Kibble Talk Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 265 ratings

Once Tawny decides to do something, there’s no holding her back. So when her best friend Jenny dares her to eat dog kibble, down it goes. Little does she know how that dusty, tasteless lump will change her life. Suddenly she can hear what dogs have to say and talk back to them too! This might not be such a big deal, except that her own pet, an enormous Great Dane named Dinky, has a LOT to say. He lets her know right away that his fondest wish is to be a teeny tiny lap dog with all the sparkly accessories. Tawny promises to help him, and her life nearly goes to the dogs. A funny book for boys and girls or adults who love dog stories, you will never look at your dog the same way again! Book 1 in the Kibble Talk Series.

This is the story of fourth grade Tawny and her dog, Dinky. The story begins when Tawny's best friend Jenny dares her to eat a piece of dog food. Suddenly, Tawny becomes a junior Dr. Doolittle, able to communicate with dogs through mind reading. It turns out that she can keep this ability if she pops the occasional piece of kibble. Tawny learns a lot about her canine companions including that her own lovable, enormous, and occasionally drooling dog Dinky wants nothing more in life than to be a lap dog. Tawny sets out to fulfill her dog's deepest desire, and enters him in a dog show contest. The result is spectacular, hilarious, and shows the reader how being yourself is the greatest thing you can do for yourself.

I truly loved this book. The writing is impeccable and the story itself is, well, hilarious. Tawny is a spunky, good-hearted kid who does her best to make things right--even when whatever can go wrong, does go wrong. Dinky is a lovable dog who doesn't let something as trivial as size or body shape get in the way of his heart's desire to be a lap dog. With words and phrases like "dogzilla" and "dogologist" or "Darn Well Please" mornings which is Tawny's family code name for days when the family is allowed to sleep in, I found myself chuckling throughout the story. The author's descriptions of the characters and day to day activities in Tawny's life are so well done, I felt myself slipping back to when I was a fourth grader!

Overall, this is an excellent book, terrific for dog lovers and non-dog lovers alike. I highly recommend this fun, funny, and ultimately heart-warming book.

Two caveats before I review this book: (1) Cynthia Port is my niece, and (2) I’m a published author with three books and decades of newspaper and magazine writing on my resume. I usually review only books I can recommend, and I hope the family relationship hasn’t compromised my professional objectivity.

Nine-year old Tawny is the narrator and protagonist of this delightful children’s book, but the real show stealer is her pet, Dinky, a truly “great” Great Dane. The huge animal has a lap dog dream and a ton of wisdom about life, people, and other animals. Tawny becomes able to access this information and hold conversations with Dinky when, on a dare, she eats a piece of dog food. As long as she takes an occasional nibble on a kibble she is a pint-sized Dr. Doolittle, who can talk with canines.

Kibble Talk reminds me of the Winnie-the-Pooh books, my favorites as a kid and books I still find delightful in my second childhood. Port has crafted a fun and funny story that this retired adult enjoyed reading and thinks children will enjoy too. Many of her chapters end with a hook, drawing the reader into the next chapter out of a desire to find out what happens next. More importantly from a parent’s point of view, Kibble Talk offers wisdom about life that kids are more likely to accept coming from a nine-year old and her dog than from stodgy and impossibly out-of-touch parents. There are a few “butts,” “farts,” and “pees,” which simply says that vocabulary has changed some since the days when I was parenting young children. Today’s school-age children are well acquainted with the terms.

My Kindle version of this book has a couple of formatting errors, a typo or two, and what appear to be a couple of unnecessary tense changes, but these are small and technical glitches that don't warrant the downgrading of the book to four stars. I give it five, and I highly recommend it for elementary school children and their parents.

I'm a fair bit older than the audience "Kibble Talk" is aimed at, so I'm trying to adjust my review accordingly. It's definitely a kids' novel... but that doesn't mean it's not perfectly enjoyable by adults either. It gives a kids'-eye view on a popular concept -- what if a human gained the ability to talk to and understand animals, or at least dogs? -- and manages to deliver a very funny and charming story in the bargain. And if the writing is a bit simplistic for my tastes... well, it's still entertaining, and means that kids will get to enjoy this book as well as adults.

Tawny is nine years old and finds it impossible to turn down a dare... so when her best friend urges her to eat a piece of dog kibble, she takes the challenge. But eating that bit of dry dog food has an unexpected side effect -- she can now understand and talk to dogs! And now that her family's dog, a Great Dane named Dinky, has her ear, he insists that she help him fulfill her lifelong dream... a dream of becoming a tiny lap dog. As Dinky's demands and escapades have Tawny scrambling to fulfill them, she finds her relationship with her friend becoming strained and her parents thinking she's lost her marbles. But Dinky has some unexpected insights into both people and Tawny's family, insights that could change her world for the better...

The writing in this book is quite witty and fun, albeit a little simplistic at times. Cynthia Port does a decent job of capturing the voice of a nine-year-old girl, and I applaud her for creating a realistic family that's not completely dysfunctional or gripped with drama. Tawny is a resourceful character, with her own flaws but a determination to overcome them and do better. Dinky is a rather goofy character, and at times his antics felt a little over the top, but he still provided good comic relief and some interesting food for thought at times. I did find Tawny's "best friend" a little irritating, but hopefully she sees some development in the next novel...

A very funny and entertaining kids' book, "Kibble Talk" is a great read for dog lovers of all ages. There's a little gross humor to be had (c'mon, it's dogs), but overall it's fun and can be appreciated by both kids and adults.

An absolute delight from start to finish. The story of Tawny, a sassy pre-teen girl who finds herself able to communicate with her pet dog Dinky, an enormous, slobbery great Dane with an extremely well-developed feminine side and a desperate urge to release the lapdog within is laugh-out-loud funny. The charming coming-of-age story is delightfully handled with a deliciously light touch. Through her bumbling attempts to empathise with Dinky, Tawny learns to look beyond appearances and beyond herself in a dawning appreciation that the lives of others are more complicated that they seem - and that she can make life better for those she loves by thinking and acting beyond herself. Even though at the time it can cause a certain measure of discomfort! Wit, wry humour, slapstick, and a nice little lesson on friendship, love and family life rolled up into a wonderfully entertaining package, suitable for pre-teens to grandparents. Loved it.

I downloaded this for my daughter. She's an avid reader and she took to this book right away, finishing it in only two days. She found the characters to be likeable, and the story itself is very funny. She literally laughed out loud reading it, something she claims she's never done before. Now she's bugging me to download the sequel. This was an excellent purchase and I recommend it to anyone with kids.

4.0 out of 5 stars An amusing 'coming out' the kennel story.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 22, 2016
'Kibble Talk' is a very cleverly written and witty story.

I know this book wasn't written for ageing, grumpy old punks like me - but I thoroughly enjoyed it all the same. 'Kibble Talk' is a light, fun read, aimed I would say at older children, but it does also contain some amusing comments that will appeal to those of a more mature age, if not mentality. Indeed, Dinky's predicament and 'coming out' reflects the issues felt by many in our human society.

    Yeah. Nice one.
