Killing It Softly: A Digital Horror Fiction Anthology of Short Stories Kindle Edition
Suzie Lockhart and Digital Horror Fiction are thrilled to present 32 chilling tales of terror from some of the best authors in horror. Killing It Softly includes stories from New York Times best selling authors Nancy Holder and Elaine Cunningham, together with more shocking short nightmares from the finest award winning female writers in the genre.
Your heart won’t stop pounding as you dig into the pages of this book; from the moment you immerse yourself in the first tale, about a women waking to find herself inside a coffin, buried alive, until the last, a coming of age story about a sixteen-year-old’s journey of self-discovery amidst all hell breaking loose. You’ll find your proof that women can, indeed, do a wicked dance between science fiction and horror as they penetrate your darkest thoughts, to bring forth stories promising to leave you with a lingering anxiety you can’t seem to shake. Any romantic notions of vampires will be crushed, and dark and twisted plots will confirm definitively that females can even write about zombies. We dare you to read stories that will leave you deeply disturbed, and some that will slice into your very soul. It wouldn’t be horror if there wasn’t an ode to Edgar Allen Poe...we have two masterfully written tales. There are stories off the odd and unusual, stories that take a perilous dive into worlds of disturbing shadows, and there’s even an exorcism”"in a tale that daringly addresses the heartbreaking disease that is alcoholism.

I freaking loved this! Most horror anthologies I've read have all been from male authors! Lookout fellas these ladies kicked some serious butt! I love how each one has their own flare and style making the stories come to life in a different way. Seriously hoping you are working on a book 2! Very well done! - Leigh Annon (5 Nov 2016)
Great read. - Linda Gordon (22 Oct 2016)
From the Inside Flap
But then I realized the title held a sarcastic tone, because the irony is: these stories are anything but soft! Women authors instinctively knew that, because the short stories flooded in. And because 'Killing It Softly' is a reprint anthology, the submission call lured the best of the best. Making decisions about which stories to feature in this anthology was an excruciating process, because practically every one we received was well above the fray! Finally, however, the selection of dark and dangerous tales was complete, and what we ended up with was a 'Best by Women in Horror' anthology.
The mere prospect of writing an introduction for this anthology was so intimidating that I almost convinced myself it wasn't necessary. What could I possibly say, I thought looking through the list of amazing authors from all over the world now gracing the pages of 'Killing It Softly', that would be worthwhile? I mean, with authors such as: Rebecca Snow, Carole Gill, Carson Buckingham, Tina Rath, Gerri Leen, Elaine Cunningham, and Nancy Holder gracing the pages of this book--just to name a few--well, if you're a lover of the horror genre, you get the picture. I mean, some of these women are award-winning authors; members of the Horror Writers Association; some have appeared in anthologies edited by Ellen Datlow and P.C. Cast; others have appeared in Stephen Jones's 'Mammoth' books of horror; and some--already best-selling authors--nonetheless answered the call.
I was moved when one of the authors thanked me for giving female horror authors a voice. One of the reasons I wanted to do this anthology was because I felt, as a female horror author of dozens of short stories myself, that we were an under-represented, and sometimes misunderstood, group.
I want to thank the wizard behind the curtain, Executive Editor Michael Wills for offering me this opportunity, and S. Kay Nash for all her hard work as Copy Editor. Being Managing Editor for an all-female anthology was something I've longed to do since I had a story of my own appear in 'Mistresses of the Macabre' a few years back. Now, watching this amazing book come to life will be another goal I can cross off my bucket list...

About the authors
Rie Sheridan Rose multitasks. A lot. Her short stories appear in numerous anthologies, including Killing It Softly I and II, On Fire, and Hides the Dark Tower. She has authored twelve novels, six poetry chapbooks, and lyrics for dozens of songs. Most of her lyrics were written for Marc Gunn and can be found on "Don't Go Drinking with Hobbits," "Pirates vs. Dragons," and "As Long as I'm Flyin'" for the most part--with a few scattered exceptions.
Her favorite work to date is The Conn-Mann Chronicles Steampunk series with five books released so far: The Marvelous Mechanical Man, The Nearly Notorious Nun, and The Incredibly Irritating Irishman, The Fiercely Formidable Fugitive, and The Elderly Earl's Estate. Book Six, The Grieving Groom's Gambit, is in the queue, but other cool things are coming before that! (Like the first book in a spin-off series.) Chantal Boudreau is an accountant by day and an author/illustrator during evenings and weekends, who lives by the ocean in beautiful Nova Scotia, Canada with her husband and two children. In addition to being a CMA-MBA, she has a BA with a major in English from Dalhousie University. A member of the Horror Writers Association, she writes and illustrates predominantly horror, dark fantasy and fantasy and has had several of her short stories published in anthologies. Fervor, her debut novel, a dystopian science fantasy tale, was released in March of 2011 followed by sequels Elevation, Transcendence, and Providence. I began writing stories practically as soon as I could hold a pencil. I started with fiction and plays (often inspired by Dr. Who) and a series of secret agent 'novels' influenced by The Avengers and The Man from Uncle, and continued writing throughout a series of jobs before returning to university to get an MA in Linguistics and Literature. I finally got to be a professional writer, freelancing for newspapers, magazines and businesses.
I'm now a prize-winning playwright and short story writer (The Jo Cowell Award, Dark Tales, Lymm Festival, Sussex Radio Playwriting etc.), and my work has appeared in various publications on both sides of the Atlantic, including Dark Horizons, QWF, Time for Bedlam and Daily SF.
Discord's Shadow, the third novel in The Exiles of Ondd series, was nominated for a British Science Fiction Association Award in 2022.
The latest additions to my list of books are an extended digital edition of Artists & Liars, plus an illustrated paperback edition.

