Lund's nine-volume series the Work and the Glory, which chronicled the beginnings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 19th-century America, has sold three million copies, mostly in the Mormon market. With this new series (projected to include four or five volumes), Lund expands his religious focusDand likely his audienceDby turning his imagination to the beginnings of Christianity. The novel opens with the commencement of Christ's ministry in A.D. 30, and follows the story through many of Christ's early miracles and Messianic proclamations. Lund writes in pulp fiction style, weaving page-turning plots around fictional characters who come into contact with Jesus and his disciples. But he vividly describes the geographical and cultural backdrop of Christ's time in Israel, and uses these facts and texture to bring many of Christ's teachings and parables into sharper relief, giving them context and deeper meaning. An avid biblical scholar will learn little from his commentary, but more casual readers may enjoy the insights he offers clothed in an easy-to-read tale. Readers who have wondered what it might have been like to be in Jesus' presence, and how ordinary people would have responded to him, will overlook the novel's literary flaws and appreciate its sympathetic insight into both those who embraced and those who rejected Jesus and his teachings. I have resisted the 'Work and the Glory' for some time now, but I think Gerald Lund has convinced me to read those too, thanks to 'Fishers of Men.' In addition to a good story line, there is an abundance of useful information on the way things were at the time of Christ. Valuable explanations to the teachings of the Savior are inserted so well into the dialog that it flows very naturally. I look forward to volume two.

My understanding has grown - of questions like: How could the crowds love him one day and call for his crucifixion the next? Why were some leaders of the Jews so virulent against this Man who taught his followers to turn the other cheek? The story is gripping, well woven and inspiring. I'm reading it now for the second time and loving it!

    I really enjoyed Fishers of Men. Gerald N. Lund has a great balance of keeping you engaged and excited while also teaching you the history of the setting in all of is books. Fishers of Men is no different. I am definitely going to continue and read the whole series. I love the personal conflict each character goes through when the stranger who is called Jesus comes. Each of them have something that they must give up in order to follow Christ. By the first chapter you will be hooked by the suspense, but the full adventure doesn’t come full underway until you’re close toward the end and that can take some time getting too. The book itself is over 600 pages so it’s not a fast read. If you want a book that has adventure and excitement with a touch of romance while also enhancing your understanding of Christ in a personal way, this is the book for you! I would recommend it to anyone.

    The writter wants to explain so much in the prologe that it was a bit like a text book and not easy reading. It is necessary but I would suggest reading it after the book because the book is incredible and grabs you from the start and I could hardly stop reading. I wasn't expecting a novel that was suspenseful and by weaving in the stories of the people in the book I learned about customs, geography, how people lived back then within a book about Jesus.

    This is a great read; the characters that are drawn are interesting and rich in their depth and realism. Gerald N. Lund is a very good writer and pulls you into the sub-plots that are weaved throughout the novel. I found this was an educational read and highly enjoyable - he pitches the period really well and I found myself seeing this period through new eyes. My only small gripe's are the book cover, which I felt could have been more appealing; and also I would have preferred Jesus miracles that were described to be slowed down, so you had time to think about them as they were being performed and the impact they would have caused. I am looking forward to part 2 and following the characters on their journey's from book 1.
