the whole gamut of emotions as I read, sometimes shedding a tear or two at the airport, smiling with happiness on the porch, and pondering deeply while traveling on planes, trains and automobiles.
    This is a MUST Read!

This was absolutely fabulous! It was well written and historically accurate as far as my limited knowledge can tell. I found the chapter commentary very helpful. Though this is a book of fiction, most of the events depicted are accurate and real. Some may consider this book geared for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint, but really, it is a valuable and good read for any Christian who wants to follow the Savior and know more about His life. I had a hard time putting it down and I really appreciated having all three books of the series together so I could read one after the other.

I have just finished reading this trilogy for the fourth time. I borrowed the books the first time. Then I purchased the set for my father. Then I bought the set for myself and now I have purchased the trilogy on Kindle for convenience in reading it wherever I go. Lund is a gifted writer who has added so much additional background to the scriptures about the Savior's life. The underlying narrative of the story told from the viewpoint of a fictional family of zealots who become disciples is also thoroughly engaging. To hear the teachings of the Savior and then have those teachings discussed by disciples real and fictional add so much understanding. I have recommended these books to many and will continue to do so.

I am always amazed at how much I learn from this author. He always makes sure that he clearly defines what is truth and what is fiction in his historical fiction books. The amount of research and time that he spends to make sure the truth is shown in the true portions are amazing. Not only do I enjoy the story, but I learn a lot from the historical portion. His insight is inspiring and educational. He is without a doubt one of my favorite authors. I highly recommend this book.

This book was a great way to learn about the world of Jesus--what Jewish customs were like, why they resented the Romans, who the Zealots were and why. Granted, painting a clear picture of Jesus Himself is no easy task but having Him speak in "Bible" when all the other characters were well-formed was a bit off-putting. As was the author's tendency to lecture every now and then. On the whole, though, the story galloped along and I, with it. I especially enjoyed reading it in the Easter season.

I love learning from historical fiction! And this series by Gerald N. Lund is absolutely wonderful! Because he has inserted a fictional family, as well as their relatives and friends, into the amazingly accurate account of Christ's life, it is much easier to read and understand. It is always very apparent who the actual historical figures are. And he explains everything and lists his references in the Chapter Notes. Sometimes the Biblical accounts of Jesus Christ's life is difficult to understand, but Lund's account is totally easy to understand the historical events surrounding Christ's life. I love this series! I read the hardback set when it came out in 2000 and thoroughly loved it. Now, almost 20 years later, I am enjoying the Kindle series just as much! These books get my highest recommendation!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Historical/Religious Triulogy
Reviewed in Canada on December 12, 2013
I'm well into the first book of this trilogy and Mister Lund is creating a picture of what it might have been like to be under the heel of the Romans. The characters being developed seem to be believable and the intrigue, the politics, the power of the Pharisees, Sadducees and the Romans seem to be always in conflict with the common people. One might think is there not much if any difference in our world today.

Mister Lund is LDS as I am and thus far I have not found any religious bias creeping into the narrative. I look forward to completing reading this trilogy and will probably update this review as I go along.
