The mystery begins on a routine flight from Hong Kong to New York, straight over the North Pole.

Mitch Matthews is a writer struggling to make ends meet when his wife's brother Josh offers him and his five-year-old Lilly first class seats.

Breaking the rules, Josh brings them up onto the flight deck halfway through. There's a strange magnetic anomaly messing with navigation, and a polar hurricane brewing over the Beaufort Sea that pushes them two hundred miles off course, deep over the Pole.

But everything is fine, right up until...

NTSB investigator Richard Marks

Within hours of Allied 695 disappearing, a massive international search is launched.

Global tensions rise.

No wreckage. No cries for help. No transponder signals. Something happened out there, a bizarre event beyond simply an accident.

Conspiracy theories rage over the internet. Media and grieving families whip into a frenzy as fingers point back and forth. The armed forces of America and Russia push toward the brink of war.

It becomes the job of lead investigator Richard Marks to uncover the truth before the world erupts into chaos, but his newly assigned partner--from a mysterious government agency--seems to be there more for spying than investigating.

Notebook on ice

Weeks Later. Found on the ice. A chance discovery.

A military search team uncovers an object deep in the Arctic. A notebook from one of the passengers on Allied 695. Handwriting analysis confirms that it's real.

Richard Marks secures the discovery back in Washington to begin reading the journal of Mitch Matthews, and it finally reveals the incredible truth...

Mankind is not causing the earth to warm up. The Sun does not need out help.
The story line was well written. I can't see how anyone could thank they could crash a big commmercial jet an expect anyone survive. Not only that the Artic ocean hasn't been completely frozen over for at least 500 years maybe even up to 1000years. All you have to do is ask yourself, what ocean did all the snow and rain come from? That covered all of Canad, and Northern Europe with Glaciers. The finally building when the earths see level went down about 400 feet. That was when no more warm water from the equator could get into the Artic ocean..The one thing you need to get rain and snow is warm water. The spends about 85% of its weather cycle in glacier ages. The earth oceans controls the earths weather.

I received a free copy of this book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

An exciting, engrossing book. I enjoyed this story with its mystery, adventure, characters and plot. Plus, it is a fascinating tale of survival in inhospitable conditions.

Mitch Miller and his young daughter, Lilly find themselves on a ice flow in freezing cold Arctic. On their way home from Japan, the flight crashes into the ice and splits into two parts. Mitch and Lilly find themselves in the first-class pods where there is little food, light blankets and body numbing cold. Along with other surviving passengers they scrummage through suitcases for clothes, the plane’s kitchen for food and grabbing as many blankets as they can find. When the group tries to piece together what happened, they find they cannot remember. No one can remember. How is that possible?

That question becomes the first of many the survivors will face. Not the least of which is how to continue to survive. Thus, begins the adventure to live, the what happened mystery to solve, the who, and they why. All these questions have answers, but they are not to be easily solved. Mitch and a group of survivors set out through incredible odds to find answers while trying to stay alive. Nature and man seem to be working together to stop them from finding the answers.

This tale will have you on the edge of your seat. The characters are well-defined, believable, and likeable. The world is so realistic that I was freezing while reading it. I needed hot cocoa. This was decidedly one of the best books I’ve read in a while. Look for this Author if you want some good reads.

I've purchased some self-published books on Amazon recently that have been horrible, and it has really turned my off them. Even incredibly lousy books somehow get positive ratings. I can only guess that the readers of self-published books are not very discriminating.

This was definitely an exception. An interesting idea, well researched and well executed.

I automatically give anything self published an extra star, but this book (although I liked it) would only have been a three star for several reasons:

The ending got too dragged out and disjointed. I see this in a lot of books (and movies). You think you are at the climactic ending, but then something else happens. Something physical, often during a fight. Like the bad guy you thought was dead waking up and grabbing a gun, and then there are ten more pages, and then he's dead again. It's boring, and there was a lot of that in this book. Also, we didn't learn enough about the peripheral characters. Which wouldn't matter so much, except they were INTERESTING! So maybe that's not a fair criticism. But the really amateur thing was the character of Janda and his caretaker. The "twist" there was obvious from the first time the kid spoke and interacted with the protagonist's daughter. In the end, Janda was tied into the plot of the book, but it felt like an add-on. The concept really wasn't well integrated. The ultimate cause of the crash really didn't drive the plot, so I think there were too many possibilities floated and they didn't add much.

