- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2017Gah! I stopped reading the chapters in her newsletter until Kissing Tolstoy was finished, because I couldn't stand the snippets. Teasing can kill you. Seriously. The angst of waiting for the next chapter causes stress, which causes high blood pressure, migraines and sleepless nights. I was beyond elated to pre-order this book, and then promptly sat down and read it in one sitting.
Penny Reid has done it again. Was there any doubt? Kissing Tolstoy was delightfully brilliant and as usual, smartly written with characters that worm their way into your psyche. Penny Reid is not a typical writer. Not typical is a very, very good thing. This author is smart. VERY smart, which is why it takes me a few days to digest her words. I want to aspire to write a smart review. Alas, I will never be as smart as Penny Reid. It doesn't take away my joy in reading her words.
Anna was a revelation to me. I at first thought she was an immature, overly dramatic engineer major with a love, no, an obsession, of Russian Literature. She was deeper than that, with more spirit than I expected. Plus, she had leather pants. Luca was a rich, strong, tough professor trying to find his own way in the world, while wearing leather pants and riding a motorcycle. He was always professional, but had a dark, passionate under current
Yes. I have read Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Pushkin and Chekov. I find Russian authors to be bleak, dreary, dark and moody. I always thought that they were misogynistic narcissists. That being said, I enjoyed, so much, Anna and Luca's spirited dialogue, and love of all things Russian.
Kissing Tolstoy proves that brains are sexy. Dorks are sexy. Leather pants and bow ties are VERY sexy. Sometimes all you need are the last two puzzle pieces to complete the jigsaw puzzle. And they're usually the crooked ones.
No one writes funnier dialogue. Or more poetic dialogue. From the brain of Anna: "Ugh. His words landed like a physical blow and the wind was forced from my lungs, leaving me breathless. And wretched. Breathless and wretched, the new fragrance from Calvin Klein."
And the lovely Luca: "Come self-sufficient. Come powerful. Or come weak and uncertain. Just come to me. And stay. Trust that you are precisely the right piece, because you are the missing piece - in my life and of my heart."
Penny Reid writes words full of power. She writes words full of life. She writes words full of humor. She writes words full of sorrow. She writes words full of poetry. She writes nuanced characters that are so very human.
If you are a Penny Reid fan, this wonderfully, poetic little gem of a story will not disappoint you. If you've not read Penny Reid, that is your loss. Read this. After you are done, you will continue to think of her words for days, if not weeks and months, and then I guarantee that you will go and purchase every single thing she's ever written. Your life will be much richer with a little Penny in it.
AND! All proceeds go to Hurricane relief. Because not only is she an amazing writer, she's an amazing human being.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2023Anna Harris is a self-proclaimed nerd who studies electrical engineering, loves puzzles, trivia and books, more specifically, the great Russian novels. When she finally manages to snag a spot in a highly coveted Russian Lit class over the summer, the last thing she expects is to come face to face with the man she met on a blind date and ran away from months before.
Luca Kroft is an indecipherable man. He teaches in a three piece suit and a bowtie, but he also rides a motorcycle and is as brooding and mysterious as the characters of the books he teaches about.
This is my first venture with this author and I have to say I fell in love with these characters. Anna is strong and confident in her own skin and will stand her ground to unpredictable Luca until she is not while Luca is so restrained it hurts. I loved her passion and their chemistry and found the book deliriously romantic.
One of the things I liked most was that this book is short and unpretentious, but still a great story. I’d have liked to get further details on Luca’s relationship with his father, given the influence of the latter’s actions on his personality, but that’s a me thing. It doesn’t affect the story or the final outcome for the couple.
In all, this was an amazing read to meet a new to me author.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2017Kissing Tolstoy is the expanded version of a newsletter serial entitled, Nobody Looks Good in Leather Pants or (Bowties). Originally, the story was written for a website as a short Valentine’s Day story a few years ago. Then, the short story was made into a full length book that was released as a newsletter serial. In the newsletter version, one chapter was released every month for about a year. It was pure torture waiting each month for each part to be released.
This expanded versions added two chapters from Luca’s pov(the newsletter version didn’t have any Luca pov), a little more background information on Anna and Luca’s families, two more Anna chapter, and a two part epilogue in Anna and Luca’s povs.
Personally, I liked the newsletter book title and cover better. However, I get why cover and title needed to be changed.
At the start of the story, Anna I Harris is ready to get back into the dating game. Close to a year ago, Anna’s last boyfriend broke up with her on Valentine’s Day by sending her a picture of him making out with another girl. After that, Anna swore off men for all eternity with the exception of her boyfriends. Anna’s best friend/roommate Emily says she knows the perfect guy for Anna. Anna figures what has she got to lose. She emails the guy and tells him to meet her on Valentine’s Day and that she will be one in leather pants.
