King George's Man: A Georgian Romance Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 430 ratings

Nell discovers a dangerous plot. Will she lose her life as well as her heart?
Nell works hard as an unpaid cook in her uncle’s inn on the lonely, windswept moors. She dreams of something more; a good marriage might be too much to hope for, but perhaps she could find employment in a place less miserable than this one.
When Nell overhears a secret tryst between her cousin and the highwayman known as Gentleman Jones, she finds there is more than romance on their minds. Something that could also get
her into trouble with the law. She decides to investigate.
Before long, she finds herself in a dangerous predicament.
Lieutenant Toby Bourne is on leave in England before a posting to the Colonies. The local magistrate recruits Toby to help him investigate a brutal highway robbery that resulted in the murder of three men. He starts his investigation at the lonely inn on the moors.
When he discovers Nell where she shouldn’t be, she has to work hard to convince him she is not in league with the criminals. Once he accepts her story, they begin to devise a trap to catch the highwayman. But it won’t be easy. His many accomplices are at the ready to stop both Toby and Nell, by any means possible.
As they work together, Nell is attracted to the handsome lieutenant, but knows marriage is unlikely for someone in her lowly position. Meanwhile, Toby begins to admire the clever and honest Nell. He has always thought that a soldier should not marry—will his feelings for Nell change his mind?
King George’s Man is a tale of adventure with romance at its heart. It was inspired by 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes, but the story is not the same as the one in the poem.

I was born in England, near the Welsh border, and lived in several places while I was growing up, including a spell in Singapore and in Malta. Malta was where I got hooked on historical romances - my parents rented a furnished house, and the owners had left most of their books there, including a whole set of Georgette Heyer novels.

Loving Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer, I longed to write similar novels myself. I toyed with the idea several times over the years, but real life intervened and I've had several careers, including as a non-fiction author under another name. That wasn’t quite the writing career I had in mind…

So here I am, finally publishing my stories. I hope you enjoy them.

This is the story of Nell Mason, whose life difficulties have placed her with an unkind and selfish uncle, working as a cook in his remote inn on the moors. Smuggling and highway robbery provide the rising action in the story, with Lieutenant Toby Bourne detailed to pursue and capture the infamous highwayman, Gentleman Jones. A fun read with a nice period feel but the characters felt like milky tea.

I'm a writer and I would have loved a wee bit of description about Nell's face -- maybe the ubiquitous cap falls off at some point and we get to see her hair. But no. I also strongly believe a good villain makes for a great story. I wish Davis had developed the swashbuckling Jones a great deal more ("a coat of claret velvet, a bunch of lace at his chin," as Noyes' poem so dramatically describes him). In this story, Jones was a shadowy figure drifting in and out under the cover of darkness. I can't help but feel there was a lost opportunity for drama here.

A wonderful historical romance with elements of danger and mystery. The protagonists are good and honorable but common folk and the villains are truly evil. Characters with titles appear only on the periphery, and the “ton” appears not at all. Most refreshing! This is a clean, historically compelling, and well-researched story set in a real location known to the author. The heroine is an orphaned, gently born woman trying to survive in an unpleasant situation. The hero is an honorable lieutenant (King George’s man) with a strong sense of integrity, home on leave and enlisted by the local magistrate to help capture a vicious highwayman. However, unlike the Alfred Noyes poem that serves as inspiration for the story, this highwayman was (thankfully) not romanticized nor was his “love interest,” the innkeeper’s daughter. (The world already has too many stories about villains celebrated as “heroes.”) The H&h worked together to capture the villain and their mutual admiration turned to love. A minimum of emotional angst is resolved by a good dose of open communication. All in all, this was a delightful read that I can unreservedly recommend. A possible minor spoiler: as someone who lives in the former “colonies,” I especially appreciated that the hero retires from the military and returns home before the American Revolutionary War. I was gifted an early copy of the book by the author (thank you, Jayne) but this did not influence my opinion or review.

Jayne Davis knows how to set the pace to keep her readers following this tale of sorrow, past joys and joys that were to come. I was distressed with the romantic distraction early on for Toby, meanwhile learning about Nell, her life’s circumstances, yet knowing they would somehow connect. The variety of villains played beautifully into the story, with some speculation if Jones was actually one of the military men. I loved how the “silly miss” of the story did not win. Well played, Jayne Davis!

I like reading Jayne Davis, because her books are fun and well written, and I know they will be clean. King George's Man is a little bit outside of her normal story. That's not a bad thing or a good thing; just an observation. It was interesting and kept the pages turning. I liked Nell and cheered her on.

As an author and teller of good stories, Jayne Davis is equal to the best; Balogh, Laurens. She writes well, constructs a good story, creates believable characters, and avoids extraneous situations and language. Her description of the Yorkshire moors, an area I know well, is masterful.
A good book which is difficult to put down is worth finding! Thank you.
I was delighted with the additional note at the end about the couple's return to Britain; however, I really want to know if they had children! A sequel please!

This is my favorite of Jayne’s books, so far. As always, her characters are well developed, realistic, and sympathetic. Her accurate rendering of history adds interest and texture to the narrative. This book is faster paced with a more active plot than some of her books. Also, it is set in the period prior to the very well trodden Regency, which adds another layer of interest. I hope I’m not making the book sound pedantic. It is fast and fun.

As always another great story with solid characters and this time a couple of bad guys. I so enjoyed Nell and Toby’s relationship. I am wondering if this is a stand alone story or the beginnings of a series.

The heroine of this story, left destitute by the death of her father, is to forced to work in a run-down inn for her uncle.
As the reader can imagine the work-load was considerable , involving lots of chopping , mopping and swabbing. The period detail was well realised, but it does not allow the luxury of escapism.
The book is set in the mid eighteenth century but her dresses relied more on " make do and mend " than visits to the drapers and silk merchants.
The book had a feel of Jamaica Inn about it. there is romance, brutal robbery and mild peril, but I found it slightly underwhelming.
