Kick at the Darkness Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,490 ratings

When the world ends, their story begins.

Parker Osborne is having the worst day ever. He has no friends at college, can’t pick up a guy to save his life, and his annoyingly hot jerk of a TA just gave him a crappy grade.

But Parker’s bad day suddenly becomes a deadly night.

In a blink, he’s surrounded by screaming and chaos and so much blood. People are transforming into zombie-like killers. Parker’s fighting for his life—and without Adam, that muscle-bound jerk who gave him a C-minus, he’d be dead meat.

But Adam has a secret…

Kick at the Darkness is a steamy gay romance from Keira Andrews featuring enemies to lovers, forced proximity, werewolves, the zombie apocalypse, and of course a happy ending (eventually).

So I’m a little late on the Keira bandwagon, this being my first by read by her {bad Cheryl} but this one really sparked my interest at the word Zombie. From page freaking one I was smirking at Parker, and I said so many OMG I can’t EVEN begin to count. This dude was a RIOT! Absolutely every word out of his mouth had me snorting at 1 am in the morning. His “inner goddess” as I would call it, was the best I’ve ever read as an internal monologue. The first image to pop into my head was Styles Stylinson, and I Lurve me some Styles, and then when the paranormal aspect popped up, it was like BAM! This book literally can be read as a movie with all the detail that the author cultivates into the story, I loved everything about how the story adapted and moved the reader along with Adam and Parker. I’m really hoping this is a HFN and we get more of Parker and Adam in the future.

Every once in awhile a book comes along that everyone is talking about but you just can't seem to pick up and actually read. This happened to me with Kick at the Darkness because I'm not at all interested in reading books about gloom and doom and the end of the world. And shifter books need to be extraordinary (like Kendall McKenna's The Tameness of the Wolf series) or I just can't be bothered. But I decided to read this one since I am a big fan of Keira Andrews' work and every one of my GoodReads friends absolutely LOVED this. So, I got started... And didn't stop until late, late into the night until I finished it. I read the entire book in one sitting. Ms. Andrews kicked this one in the ass and destroyed every one of my preconceived notions about an apocalyptic book actually being romantic. This one is swoon worthy!

Parker Osborne is a freshman in collage at prestigious Stanford University, far from home and his best friends, and he's just gotten this first bad grade on a essay about an old movie. He is your typical stressed out overachiever who doesn't make time for much more than studying and never, ever receives anything below an A. When asking his professor to re-evaluate his grade proves fruitless, he is directed to her TA, Adam Hawkins, who is the one who read and graded his paper.

When Parker meets Adam, there is defiantly no love lost between the two. Adam calls Parker out for turning in a lackluster paper, hoping to skate by in an "Easy A" class. When Parker in unable to get his grade changed, he leaves in a huff. What both men don't know is that they are about to join forces in the adventure of a lifetime, relying on one another for their very lives.

Events take a horrible turn for the worse and people are dying left and right. Parker and Adam had a chance meeting again when the s*** gets real and they are about to be overtaken by a horde of zombies. Without thought, Adam and Parker run, with Adam encouraging Parker to keep up. Parker ends up losing Adam, but Adam saves the day by pulling up on a Harley motorcycle and snatching Parker from the clutches of death. And so begins the adventure of a lifetime for them both.

One thing that struck me most while reading this tale was just how funny Parker was. They are running for their very lives but Parker can't seem to stop his smart cracks about any and every thing that catches his fancy. He starts out as a sarcastic, scared kid, always looking to Adam to save his skin, but the progression of his maturity is wonderful to watch from beginning to end. And watching Adam begin to open up to Parker, exposing his secrets and sharing his sorrows was one of the things that made this story so wonderful and beautiful. The relationship these two form is deep and strong and incredibly loving and that is what sold me, hook, line and sinker. They shared their fear, their longing and their passion and held absolutely nothing back.

So, who'd have thought a zombie apocalypse book with an anti-social werewolf and a snotty collage freshman would be such a fabulous read? Certainly not me. But it is that good. And you should RUN to your favorite bookseller and start reading this one ASAP. You will be delighted, I guarantee it. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended. This and For Real and my two favorite books for 2015 so far. I can't wait to re-read this one on a crummy day when I need a little comfort from a beloved book

4 stars - It was really good

Parker Osborne is having the worst day ever. He has no friends at college and his former high school friends have forgotten about him, he doesn’t have a boyfriend or anyone to hook up with, and an annoying hot TA gave him a crappy grade. But in a blink of an eye everything changes when people start transforming into zombie-like killers. Parker finds himself fighting for his life with the annoying TA Adam by his side.

This was a surprisingly great post-apocalyptic romance with a dash of werewolf thrown in. This was a very action packed story with Parker and Adam trying to survive a cross country drive in search of Parker's family. I was also surprised that this is only told from Parker’s POV but Andrews’ did a great job at bringing Adam’s character and personality alive through that perspective. I never felt left out because we didn’t have Adam’s perspective, which is surprising because I prefer multiple POVs.