What I did like was the flashbacks to the main character's dad. That kind of thing is usually too ambitious in a novel of this type, and ends up being really poorly done. This was the exception. A dad saving a dad saving a daughter. It was cool.

I think they could make this into a fantastic movie with some of the issues corrected.

Overall the positives definitely outweighed the negatives and I am going to read some more of this author's books.

The is a very exciting mystery about a downed airplane and the passengers who survived. Mitch and his young daughter are bumped up to first class by his brother-in-law who is the Captain on the airplane. They are flying from Hong Kong to New York over the North Pole. Everyone is asleep on the plane (due to a sleeping gas) when it goes off course and crashes. The plane separates and first class has about 25 people and the food, medicine kits, etc. for survival; while the back of the plane has 200 people who survived, but no supplies. There are a lot of conspiracy theories about what happened, why it is off course, etc. Good book.

The writing is so real in this, you'll be wrapping up in a blanket long before it's over! Don't think I'll ever want to fly the polar route. Matthew has done his homework on this one. Not only is it a great storyline, the science behind it is solid. Matthew's not only a writer, first and foremost he's a scientist. He just happens to be extremely good at both and it shows in his writing. It's a thrill ride, start to finish. A father flying with his young daughter finds himself stranded along with some very suspect fellow passengers, including one who seems to be a complete nutcase. A plane that crashes for no good reason. And a set of circumstances that seemingly allow for no survival. And this is just the beginning! Wait until you get to the totally unexpected end. Read it - and then I double dog dare you to fly the polar route! Or any other route for that matter...

The scenes and characters were well developed, very engaging plot, good Flow and consistency, overall good, strong descriptive writing, well thought out and written. However, in the middle of the story of started to drag on. There was still good writing but the story kept going round and round the same sort of ideas and thoughts. I had to skip pages by the time I reached the middle. I held out for a long time before I acted on the urge to start skimming pages. Otherwise I would have given the story four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could you survive in the Arctic?
Reviewed in Canada on February 9, 2019
Reminiscent of Matthew’s earlier book “Cyberstorm,” a very personally relatable story, for everyone with loved ones waiting for them at home. After visiting his in-laws in China, Mitch & his 5 yr-old daughter Lilly, fly home to New York, leaving his newly pregnant wife to continue her visit. After their plane crashes somewhere in the Artic, can Mitch, his daughter & the microcosm of international passengers survive until rescuers arrive?
Unbeknownst to them, unknown geopolitical forces are working against their very survival in the harshest climate on earth! There are more questions than answers as the story unravels. Fast-paced, scary read that I didn’t want to put down, but also didn’t want it to end!! Told in the “first person” by Mitch, makes you wonder if you would be that brave & self-less, & have the stamina to survive in the brutal cold of the Arctic with just their wits & clothing from others suitcases. Thought-provoking twists & turns will have you second-guessing everything & everyone. My only criticism is the idyllic ending. I would have written a different ending. Good research by the author. Spoiler alert: Do you know how to make a magnet?

4.0 out of 5 stars A very well-written, extremely tense story of survival and intrique!
Reviewed in France on June 3, 2022
Actual rating 3 1/2 stars. A very well-written, extremely tense story. It reminded me quite a lot of the first of his "World War C" trilogy, namely, "Cyberstorm" which of course described the apocalyptic struggles of NYC in the midst of a devastating snowstorm (among other issues)! Still, I did have trouble getting into this book as this is typically not a genre I find all that interesting. Yes, there was a Tom Clancy-esque level of intrique and misdirection, not to mention a level of almost too much researched depth and detail, but I never really warmed to the plot. To be honest, I found the characters unrelatable and the situation just too plain bizarre to really feel fully integrated.
Still, I could see where this would thrill absolutely millions of people and wouldn't be surprised to (also) see this one on a streaming channel, particularly if the filming of the aforementioned series does well. Sure, it'd be great in that format, but here, I just ultimately kind of wanted things to hurry up and move forward! But if you're looking for a great holiday, beach-side read, you can do a lot worse than this one. Again, I think Mather is an exceptionally talented writer, but we just haven't been able to align our mutual interests - excluding "CyberWar" which I just adored! We'll see how the next attempt goes some day!
