4.3 out of 5 stars 501 ratings

Matthew Graham committed the mistake of his life when he cut off his brother’s nose. In revenge, Luke Graham has Matthew abducted and transported to the Colony of Virginia, there to be sold as indentured labour – a death sentence more or less.

Matthew arrives in Virginia in May of 1661, and any hope he had of finding someone willing to listen to his tale of unlawful abduction is quickly extinguished. He also realises that no one has ever survived the seven years of service – not on the plantation Suffolk Rose.

Fortunately, Matthew has a remarkable wife who has no intention of letting her husband die, and so Alex Graham sets off on a perilous journey to bring him home.

Alex is plagued by nightmares in which Matthew is reduced to a wheezing wreck by his ordeals. She prays for a miracle to carry her swiftly to his side, but fate has other plans and what should have been a two month crossing turns into a yearlong adventure from one side of the Atlantic to the other.

Will she find him in time? And if she does, will she be capable of paying the price required to buy him free?

"Belfrage deserves the highest of praise for her mesmerising narrative and her authentic historical detailing!" The Coffee Pot Book Club

About the Author

Had Anna Belfrage been allowed to choose, she'd have become a professional time traveler. As this was impossible, she instead authored the acclaimed Graham Saga, a time-travelling series set in the seventeenth century. Her latest series is set in the 1320s and features Adam de Guirande, his wife Kit, and their adventures during Roger Mortimer's rise to power.

Had Anna been allowed to choose, she'd have become a professional time-traveller. No luck there, so instead she became a financial professional with two absorbing interests; history and writing. These days, Anna combines an exciting day-job with a large family and her writing endeavours. Plus she always finds the time to try out new recipes, chase down obscure rose bushes and initiate a home renovation scheme or two.

Anna has authored the acclaimed time travelling series The Graham Saga , set in 17th century Scotland and Maryland, as well as the equally acclaimed medieval series The King’s Greatest Enemy.

Anna has also published The Wanderer, a fast-paced contemporary romantic suspense trilogy with paranormal and time-slip ingredients. Her September 2020 release, His Castilian Hawk is a story of loyalty and love set against the complications of Edward I’s invasion of Wales in the late 13th century.

Her most recent release, The Whirlpools of Time , is a time travel romance set against the backdrop of brewing rebellion in the Scottish highlands.

All of Anna’s books have been awarded the IndieBRAG Medallion, she has several Historical Novel Society Editor’s Choices, and one of her books won the HNS Indie Award in 2015. She is also the proud recipient of several Reader’s Favorite medals as well as having won various Gold, Silver and Bronze Coffee Pot Book Club awards.

Having enjoyed A Rip in the Veil, I approached Like Chaff in the Wind with some trepidation. Would the second book be as good as the first, or was I up for a disappointment?
Halfway through chapter one, I knew I was in for as exciting a read as in book one, and for the coming days it was all I could do to lay the book aside for such minor irritants as work and household chores, so eager was I to return to the world of Alex and Matthew, Ms Belfrage’s vivid – and very human – main characters.

The dialogue is great, the descriptions evoque smells and sounds, and sometimes it feels as if I’m watching a movie in my head. Historical detail is inserted skillfully, there are a number of endearing cameo characters ( I love Mrs Gordon) and in general the language is very enjoyable – at times even poetic. The story as such is fastpaced, with twists and turns that kept me glued to the book, and yet despite all this action this book is mostly about love, the enduring kind of love that has Alex traipsing halfway round the world in search of her man. I guess I’m a sucker for that kind of story, because with Matthew and Alex Ms Belfrage has created a couple that has me totally hooked. I like how they interact, how they love and fight, I love the honesty between them and how vulnerable they dare to be with each other.

It was with relief I discovered the next Matthew and Alex book is due this summer. I for one can’t wait to find out what happens next!