While Anna is waiting for her blind date, in walks the gorgeous Luca Kroft (clad in leather pants). Anna assumes this hottie is there for someone else because he isn’t like Emily described him. It turns out that Anna emailed the wrong guy. When Anna finds out she ends up freaking out and comes to the conclusion that he would never go for a girl like her. Luca doesn’t even get a chance to tell her his name on their blind date. She thinks that he isn’t her kind of nice and she definitely is not his kind of nice. Anna doesn’t think a hot guy like him would ever be into a dorky girl like her that loves Russian Literature, second breakfast, Tuesday trivia night, 80’s dance night, assembling jigsaw puzzles, drinking boxed wine out of her Grandmother’s tea cups, and who occasionally talks to herself.
Fast forward several months, Anna gets into this Classical Russian Literature class for a summer semester. She is elated, because she has been trying to get into the class for two years. It turns out that Professor Kroft was her blind date. Thus, begins what Anna thinks is her version of a tragic Russian romance.
I really enjoyed this story. I loved Luca and Anna and their verbal sparring over Tolstoy. Anna was hilarious and very quirky and I liked that about her. I found Anna to be very authentic and genuine. Anna is one of those characters that you wish was real and that you could be friends with her. I think Anna would be so much fun to hang out with and there would never be a dull moment with her. At times, Anna could be immature and impetuous. I think Anna’s reactions were understandable given the situation. Luca is one of those male characters that you wish was real because he is the entire package and more. At times, Luca was mysterious and frustrating. He did seem to give Anna mixed signals, however I get that it was uncharted territory for him. I’m so happy that Penny added some of Luca’s pov into the final version of the story. The newsletter version didn’t have Luca’s pov in it. When I was reading the newsletter, I wanted Luca’s pov so bad. I feel that the addition of Luca’s pov was valuable to the story. It enabled the reader to gain a better understanding of Luca’s mindset.
I liked that Anna and Luca met before they were student/teacher. I think Penny presented the story in a way that it didn’t come off as too taboo. Luca was 31 in the story and Anna was 21. It was a big age difference, but Anna was an adult. I felt that they were intellectual equals. Also, Anna was an Engineering Major so she wouldn’t have other classes with him. She was taking the Russian Lit class more for fun and didn’t need the class for her major. Summer classes are usually a little short than regular semesters so I figured he wouldn’t be her teacher for as long (that summer course seemed to go on forever though). Furthermore, Anna was a senior so graduation wasn’t that far off. I didn’t see Luca as reckless. He wasn’t one of those professors that does a ton of dumb things and basically asks to get caught. Luca took the situation very seriously and wanted to do what he felt was best for him and Anna. I think it’s a good thing that Anna didn’t get into Luca’s class two years prior because it would have made thing a lot more challenging/risky for them. Had Anna gotten into Luca’s class two years earlier, the end result might have been a little closer to one of those tragic romances in a Russian novel .
I feel that Anna did misjudge/stereotype Luca a bit when she first met him based on his appearance. Like I said before, Anna kept saying that Luca wasn’t her kind of nice and she wasn’t his kind of nice. Anna thought Luca would get bored with her when she is anything but boring. It’s true; they weren’t each other’s usual type. Before Luca, Anna dated guys that she considered nerdy nice guys. They were guys who she saw as safe and in her comfort zone. She wasn’t heartbroken when any of those relationships ended. Luca usually dated women that were prim, proper, and delicate. They were the type of women who got his father’s stamp of approval. Anna was the opposite of Luca’s past girlfriends. Luca was used to thwarting off female students advances, whereas Anna was often running away from him. He had to track Anna down and put more effort into it. I like and appreciate that there wasn’t any drama with other men or women in the story.
I love when authors incorporate other books into their story. Tolstoy’s books War and Peace and Anna Karenina are discussed in the book. The characters Andre (sometimes referred to as the Russian equivalent of Mr. Darcy) and Natasha from War and Peace are mentioned a lot throughout the book I haven’t read either book, but I did see the War and Peace miniseries from a few years ago. Also, I did see the movie version of Anna Karenina with Keira Knightley. Anna and Luca heated discussions over the Tolstoy’s works, seemed like a form of flirting and foreplay for them.
I liked that Anna and Luca were attracted to each other’s intellect even more than each other’s looks. Luca was intrigued by Anna before he ever met her because of her email. They did find each other very attractive, but they fell the others mind even more.