Tina Rath lives in London. She has had a number of short stories published in both genre and mainstream press (see ISFDB for some titles)and has several novels currently on the stocks. She is a vampire expert and Queen Victoria look alike, as well as working (when she can) as an actress and model. Her collection of short stories, currently available both as an ebook and a large-print hardback, A Chimaera in My Wardrobe is made up of short fantasy and fairy stories, several based on her experience as an SA. A 'life collection' of her short stories, "Talking to Strangers" is available in Kindle and paperback.
New release for Halloween Paul Finch's 'Terror Tales of the Home Counties' containing a new story by Tina Rath - "Where Are They Now?" -
"She would never have got into a car with a perfect stranger, on a sunny day, when she knew a bus would be along in a few minutes. It’s not as if it was pouring with rain … I mean, she wasn’t an idiot. Sharp as a tack … and they never found anything. Not a trace of her or her belongings. Her bank card’s never been used, her phone wasn’t recycled … Nothing."
Where Are They Now? by Tina Rath
See a review of 'Talking to Strangers' (Alchemy Press) from John Gilbert in Phantasmagoria Magazine 15
When people try to ridicule the horror and fantasy genres as lightweight and frothy or gory and gratuitous puff, I just point them in the direction of authors such as Tina Rath. Dr Rath is truly a renaissance woman; an academic with a fascination for supernatural literature and folklore, an actress, Queen Victoria impersonator, poet, and librarian; she has a formidable intellect and ferocious wit. Oh, and according to Gail Nina-Anderson’s ‘Introduction’ to Talking to Strangers, Tina’s latest short story collection, she is a part-time vampire.
The twenty-nine supernatural tales in her brand new ‘best of’ collection range from the dark and forbidding to the gently humorous, many of them distilling a sense of unease from everyday items in contemporary settings with a hefty sting in the tale. The best stories in the collection demonstrate Dr. Rath’s deep knowledge of classic and contemporary supernatural fiction. Alien encounters is the theme of ‘Talking to Strangers in Finsbury Park’; ‘A Visit to Blastings Manor’ is a superb Christmas ghost story; in ‘This is How It Happened’, a classic fairy tale is given a modern setting. A young cleaner gives a hospital ward an unusually deep clean in ‘Ilona’ and in ‘A Beautiful Boy’, a handsome young man appears to bring out the best and youthfulness renewed in an old folks’ home.
A newcomer at St Walburga’s school shows herself as no geek and no pushover for the bullies in ‘Scruffy The Vampire Slayer’ and a lodger proves more difficult to get rid of than originally anticipated in ‘Sitting Tenant’. ‘Diversion’ takes bus passengers on anything but a magical mystery tour whilst ‘A Trick of The Dark’ poses the fateful question, “What kind of job finishes just at sun-set?”. ‘“It’s White and It Follows Me”’ is a ghostly lament; ‘The Fetch’ in a tale of a ghostly guest first published last year in a collection to commemorate the life of R. Chetwynd-Hayes; in ‘The Bus’, Mrs Fortescue waits for eternity and in the ‘Fifth Sense’ the author engages in some clever lycanthropic olfaction (the lengths to which I go in order to hide spoilers).
Packed full of supernatural fun and surprises, Talking to Strangers… demonstrates the great breadth and depth of Tina Rath’s talent as a writer of supernatural fiction, collecting together the very best of her output during thirty-seven very productive years and four stories which were specially written for this book. Entertaining, dark, perplexing and humorous, the stories will keep horror fans enthralled during many a day in lockdown and beyond.