I'm a devotee of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series. While waiting for her new book, I found the Graham Saga. The books are good, entertaining reading that again deal with time travel. The manner in which time travel occurs in the Graham Saga is a little hard for me to accept. However, the characters are real. Their struggles, in a time when history is changing the world around them, gives the reader a glimpse into the past we've often only known from the history books that never deal
with the effect such times have on the lives of the ordinary people. They are people of strength and courage. People who choose to leave their homeland when right and justice no longer are the base of society. People who willing brave a new world to forge a life based on the rights and justice of their beliefs. I believe anyone who is a history buff (England and America 1600-1800) and enjoys the possibilities time travel offers, would enjoy these books.

I love a good time-travel story, and this is another very interesting concept for "how it happens". As for life in the 17th Century, it's got similarities to the Outlander series, which takes place in the 18th Century. Both are very interesting as to how they experience the adjustments a modern person makes to life in another era! Love the little anachronisms, like Alex's verbal expressions that are such a curiosity to Matthew. Very nice love story-- and agonizing "hate" story too, which causes a lot of the drama-- but all these types of stories have to have that drama-- it's just hard to take sometimes. Anyway, I finished the Gabaldon series years ago, and it's nice to have found the Graham saga.

Poor Matthew was abducted by his brother and sold into slavery. He was treated badly and almost died a few times. His wife set out to retrieve him and took a very long time. Two years later they returned home but the brothers are enemies.

I won't go into detail about the events in the book... I always hate when people give too much of the story away in their reviews. But I will say it was hard to put this one down...waiting to see Alex & hard headed Matthew get out of one mess just to get in another. Not a real relaxing book to read but it keeps you on your toes.

I like the books, but sometimes the temperaments of the couple strike me as juvenile. Having hissy fits, without putting words of depth to their thought life, leaves me a bit disappointed. There are varied activities and re-occuring characters which keeps interest. However, I just don't know what the female lead is all about. She seems really just an everyday woman, not really exceptional, no skills (just karate)...somehow I've missed what her personality type is, and what her job skills were before the time travel. There are some evil characters which keep showing up to do bad things to upset the peace. Still...it's somewhat close to Outlander...and I honestly think the books are somewhat similar. Maybe the author, Anna, was not copying but was saluting Gabaldon's books?

I love Alex and Matthew and can't wait to start the next book and see where their story takes them next. In this episode, you'll hold your breath as Alex tries to get to Matthew before his almost-certain death. It's a race against the clock, and these poor kids are in a constant uphill struggle, and slow travel back in colonial days doesn't help a bit. Matthew's brother needs to die a slow, agonizing death.

In want of an absorbing read, I turned to this second book in the series. When I enjoyed the first book, I thought the time slip element was hardly necessary; it was such a good historical novel. During this book, I suddenly ‘got it’ and became hooked and the importance of the time slip gripped me. I was pleased to have more glimpses into the ‘current day’ our heroine, Alex had left behind. Some of my unanswered questions from the first book were dealt with very neatly and convincingly. Anna Belfrage is certainly a wonderful storyteller. I feel lucky to have so much of the series ahead of me.

Enjoyed the way Anna Belfrage keeps your mind active throughout the book. Association with the present times makes the 1600's more realistic and definitely brings the reader fully into the story with imaginations. Well done,

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 31, 2014
Having enjoyed A Rip in the Veil, I was a little anxious about whether this sequel would be as good. I needn’t have worried. In fact, I think I liked it better! The relationship between Alex and Matthew is developing nicely, stabilising as they add to their family. All the good guys and bad guys are there, both the addition of some exceedingly unsavoury new bad guys.

Occasionally, I wanted to shout “Noooo!” as either Alex or Matthew (mostly Matthew!) did something silly, but that “something” usually racked up the suspense which was deliciously tense throughout. The harshness of the 17th century colonial America for indentured - read slave - labour was grimly described: meagre rations, gruelling, long days of work, beatings and ground-in indifference reminded me of accounts of 1930/40s Nazi Germany.

The timeslip story adds another layer and allows us to engage well with Alex. I hope it’s not a spoiler, but I thought Isaac’s visit was a little short and would have liked to have seen him stranded until the next book, but that’s a personal niggle. The writing is vivid and succinct, drawing you on inexorably to the next chapter. Ms Belfrage, I will be reading your next book very soon.
