Kickoff: The Originals (Seattle Steelheads Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 836 ratings

Struggling pro football wide receiver Derek Ramsey was once Rachel McCormick's best friend and lover, and now they're forced together again.

Gifted with an uncanny ability for evaluating football talent and a dogged determination to succeed in a man's world, Rachel finally gets her chance in the pros as a staff member of the Seattle Steelheads. Her first assignment is to help Derek get his game back. While working with him on the field, she succumbs to the chemistry between them and spends a forbidden night in his arms.

The next day Derek has the best performance of his not-so illustrious career. Soon Derek and Rachel are racking up nights in bed, and the team is racking up wins. They're risking it all, but they can't resist each other. Not only is Rachel his coach, but Derek knows the truth behind a secret that destroyed her father years before.

Rachel and Derek are torn between love and duty, and the clock is winding down. It's fourth and goal, one second left in the game. The next play Derek makes must be for Rachel's heart.

Previously published as Fourth and Goal in 2011. This version has been extensively updated, re-titled, and edited.

Reviews for the Original Version:

I really enjoyed this story... I got sucked into this book. I mean, hook line and sinker sucked in. I was deeply invested in these characters. Not just Derek and Rachel, but all of them. Even Derek's asshole cousin, Tyler, who cannot string a sentence together without dropping the F-bomb half a dozen times. Hooked folks, I'm positively hooked.-Recommended Read and Best Books of 2011 from Wendy, the Super Librarian
The ending was heartrending and I loved reading my way through the football season with a player who had lost his mojo.-Jane Litte via Goodreads
Fourth and Goal displayed a deep and comfortable knowledge of football but strangely enough it wasn't the on field shenanigans that I enjoyed the most, but the off the field relationships that the characters developed. ...I was captivated...-Jane at Dear Author
Romance so real that you feel you are there.-Trixie, Blackravens Reviews
A good beach or airplane read and you don't have to know alot about football to enjoy the story.-Alberta, Manic Readers Reviews
The pacing kept me glued to my eReader and hanging onto the edge of my seat... The erotic scenes are passionate and romantic. Jami Davenport is new to me, but I can promise I'll be snapping up all of her stuff from now on... This is a book you don't want to miss.-The Romance Studio
I am thoroughly impressed with Ms. Davenport's ability to instill escapism in her story. For the duration, I was consumed with her tale of two friends to lovers intertwined with football.-Yadira, Night Owl Romance
This book is a hold your breath, heart pounding, gut wrenching love story. It's been a long time since a book has captivated me enough to bring me to tears... With sultry and inventive sex scenes, heartbreaking sorrow, nail biting football plays and a cast that is captivating and engaging, Fourth and Goal is a winner!-Whipped Cream Reviews
Fantastic read, there is nothing better than a football story.-- Alberta, Sensual Reads
I loved this book and I can't wait for the next one.--KurvyK, Guilty Pleasures
Fourth and Goal is a steamy and fun story with a little hint of suspense and a heartbreaking side story. The story and characters are well written and I felt like I knew them and was pulling for them.- KurvyK, WTFReviews

I’ve been reading since I was six years old and this is the first book that made me cry. This is a great love story but Ryan’s story brings it all together. I think that the fact that I have cancer and am undergoing Chemo now probably had something to do with it but it is a well written story of love and courage. Read the book but keep your Kleenex handy.

Fast burn, low drama sports romance.

Derek (Dare) and Rachel were best friends in high school but grew apart. Then, when she starts working for his football team, their attraction is uncontrollable, and they secretly start sleeping together, which improves his game. And of course they fall for each other.

It is very formulaic and at times inconsistent, which names it gard to read.

The one redeeming part and why I gave it 4 stars instead of the 3 it deserves is the whole thing with the high school QB Ryan. That whole storyline was written so well and realistic that I was on an emotional rollercoaster.

Rachel is hired by her old friend's football team as a consultant. Derek is shocked when Rachel is hired. Derek and his cousin, Tyler are on the same team and the team is struggling. Rachel is brought in to see where they can see where they are making mistakes. The coach asks Rachel to give Derek extra attention. These two have a long history. One night changed things between them. Now they are having to work closely together and not to try to think about what happened in the past. Rachel's brother has a football player that idolizes Derek and Derek takes an interest in the player. The whole team does. This book was emotional with Ryan, the football player that Rachel's brother used to coach. Really enjoyed this book!

I loved this book! I didn’t even want to put it down to make dinner. I loved the characters and easy nature of how Rachel and Derek just fit like a puzzle piece. They are meant for each other. It has a great storyline; love, loss, finding yourself, overcoming difficulties. I highly recommend this book, but beware, you’ll need some tissues!

This book was hard to get into, skipped s lot of thought dialog, but by the 20 th chapter this became a gray story.

When you open this book you will never expect all the feels it has. Romance, angst, heartbreaking & heartwarming moments, but what you will have is a smile on your face when you see the words The End.
Derek & Rachel have a history. Some might say it was great others would say not but when they find themselves once again together either they can take the risk of opening up their hearts again or leaving well enough alone. You will love taking this journey with them through all their ups and downs but what you will see is that you will be there cheerleader through it all.

I loved the story itself. The characters were so well developed and the story brought a tear to my eyes a few times, which you don’t expect in a sports romance. The four stars came from several timeline inconsistencies, mostly towards the beginning and middle of the book. They weren’t so bad that they impeded the story, but they did cause me to stop a few times and go back to make sure I wasn’t confused.

I didn't want to read this book. But it sucked me in. I loved the characters. They took away all hope I had for humanity and then brought it all back. I ugly cried somewhere near the end. This author knows how to tell a story that makes you feel like you know the people. I wanted to root for them. I wanted to smack them at times. I highly recommend you read this book.
