Kill Me Again: The gripping psychological thriller with a shocking twist Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 33,405 ratings

A woman is dead. She looks like you.

When Maggie Taylor calls her husband to say she is on her way home from work, she is horrified to discover that her two young children are alone in the house, abandoned by their father.

Duncan doesn’t come home that night, or the next. Where he has gone, and why? All she knows is that he received a message on his phone just before he left - a text with a terrifying picture that only her eight-year-old son saw.

And then Maggie discovers she’s not the only one looking for him. Who is he running from?

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is brought in to investigate when a woman who looks just like Maggie is brutally murdered, and Maggie begins to realise how little she knows about her husband’s past.

She doesn’t have long to decide whether to trust him or betray him, because one thing has been made clear. Another woman will die soon, and it could be her.

A fast-paced, edge of your seat psychological thriller that will take you on a rollercoaster right to the last page.

Sluggish & SO DISAPPOINTED.

Sluggish & SO DISAPPOINTED.
Books are like oxygen to me; I read books like I breathe. During this pandemic, I’ve read at least 2-3 books a week; I’ve probably read over a 100 books this year. I was SO DISAPPOINTED with this book by Rachel Abbott. It was so slow and took so long to finish. I dreaded going to bed to read and couldn’t wait to finish & be done with this book; I just can’t “not finish” a book and at least give it a chance. I had read “The Invitation” and was looking forward to this new author (for me). SO DISAPPOINTED!

I really enjoy Rachel Abbott s writing style. She has a way of keeping you engaged until the last end. Rarely have I been able to determine the ending or "who done it" before the very end.

The switching narrative suits the book exceptionally well, none of the characters feel like clean slates, all are well developed with varying pasts and motives, above all they feel different, and it's always a plus for authors who're able to create different characters via different point of views, and to do so without sacrificing characterisation or making them feel too similar.

The plot is fast-paced and exhilarating, the thinking process of Tom is a high point of this thriller, his calm and composed persona reminds me a lot of famous fictitious detectives like Sherlock Holmes, it's fun seeing how he ties into all of this. It's almost like there're two different stories going on, though all the arcs and subplots tie in nicely at the end.

The writing is most impressive, you can really feel Maggie's fear and desperation seething through the lines, it's strong, compelling and extremely enticing; once you start reading and the plot starts to to pick up, it's near impossible to lay down the book. The biggest plot-wise negative though is Maggie's almost laughable way of dealing with some of the harsh scenarios stacked up against her. At times, the decision she makes is so out of character that it almost feels like she's not a lawyer to begin with. Maybe it's just me but I think she could've handled some of the situations in the book so much better, though she's undoubtedly a likeable character, being charmingly levelheaded and intelligent.

And since there're not really many characters in the book, the "who dun it" gimmick it's trying to pull off kind of gets predictable at the end. The ending is fitting, though it's definitely not as ground breaking as some reviews drummed it up to be. Also, not attempting to look for realism in a crime thriller, but the end does feel a bit rushed and melodramatic.

It's a good read overall, I had fun with the book. But if you're like me, who gets super paranoid when reading thrillers, always consciously picking up hidden clues that may reveal who's the culprit, and in constant bracing for an astronomical AND plausible twist, you will most likely end up feeling disappointed. The critical joints in the book are REALLY up front and obvious, so meticulous and veteran thriller readers might just easily foresee the ending from a mile away (after about 60-70% of reading). For casual readers, however, it's definitely worth checking out if you're into well-written, well paced and intriguing murder mysteries and detective stories.

Loved the book, but surprised by the ending. I can usually figure it out before I get halfway into the book. That little thing at the end was a complete surprise. Not sure if I liked it or not.

3 Stars for Tom and Becky. 0 for Maggie (the main character). This woman has the worst sense of self-preservation of any character I have ever met. She didn't even have the sense to protect her children adequately. She gets threatening phone calls, letters stuck through her mail slot and a guy approaching and threatening her son on the side of the road when they went for a family bike ride!), but she still sends them off to school/daycare/football practice and doesn't even know where football practice is!!!! THEN after she finds out that her husband has been lying to her their entire marriage, she tracks him down and "...she couldn't fall apart yet. Not until she found out if he still loved her"!!!!! What?! Who cares?!! I found myself hoping she would experience the natural consequence of her stupidity in the end (be it death or prison) but no, she got away with everything!

Also, the surprise ending was no surprise at all. I saw that coming a mile away.

I read her previous 2 books and enjoyed them, so I am hoping this is just a weird error in judgment on the author's part.

Kill Me Again is a book you'll find yourself unable to let down. The twists and turns that you'll face will make you want to scream and close the book but you'll find yourself unable to.

    Warning: Potential Spoilers

When the main character, Maggie, finds herself wondering who her husband really is, you will find yourself wondering how someone is able to lie the way he did. I was angry that Duncan, also known as Michael Alexander, had the power to pretend as if he was actually innocent. Even when he basically told Maggie that he drowned the four women years ago, he still pretended and acted as if he was innocent. Even though the anger I have towards Duncan will probably remain, at the same time I felt terrible for Maggie because she loved this man-or the image of the man she was given. It was clear that she loved him endlessly because she actually tried to follow with the escape plan, but her own conscious caught up to her and she wasn't able to. No matter how much you want to scream at her for not going to the police earlier, one must remember that it was her husband who she would be telling on-the man who she was married to for a decade and was the father of her two children.

Rachel Abbott catches you with the first page and the suspense just keeps building from there. This is a twisted plot with a lot of psychological turns and surprises that keeps you reading. It also makes you question how you would react faced with some of the situations that Maggie, the heroine encounters. She arrives home to find her husband of 10 years has left their two children unattended. As she tries to determine what happened, she must protect her children while trying to cope with the unthinkable reality of her situation. A great read!
