The Kingdom and the Crown, Volume 2: Come Unto Me Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 186 ratings

A dramatic account of Christ's ministry, as seen through the eyes of those who would follow him.

In Come Unto Me, volume 2 of the bestselling series The Kingdom and the Crown, Simeon of Capernaum wrestles with how to undo the damage wrought by his reluctant conversion to a man called Jesus of Nazareth. His determination to follow the teachings of the Master has cost the life of one friend and sent three others to a Roman prison to await execution. How can he stay true to the teachings of Jesus, which require that he love his enemies, and yet deliver the friends who face death because of him?

A similar dilemma faces Miriam of Jerusalem. Her father, along with the other leaders of the powerful Sanhedrin, are determined to stamp out the growing popularity of this itinerant preacher from Nazareth. But Miriam too has found Jesus to be far more than a mere man, and this poses a terrible choice for her — will she follow family or faith?

From the Galilee to Jerusalem to the great city of Rome, Come Unto Me continues the story of the people whose lives are forever changed by the teachings of a simple carpenter from Nazareth. Award-winning author Gerald N. Lund masterfully blends the biblical account of the greatest story ever told with unforgettable fictional characters in this dramatic epic.

This book is part of a trilogy, "The Kingdom and the Crown". If you like the New Testament, you will love this set. It views life in the Holy land through the eyes of some fictional families. Through these books, you get a real feel for life under Roman rule, what life was like for a fisherman or a shepherd, a slave or a rich merchant. You see the inner workings of the Jewish councils. You experience life in Rome. You witness the birth and death, and resurrection, of Jesus the Christ, and much that He did during that time.

This series puts the New Testament into perspective, lines the events up in proper order. You will laugh and you will cry, you will feel anger and you will feel sorrow. Watch as hate and prejudice destroys families of the rich and famous, but watch as pure love saves others. Witness the early struggles of Christianity in Judea ... and in Rome.

Watch Peter and James in their daily lives. Be there when Matthew is called to follow Jesus. Be in the group of people who observe as Jesus raises Lazarus. Feel His anger as He clears the merchants out of the Temple.

There are probably fanatical purists who will say that anything outside of scripture is wrong, but this book ... this series is so right. When you read this, you will want to read the Bible again. You will see it in a new light, through the eyes of people who lived in that time and place.

I bought the first book, Fishers of Men at a thrift shop, bought the next two books here. I read each book in about a day or so, about 1700 pages in 3 days. I couldn't stop reading, nor the occasional crying. It is the best I have ever read. Unlike Lord of the Rings, no part is dull nor dreary. Unparrelaed writing, imagery and power. Thank you, Mr Lund.

I just finished this wonderful trilogy about a family living in the time of Christ and their interaction with Jesus of Nazareth. It's a educational, historical, well-documented gripping masterpiece. The story is well-woven, with end notes after each chapter giving historical insight, references and letting the reader know what is historical and what is a literary device. It's true to the New Testament account of Christ's teachings, while adding in a fictional family with their friends who have a variety of reactions to this new preacher Who is he? Is He the Messiah? Belief has consequences. It answered many questions I had, like how could the crowds adore him one day and then call for his crucifixion the next day. How and why did some of the leaders of the Jews bring this execution to pass - against their own laws?? I love historical novels that bring history to life and teach the reader. This author exceeds expectations. I feel closer to our Savior Jesus Christ after reading this again.

THis is the most wonderful series I've read in a long time. It helps to fully understand the happenings of the life of Jesus Christ. Gerald Lund writes fictional characters along with real life characters. He helps you understand the Twelve Apostles, the Zealots, Sadducees and the Pharisees. You learn about the life of Jesus Christ; his miracles; his death, and the atonement. You learn about Herod's Temple and what went on there. This series is well worth reading.