Convinced she was destined to be an artist, Suzie Lockhart attended The Art Institute of Pittsburgh after graduating high school, but the gnawing urge to write continued to challenge her. Originally, her desire was to write romance novels, but after discovering the innate ability to tell chilling tales, Suzie embraced her inner creepiness. Her middle son, Bruce realized the same passion for the macabre, so it was a natural progression to team up. Over a decade later, they have published enough short stories that they can no longer remember all of them! With dozens of paperbacks publications and e-zines to their name,
they had built a solid reputation and were asked by a small U.K. publisher to edit an anthology. ‘Nightmare Stalkers & Dream Walkers’ took second place in the 2013 P&E Readers Poll. Four more anthologies yielded another award for ‘Fractured Realms’, a charity anthology benefitting the Autism Trust.
Suzie went on to work on the highly acclaimed anthologies, "Killing It Softly 1 & 2, which both hit #2 in the P & E Readers Poll. The second installment also received a Solstice Award for best anthology!
The most recent anthology she worked on was the successful 'Scream in the Night,"
Presently, ‘Team Lockhart’ is focusing their energies writing their YA novel.

Jenner Michaud is a speculative fiction writer with a leaning towards the dark recesses found at the edge of reality. She finds pleasure in weaving stories that push the boundaries of the possible, even if they go bump in the night and keep her up.
An all-around Canadian, Jenner was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and currently resides in Ottawa, Ontario. She spent part of her childhood in a Quebec town bordering Labrador, requiring frequent passage between time zones. Losing and gaining time in 90-minute bursts multiple times a day has helped make her an authority on time travel.

From the day she was born, Bram Stoker Award-winner and Shirley Jackson Award-nominee Jessica Landry has always been attracted to the darker things in life. Her fondest childhood memories include getting nightmares from the Goosebumps books, watching The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, and reiterating to her family that there was absolutely nothing wrong with her mental state.
Since then, Jessica’s fiction has appeared in many anthologies, including Aliens vs Predators: Ultimate Prey, Tales of the Lost, Twice-Told: A Collection of Doubles, Monsters of Any Kind, Where Nightmares Come From, Lost Highways: Dark Fictions from the Road, and Fantastic Tales of Terror, which features her Bram Stoker Award-winning short story, "Mutter." Her debut collection, The Mother Wound, is set for release in 2023; and she's edited the anthologies, That Which Cannot Be Undone from Cracked Skull Press, and the multi-nominated, There Is No Death, There Are No Dead, co-edited with Aaron J. French, from Crystal Lake Publishing.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2018Some of the best horror writing I've read in a while. Each story is from a remarkably talented writer. There are a couple very minor editing issues such as a comma followed immediately by a period, but there's a rare book that doesn't have at least one such error. I loved it and ordered the second one.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2019Typically what I look for in horror stories is a lot of atmosphere. I didn't find much of it in these stories, but they were consistently readable and entertaining. There's a lot of variety here. Many of the stories lean more towards dark fantasy or dark science fiction rather than horror, which I don't mind but some people do. Some stories were definitely more humor than horror, which I didn't like. Stories were clustered by similarity (particularly notable was the haunted house cluster), which wasn't my preference. I did find five authors I intend to look up, so I suppose this book was useful for finding new authors to read.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2016This is an anthology chock-full of chills!
Most anthologies are a mixed bag - you're going to have some stories that shine, and others that are, more or less, filler.
Suzi Wargo Lockhart's "Killing It Softly: A Digital Horror Fiction Anthology" is a 'best of' affair, full of dark and disturbing tales by women. Every story is well worth reading, even though some were more to my taste than others. I found Geri Leen's "What the Rain Brings", Aliya Whiteley's "Songs for Dead Children", and Airika Sneve's "Abysmoira" particularly disturbing.
If you like 'bumps in the night', be sure to pick this one up, and read it alone...
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2017There should be a "zero stars" choice for books such as this. Horror stories , if they are good, should keep you awake at night---not put you to sleep!! I forced myself to finish the book; it took 3 nights ( I kept falling asleep ). I kept hoping at least one story would make my 99 cent purchase not a total waste! But as the old saying goes--you get what you pay for.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2017Normally I steer clear of short stories, as it seems I get wrapped up and invested and the story ends like lover who reaches orgasm before you. This book did just that. Which I guess is what you look for in a short story and in that case there are some brilliant stories in this anthology. I would recommend Killing it Softly as a good read and a selfish lover.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2018I have to say this is one of the best anthologies I've seen on Amazon, normally you can expect half of the stories are filler, whereas this one maintains a high level of quality throughout. Tight writing, well edited, and you have to love the cover. If you like horror as a genre, this is well worth plunking down your token $5.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2016I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and am voluntarily reviewing it.
I am a HUGE fan of both horror and anthologies and I thoroughly enjoyed every story in this one! There are 32 amazing stories in this collection and it certainly does not disappoint! I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a fun Halloween read or for fans of horror in general!

5.0 out of 5 stars Horror at its Best
I gave this anthology five stars because it contains spine chilling stories. Women wrote these stories, and many of them had a twist that raised them up above the usual horror stories. It introduced me to new authors who I want to read more of their works.

3.0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag
This is a compilation of 32 short stories by female authors. Some of the stories were great, some ok and some were rubbish.
If you enjoy short horror stories then give it a go.