“Of course, I did have a crush on him. In an odd reversal of social norms, Luca’s external hotness played second fiddle to the sexiness of his brain. Most of the class- both male and female- had a crush on his brain. Fact.”~Anna
Obviously, Luca is an expert in all things Russian Literature. He has studied and taught it for years and is very passionate about it. I think Anna challenges Luca’s views and ideas that he has held for a long time. He gains a new perspective even if he often disagrees with Anna’s thoughts when they discuss topics from Russian Lit. In turn, Luca teaches Anna to look at thing in a different way. Their shared love of Russian lit fueled an even greater passion for it in both of them.
Another thing I liked about the expanded version is that the reader gets a little more of Luca’s background. Luca has always wanted to succeed based off of his own merit and not because of his family name/influence. Luca talks about his father in this version. Luca’s father wants him to be more involved in the family business. I was a little surprised that Luca’s father didn’t make an appearance in the book with how much Luca talked about him. On the one hand, I was okay with the father not making an appearance because he would have caused drama. On the other hand, I really wanted to see Anna meet Luca’s father and see his reaction to her. Luca didn’t think his dad would like Anna. If anyone could win over the guy I think its Anna. Anna is very likeable.
I liked getting to see some more interaction between Luca and his sister Dominika in this version; however I wish there would have been more interaction between Dominika and Anna. I hope that Dominika gets a story. Maybe she could end up with one of Luca’s colleagues.
I still wish that there would have been a bit more of Anna and Luca doing things that Anna liked. It would have been nice to see Luca going to trivia night or building a jigsaw puzzle with Anna (I really wanted Luca to get Anna a Tolstoy jigsaw puzzle) etc… There was mention of a gala that Luca might have to attend. I wish there would have been a scene of Luca and Anna attending that the gala that way Anna could see a little more of that side of Luca’s life. Also, I wanted to see the classes reaction to them getting together. I hope that Penny will maybe write a bonus scene or two for them at some point. I hope to see Luca and Anna pop up as side characters in the other books in the series. Overall, I was satisfied with the final version of the story. A lot of the things that I wished for in the newsletter version were added to this version.
Luca was definitely made for Anna. He is beyond her dream guy. Anna loves Russian Literature. Luca is Russian Lit professor. Also, Luca happens to be Russian and speaks the language fluently. Plus, Luca has the library collection of Anna’s dreams. Finally, Luca happens to looks good in leather pants and a bowtie and Anna says nobody looks good in leather pants (or bowties). It turns out that they are each other’s kind of nice after all.
“We fit together like custom pieces from a two person puzzle. And therefore, you are exactly my perfect kind of nice.”~ Luca
The second book in the Professor series will be about Anna’s friend/roommate Emily. Emily’s book will first be released as a newsletter serial. The newsletter version is called Nobody Looks Good Naked. Penny said that the newsletter serial will start in June 2018. I’m guessing that is will probably take about a year for serial to finish. Then, Nobody Looks Good Naked will be published under a different title with a different cover.

4.0 out of 5 stars What was unexpected was how much i would fall in love with Anna
The idea of a student teacher romance is always thrilling and this book delivered all the thrills, there is no doubt about that. What was unexpected was how much i would fall in love with Anna. Her character was very well written and struck a chord with me as some of her character traits are shared by me. Luca was mysterious and enigmatic but the chapters in his point of view really gave insight into his vulnerabilities also. I liked that he was not a macho alpha hero who feels he is entitled to the heroines love. He was vastly more sensitive and aware of his shortcomings. The one thing i didnt like was maybe the ending. I wish there was little more in the book about how they deal with this newfound love. The ending read more like a short summary. And I wish Luca had a few more chapters in his pov to get a better understanding of his character. But these minor issues aside this was great read for me.

5 Stars! - Loved this book. So good. Penny Reid’s wit and writing is amazing. I devoured this story and still wish I had more. Characters had great chemistry, was a wonderful slow burn kind of thing. The narration was done well and I am super glad I read this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute ripper of a book a true delight.
So I succumbed again and read a M/F novel and I have to tell you I am so glad I did. Kissing Tolstoy was a pure Gem, and I thoroughly enjoyed every word. I’ve never read a Penny Reid book before and really that’s almost criminal on my behalf, because she is seriously, seriously funny, and clever, and smoking hot with her sexy times (when our couple finally get there) and yeah the slow burn was delicious. I’ve read War and Peace, and watched the teleseries, but I loved the use of the book here in this novel, silly Natasha and Andrei both needed a rocket in Tolstoy’s novel. Thankfully the sexy leather wearing Luca was fabulous as was Anna, she owned the heck out of her brain, love a smart sexy woman, and I have to say I adored Emily, the woman near killed me with her funny wit regarding relationships. So, so, so glad I read this. Thanks Ms. Reid.