I will be honest, it took me a while to get into this story at first because I found Parker to be a bit annoying. But he grew on me as the story progressed and he lost his need to be perfect. Parker was an anxious character and we see him struggle with everything that is happening but we do see him become more confident in himself by the end. Adam was the opposite of Parker in that he is calm and level-headed. I enjoyed that these two had different personalities and were very different characters.

“What isn’t crazy now? We don’t know what will happen tomorrow. Falling in love with you is the one amazing thing that’s come out of this mess. The one thing that makes it all worth it.”

The relationship between these two takes a little while since they are busy trying to survive at first. Once their relationship does start though these two fall hard and fast for each other. I loved how they leaned on each other and protected each other. I may have been slow to like these two at first, but once their story really got going I got sucked in and couldn’t put it down.

At the end we see Parker and Adam coming to terms with this new world and realizing that there most likely isn’t help coming. It will be interesting to see what happens next for them now that they have a rough plan in place.

TW: gore; grief; past death of parents and sister; medical experimentation without consent

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem in disguise...
Reviewed in Germany on November 25, 2015

I came across this beautiful story by chance while looking for something completely different. The cover did nothing to draw me in, but then the story sounded interesting - zombies, shifters, apocalypse, romance - I was intrigued enough to give it a go.

And that was the best decision I made - ever!
This is a beautiful story of finding and keeping each other, of first struggles (internal and external) and all that to the backdrop of a very realistic, gritty and bleak future. It was heartwarming as much as it was real and ugly. I loved the combination.

First of, this is a sort of HEA, but with an open end. The couple of Parker and Adam find their way together. But do not anticipate a happy end of the backstory. The zombie apocalypse has no happy ending, but it fits the overal atmosphere and grit of the story. That`s all I am going to say to the ending - make your own discoveries.

It all starts fairly normal: Parker is a young and ambitious freshman and just received his first C- in life - in a class that was supposed to be an easy A. The TA to the class - Adam - is made responsible for his failings and instant animosity hints at strong emotions. Then the zombie apocalyse happens. The creepers overrun campus and Parker and Adam make it out just in time with the help of Adam`s trusty Harley called Mariah (as in Carey). From there on they embark on a road trip across the country, sometimes dodging the creepers just so. There are lovable and scary characters on the way. One can never be sure who is against them or who really wants to help. As the reader I felt a lot like Parker and Adam, discovering this strange new world with fear, death and destruction in it. There is a lot of action, and suspense and mystery, and love and heartwarming friendship. It was a total page-turning. I could not stop until I finished reading the whole book.

I really liked that Parker was displayed as headstrong, young and quick-to-judge, but the author made clear it was not all there is to him. Adam was harder to place at the beginning because he keeps to himself and his underlying loneliness and capacity for love are slowly revealed while on the run with Parker. Both of the main characters are portrayed realistically and according to the developing story. Their romance does not seem rushed but develops in a natural speed. Plus there is some really hot sex, but it`s never over-the-top as in some other shifter stories. Adam being a wolf shifter does not factor into the story as much as I would have liked: it`s more of a fact and a strenght he used when fighting creepers, but on the other hand he is not uber-human. There are no magical solutions or all-powerful packs or heaps of money and that`s what makes this story so haunting.

Make up your own mind, but let me just say: this book is worth every cent you pay for it (if not even more).

I loved it, even when I shed a tear of two. This story grabs you by the balls and never let`s you go. It`s deep and emotional and leaves you feeling positive even amidst all the havoc and confusion.

WOW. I loved everything about this story.

First up, if you're thinking this is just another "sweet little omega gets dominated by his big powerful alpha" tale - then forget it. This is so far removed from that usual trope of the MM genre. Now granted zombies and werewolves AND young adult (kind of), wouldn’t normally be on my to read list, but I’ve read a few of this authors books before and thoroughly enjoyed them, so I thought why not? And I’m soooo glad I did, as this definitely did not disappoint!

This tale pulled me in from the start, as I could actually relate to Parker’s character, what with his ventures into the big wide world and feeling vulnerable and even a bit isolated at first – a new school, job or location etc. I think we’ve all experienced that feeling at some point.

I’ve gotta say, nothing is hotter than the arguments that you know will inevitably lead to scorching hot sex between the MCs. And boy does it ever! The sex scenes in this are blistering. But most importantly, it’s the love that grows between Parker and Adam that was so beautiful to read here. As a couple they were gorgeous, but individually they were just as beautiful. What I loved most was the dialogue between the two, the author got it bang on. I loved how poor, put-upon Adam had to endure Parker’s endless, nervous and inane babbling – it was just so hilarious and realistic. I also thought it was great to see Parker show his strengths when Adam really needed him to, and to watch him really grow up and save his man when it counted. It was actually hard for me to remember sometimes that this was an 18 year old!

