Keeper of the Flame: Orrick: Second in Command Series, Book 5
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
Immortality isn’t always a blessing...sometimes, it’s a curse!
An old sorcerer is how everyone knows him, but Orrick Pendragon has only chosen to shape-shift into the image an old man because of his painful past. When he stole the Eternal Flame more than 100 years ago, he had no idea of the consequences of his action. Being immortal and also married, he had to watch as his loving wife grew old and died while he stayed young and continued to live forever. Heartbroken, he swore he would never fall in love again. But when Lady Hope appears at his tower door seeking his assistance to find the Eternal Flame, he's intrigued and strangely attracted to her. Against his better judgment, he finds himself shape-shifting back into his young and handsome form of Sir Rick.
Lady Hope Threston arrives at Blake Castle as Lord Corbett's ward. However, it is only a ploy on her part to get what she wants. She's been betrothed to Lord Irwin, a blackhearted, greedy man. In order to convince him to break the betrothal, she agrees to help him find the Eternal Flame. However, she needs the assistance of the old sorcerer to do it. Lord Irwin wants to be powerful, invincible, and immortal, but all she wants is to be free. Then she meets the handsome Sir Rick, and magically, everything changes.
Can an immortal man who is destined to live forever find love again with a mortal woman who is bound to die?

- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2019"Immortality should have been a blessing, but for Orrick Pendragon, it was naught but a curse." Image living forever and seeing everyone you care about die as you live on just as your were.
That is what Orrick faced as he lost his beloved over 100 years ago. He was the Keeper of the Flame, for the last 100 years.
When Lady Hope Threston entered his room, wanting to find the Eternal Flame, he could only tell her he could not help, although of course he knew. He had shapeshifted into an old man, a sorcerer but Hope intrigues him and he finds himself attracted to her.
What would happen if the eternal flame got into the wrong hands? It makes the holder immortal but they could cause so much harm and that is why Orrick guards it fiercely.
A magical tale that had me turning the pages from the first to see what would happen! Elizabeth Rose at her best!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2019Magic, magic everywhere!! Loved that the author brought in Merlin..aka Orrick!!!! Have always enjoyed Elizabeth Rose books. Just enough mystery
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2022I’ve read many books by this author and have loved most all of them( if not all of them) and that is why it’s hard for me to only give this one three stars but I feel that’s fair. The story itself was ok but the characters.....didn’t care for any of them and that is where the problem lied for me...I think. It’s hard to get into a story if you don’t like or care about the characters. The ending was the best part and again...not my favorite. Overall it’s a good story and pry worth a read...who knows, you may like the characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2023Hope and orricks story was very funny and amusing. Orrick changing from himself to a younger sir Rick to get Hope. Hope was supposed to be bethored to sir Irwin who she hated. They were after the keeper of the flame who orrick was..in the end orrick gets to marry hope
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2021A magical story filled with suspense, a bit of mystery, intriguing characters and a good plot.
I have not read the other books in this series and I was not lost as far as the story goes.
Elizabeth writes with such a flair that just grabs you right away and keeps your attention to the end.
It was a fun story to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2023It seems like most of the characters in this book are brats. Not doing anything they are told. They do things they know they shouldn’t. They aggravate me even tho they are characters in a book. This was a good story but not my favorite book I the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2019In this book five of the Second in Command series, the old Sorcerer, Orrick gets his story and maybe his happily ever after. In other books, the immortal Orrick seems happy enough helping other people, but it turns out that he isn’t really happy. When Lady Hope Threston comes to Blake Castle as Ward to Lord Corbett Blake, we meet another unhappy soul. She is betrothed to a man she has no desire to marry, and he’ll only let her out of their arrangement if she can lead him to the magic, mystical Eternal Flame. But we see that Lady Hope is no lady – in fact, I found her to be deceitful, nosey, and annoying – certainly no lady of medieval times. I thought Orrick should have put Hope in her place more than once. I honestly couldn’t understand what Orrick saw in her, except for the obvious – her looks. Hope awakened a longing in Orrick that hadn’t been there in over 100 years, and so their journey began. And their journey was filled with many mishaps along the way. I enjoyed the interesting story about the Eternal Flame, even though we learn of how Orrick’s not so honest involvement with it began. I love medieval stories, and this is a good one despite not being fond of Lady Hope. If you are a fan of medieval romance, then this story is worth reading, as are Ms. Rose’s other medieval romances. I was given an ARC of this book and have left my honest opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Elizabeth captured my attention from page 1.
In these troubled times it was great to have a book that you just couldn't lay down. I was completely captivated.
I loved the idea of an author laying in a hammock in a secret garden writing.
Well done. Kay
