4.4 out of 5 stars 94 ratings

How far would you go for those you love?

When Valentina López Vázquez vanishes from her home one morning, it’s obvious that she was taken by force. What happened to her next is not so obvious.

The disappearance forces two men on a gruelling search for the truth: Barry Wall, Valentina’s frantic husband, and Joe Byrne, the nihilistic detective in charge of the investigation.

They are locked on a devastating course that will take them to places darker than they ever dreamt – places without limits…

Don’t miss this page-turning thriller. Perfect for fans of Shari Lapena, Peter Swanson, Jennifer Hillier, and Linwood Barclay.

#1 Top of my list, as the Best Crime Psychological Thriller I've read. I've read everything by Alan Gorevan, The Forbidden Room was my favorite. The Kindness of Psychopaths, his largest book at almost 500 pages, is now a new favorite! The research done for this crime thriller, (Detective and police procedural knowledge) was really impressive. The way all the characters lives intertwined was expertly done. The main protagonist Joe Byrne will be remembered as one of my favorite characters in fiction. From the first page, the non-stop action throughout this story displays the special talent that Gorevan masters best. I loved the way this story had at least five separate mini stories all going on at the same time. He kept them perfectly in sync with each other, so the reader wasn't confused but pulled in deeper with each chapter. The hold your breath moments are continuous all the way through and including the last paragraph! If you're interested in: Psychopathic Behavior, unspeakable crimes, dishonest people in power, family drama, bullying, seeking justice, and horror moments, look no further, This is your book!
Warning: When reading this book and you have to put it down, you may experience feelings of intense frustration!
    Highly Recommend! 5 Stars!

A young woman's disappearance takes two men down a very dark path as they work to unravel the mystery of her disappearance. This is a very well-written thriller that will keep you turning the pages from the start. The characters are likable, with a genuinely intimidating antagonist. I've read a number of thrillers which are similar to this one - Thomas Harris' Red Dragon comes to mind - and it's nice to find a well-written thrill ride like this one. It's hard to do a murder mystery well, and Alan Gorevan does a fine job doing exactly that. The pacing is great and the story is intelligent. Overall, I highly recommend at least trying this one if you're into mystery novels.

Police corruption is nothing new but the tale the author weaves kept me turning the page and unable to put this thriller down. The last page gave me chills and that rarely happens!

The Kindness of psychopaths is way better than what one would expect from this book. There is no cheesy lines or sugar-coated characters; just pure reality. The way of a narration of so realistic and convincing that you will feel like you are seeing the incidents live. The author has the natural ability to captivate his audience.
Be it surprise elements, adrenaline-rushing moments, or intensive twists The kindness of a psychopath has got everything one expects from a mystery novel.

I found this to be a solid book and looking forward to more from Mr. Gorevan! Would love to see this in a film.

This book is not for the feint of heart so be ready for some Disturbing scenes. It’s very well written and filled with unexpected twists that took me by surprise!

Love, love, loved it!!! I swear each chapter just got better and better. It was shock after shock. Awesome characters and storyline.

Valentina was scared of the man painting her house. She disliked how he looked at her and could not shake a weird feeling that something terrible was about to happen.

It turns out Valentina’s uneasiness was justified. She was taken from her home, and the only thing left behind were her fingers scattered around the backyard.

The case was handed to the disillusioned and traumatized Joe Byrne, a cop haunted by his past and barely pulling himself together.

The plot was very well developed and kept me intrigued throughout the book. The characters were complex, flawed, and the line between good and bad often blurred.

The story had many twists and turns, and all loose threads were well tied in the end.

I particularly enjoyed the fast rhythm of the narrative. I think this book could easily be adapted to the screen and become a great movie.

The Kindness of Psychopaths is a must-read for fans of the genre and all crime-solving enthusiasts.

    Warning: Violence, murder, cruelty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and unputdownable. One of my all time favourite books!

Whoa, where to even begin with this gem of a book? It was the title that immediately grabbed my attention, but I assure you the content is even more intriguing. What a brilliantly plotted book with gut wrenching action, incredible pacing and shocking twists that you won't see coming. Inhabited with a host of memorable and believable characters, this is a book you won't soon forget. The book is about a gruesome crime that changes people's lives forever, morphing them beyond recognition. I instantly connected with Joe Bryne who fools everyone with his tough as nails persona except himself. Every character is so layered with plenty of emotional depth which is a credit to Gorevan as a writer. Crime fiction is incredibly hard to pull off and with plenty of competition, it is not easy to make a book stand out, but boy does this book stand out! Alan Gorevan is a writer at the height of his powers. He brings Ireland alive for the reader and one can't shake off the feeling that this is a writer who will go places. I can totally see a film or TV adaptation coming at some point in the future. Don't miss this book for the world. This book is required reading for crime fiction fans!

What a title, it just compels you to pick up the book and it the opening chapter just hooks you right in and strikes the fear into you! Well, it did with me!

Joe Byrne is the protagonist, and what a man he is. Just how many awkward situations can one man find himself in, and when I say awkward, that’s putting it mildly! But still he kept going, a detective who just never gives up! I loved this character, he was quirky, fallible but totally relatable and likeable! I want to hear more from him for sure!

This book was littered with characters who will leave you wondering just who you can trust, indeed if anyone! Every single one of them kept throwing surprises along the way! The body count is high, the brutality is brutal and the tension is taut and still the author manages to tie it up in such a way that makes perfect sense, serves a healthy dollop of satisfaction and at the same time leaves you looking for seconds! A fast paced read which stretches the boundaries of credibility at times but you know what, it didn’t even matter because this was a tale to get well and truly stuck into!

The Kindness of Psychopaths is perfect for those who love their punches to just keep coming, for their twists to just keep twisting and for pages full of characters who just keep knocking the wind out of their sails!

Who was the psychopath of the title – well, you will just need to read it yourself and see!

A measure of how much I loved The Kindness Of Psychopaths is that I was supposed to buddy read this book with three other people. I wrote a schedule so we could all read the same amount each day without giving each other spoilers and, well, the schedule was abandoned fairly quickly! It is so fast paced and full of action that it was impossible to put it down after only a few chapters!
Gorevan has written some fantastic characters in The Kindness Of Psychopaths and none of them are people I'd want to hang out with any time soon. It was impossible to know who to trust, but whether they are psychopaths is for us as readers to decide!
There is so much going on in the novel and I have a lot of admiration for the way it is plotted, and little details that seem insignificant at the beginning have new relevance as we reach the conclusion. It's not a book for the faint hearted and it's perhaps not one you should read just before tea, but the tension and the twists and turns kept me absolutely hooked!
The ending definitely sets us up for a sequel so I will be keeping my eyes peeled!

5.0 out of 5 stars Who is the psychopath in this dark tale?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 26, 2021
This book grabs you from the get-go with a mind grabbing opening chapter. The book then draws you in and hangs on until the final chapter.

Briefly, when his wife Valentina disappears, Barry Wall is convinced that the man who was decorating their house was guilty and he takes his revenge only to end up in prison; until he escapes. Joe Byrne is in charge of the investigation, but is also struggling to come to terms with finding out he is a father to a 15 year old son. He also will not rear until Wall is back behind bars...

The course the book takes following Walls escape is dark. Wall has no sense of reason, all he wants is revenge and he doesn’t care how. The twists and turns in this book keep you on the edge of your seat and I really didn’t see the end coming... I hope this is the start of a series. We will see but for now a great 5* read
