This is a combination of three previously released books (that I somehow missed) and I'm thrilled RJ re-released this series. Volume 1 combines Books 1, 2 and 3.

    1. The Vampire Contract
    2. The Guilty Werewolf
    3. The Warlock’s Secret

The world-building RJ does provides the backdrop to the stories of supernatural beings in the middle of changing times and a corrupt ruling "council/government".

The first story is Micah and Connor. Micah is a vampire on the run, trying to prove he is innocent of murder and Connor is the werewolf retriever sent to return Micah for execution. The story is fast-moving and while Micah and Connor resolve some personal issues, the bigger issue of the corrupt ruling council is left dangling to be picked up in Book 2. Extra points for Micah's snark!

The second story picks up where the first ended. Declan is a werewolf retriever hunting for his friend Connor, who has not returned Micah. Levi Tiernan, an incubus, has been assigned by the councel as his companion on the hunt. Again, the story moves quickly and further world-building is provided. The personal issues are resolved, but more and more is revealed regarding the corrupt ruling council.

The third story keeps the theme and starts up where the second left off. Joseph (Micah's twin brother) is a rare vampire that also possesses magic! Phin (Orophin Tiwele - how's that for a moniker?) is the son of the Elf King and has magic of his own. Joseph and Phin have been taught from a young age that two magical beings cannot be together, but the coming trouble has them thrown together and neither is willing to walk away. Phin is another snarky one!

Volume 1 only gets us halfway through the saga, so there's still much to come and I'm now waiting expectantly for Volume 2's release!!

So this volume is made of three previously published stories:
    1. The Vampire Contract
    2. The Guilty Werewolf
    3. The Warlock’s Secret

In book 1, we meet Connor who's a werewolf Retriever (I got a chuckle out of that), sort of a supernatural bounty hunter sent to retrieve a convicted murderer - a vampire called Micah.
Micah has been sentenced for the murder of his human husband and Connor is tasked to bring him to justice. But when Connor meets Micah, his wolf recognises the vampire as its mate and things get complicated. Micah convinces Connor to follow him to find his twin, Joseph who has proof that Micah is not a murderer and led by his wolf, Connor has no choice but to agree. The intrepid duo end up on the run together as Connor cannot return without Micah and Micah will not give up his quest to prove his innocence.

This was my favourite of the three stories, setting up the world for the rest of the stories. Connor and Micah's developing relationship was quite cute actually, watching Connor try to fight his wolf on the attraction that his very human side quite clearly also feels was funny. There was enough action to keep the story going and I enjoyed the anticipation on what was to come.

Book 2 concentrates on another werewolf, Declan who is Connor's best friend. Connor has not returned so he is presumed to be either dead or under a glamour charm from Micah. So Declan is tasked to find him and bring him back, dead or alive. But Declan is not going alone, he is accompanied by the incubus Levi who has been in love with Connor since forever. Levi is convinced the Kingdom's government is corrupt and confessed his thoughts to Declan who in turn was horrified - Declan refused to believe Levi and the relationship between the two soured as a result. But when Declan finds Connor not only alive but on the run, he is forced to rethink everything he knows about his world. Adding his growing affection to Levi only serves to confuse Declan more.

Declan is actually my favourite character in these books (so far). He is adorably stubborn and loyal to a fault but when that loyalty is redirected towards his friends (and lover), it becomes an unwavering strength. The action continues from the last book, with the resistance growing stronger and it's becoming clear that something larger is at foot than any of them expected. We also meet a host of new characters that become more important later on, again setting the stage for the next story.

The third book centres action on Joseph, Micah's twin and the one with magic at his disposal. Again the book starts with a bang, Joseph is captured and tortured to make him confess his magical abilities. But having magic is illegal and confessing it (even under torture) would mean a certain death sentence so although being made to endure terrible things (and a warning here, some of the torture is depicted in detail and is quite horrific), Joseph keeps his quiet. While he's imprisoned, the rest of our little band is worried and are convinced something is wrong. They seek help from Phin, an elf that is a sometime acquaintance of Joseph and Micah and another magic user - though there is bad blood between Phin and Joseph. Phin rescues Joseph and in the process the pair confess their long-dormant feelings to one another. It's becoming clear that the Resistance sees Joseph as their leader by now and the government is putting all their efforts into stopping them.

This was the most difficult book to read. Mostly because Joseph is suffering so very much a large part of the book, and not just physically. Although Micah and Joseph are twins, Joseph is coded older and more mature than his twin - he is a natural born leader though reluctant to take on the role he does excel in it. I also had a hard time getting a read on Phin, there's so much hinted at his background and what drove him to join the resistance movement but not enough to get a real idea of it. Though, possibly all will be made clear in the following books.

All in all, as a compilation this was very good. The individual stories each had their strengths and weaknesses when read alone but together the story becomes clearer and loose ends tied together. I haven't yet read the second compilation but I suspect it will serve to complete the story from where it leaves off here - I think this would have served well even as a six-part compilation simply because of the way the story is built. The writing was good, but I would expect nothing more from the author anyway - she has a certain way with words and phrasing that is just so very pleasing.

I enjoyed this 2 book series very much!
I'm not crazy about the cover pictures though! I think what the main characters look like should be left up to the readers imagination, instead of an authors.