This story for me is an absolute gem and a total keeper that I will re-read many times. This one had it all, made me laugh and cry a couple of times, was beautifully written, stangely realistic and with 2 men who I just fell in love with completely and was 100% rooting for them all the way. Just give it a read, it will not disappoint.

So far I have only read light, fluffy Christmas stories by Kiera Andrews. My friend read this series and highly recommended them so thought I’d give the first book a try. Wow!!!! Not only can this author write light and fluffy well but she can write an amazing action story with just the right amount of romance and angst!

This is a single POV story told by Parker. I didn’t know what to think of him to start but I quickly grew to like him and loved seeing him get used to their new world as everything changed. Adam is the other MC in this story and even though we don’t get his POV in this one (we do in book 2 and 3) I still really enjoyed his character. It was amazing discovering his secret and seeing these two become so loyal to each other. At one point I was so mad at Adam but it passed thankfully!

This book is full of action and so many times I was freaked it about what was happening to them but thankfully this book ends on a HFN. I absolutely recommend this book if you’re looking for a fast-paced, action-packed romance! I listened to the audio for this book and the narrator did a great job! I will be starting the audio for book 2 immediately!!

It’s a light and easy read and totally unexpected !

Funny and sexy, the writing was good and the casual style lent itself well to the overall story.

Werewolf and Zombies ? The plot is definitely original and addicting…

The characters were endearing and the romance was on point and very sweet.
The steam wasn’t scorching but good and detailed.

I read the first two books in one sitting and I recommend them.

5.0 out of 5 stars An M/M apocalyptic CLASSIC!
Reviewed in Australia on January 10, 2024
    Format: KindleVerified Purchase
Apparently, I enjoyed this book so intensely the first two times I read it, that I didn’t even have the energy to write a review in the aftermath. Understandable, I guess, because even now, after A THIRD RE-READ, some 9 years after my first apocalyptic adventure with Parker and Adam, I’m still at a bit of a loss for words to describe how much I love these two characters and their pandemic-set story of terror, loss, survival, hope and, most importantly, love.

Back in 2015 this was a fun, edge-of-your-seat M/M thrill read, following college freshman Parker and his slightly older TA Adam, as they are thrust together to survive an ultimate nightmare scenario, after a human decimating virus breaks out, turning people into zombie-like monsters and ending the world as they know it, literally in the span of a few hours. Watching the world fall to ruin and all the horror that goes with the kind of loss and violence Parker and Adam endure in book one, was fascinating to read back then, but always felt at a nice comfortable distance from any sort of reality of our lives.

But now its 2024 and we’ve lived through a generation defining pandemic ourselves, one that, regardless of your personal experience during that time, has changed our lives in countless ways, irrevocably. And I gotta say, re-reading this story now was a whole new experience for me. Sure, what Parker and Adam endure here is nightmarishly worse than what we have been through in recent years, but one can’t help but read pandemic-type books now with a bit more awareness of how damn precarious our healthy global state of life really is, making a story like this all the scarier.

In terms of the writing, storytelling and romance, this book has held up! It’s been almost a decade since its release, and I’ve read countless dystopian/end-of-days type (mostly romance) books in that time, but this still stands out to me as a classic in my personal library—one of those rare unicorn books that I own digitally, physically, and audibly (The Big Three, as I like to call the rare occurrence).

The pacing of this story is particularly noteworthy. The plot momentum holds the entire time, moving perfectly from scene to scene, with nary a moment to stop and rest, making it entirely all too hard to put down once you start. Realising this (for the third time) makes me consider the reality of how few books, regardless of their themes or genre, have such perfect pacing going for them. That one thing alone makes this a standout M/M read of the past decade.

But the positives don’t stop there, because Andrews’ has created something a bit genre defining here, blending lots of contrasting themes in a way that makes this story feel original and (still) unmatched. It’s sci-fi and it’s fantasy; it’s trope-y but authentically so; it’s a love story, and an epic one at that; it's definitely a suspenseful read that'll have your heart racing; and, it’s most certainly a standout in the M/M romance genre—perhaps even an M/M classic, if you’ll permit me to say so, in terms of having one of those stories and book couples you remember no matter how many years have passed or how many other books have been read in between.

Interestingly, I hadn’t forgotten much about Parker and Adam’s story in the many, many years since I last read it, which I can’t say about most re-reads I’ve attempted in the past. Some stories just stick, I guess, and Parker and Adam’s story certainly does in my mind. But the fact that their story is finally ending with the LONG-AWAITED third instalment, Defy the Future, has me excited (and nervous and excited again) in a way I haven’t quite been for a book release in a really long time, so this re-read wasn’t just an indulgence for me but a necessity, in order to do these characters and their larger story justice going forward.
