About the author

I was born in the 1980s in Yorkshire and live in Essex, where I belong to a small pride of cats. I have a second cousin who made the Guinness Book of Records for brewing the world's strongest beer, and I once ran over myself with a Segway scooter. These two things are in no way related. I've worked in an airport, a lab, and various shops, but much prefer writing because me and mornings are definitely not the best of friends.
I sold my first book in 2005 and since then have published many award-winning paranormal and contemporary romances and light-hearted mysteries, including the popular Sophie Green series. My sci-fi action romance Max Seventeen won the Paranormal Romantic Novel of the Year from the Romantic Novelists Association in 2017. Under the pen name Cat Marsters I also had a successful career in erotic romance, winning an Epic award in 2010.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2024Somehow, for me, right now, this was perfect. I wish it didn’t have to end. More complex than your average rom com, with wonderful handling of issues around trauma.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2018The title of this book might make you think of some cosy rom-com, all candy floss romance and very little plot - think again! Yes, there is romance but there is PLOT in spades. This rom-com has bite (but no, there are no vampires - just ghosts) and a tough story to tell. I loved the characters - especially Jen and Quinn - and the locations. There's even a good section of it set in my home town of Dublin. There are parts of the story which aren't an easy read, but in the end it more than repays the effort.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2020Good characters and story line. The main characters are engaging and compassionate. The author was able to treat some difficult mental health issues with understanding and compassion. Will read more from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2024I keep thinking about it after I finished it. I’ve read it twice in two days. It’s good but more than that is just…sticks with you. I think that’s rare and special for a book. Especially from me since I plow through them at a rate of 1-2 books/day. Will def read more from this author.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2024…this book is not a romcom and it is honestly bizarre and kind of gross that it has been marketed as such. It is dark and heartbreaking. I’ve given it four stars based on the book it is rather than the book it claims to be. I really did love it and wish to give the author the benefit of the doubt and blame the label on the publisher.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2019I absolutely loved this book, from the big themes to the small scenes. I am going to buy a paperback copy too so I can lend it to people who don't have kindles. That's how great this book is.
To pick just one thing out: I was very touched by the fact that the romantic leads had physical scars. I have scars myself and wasn't expecting to be so moved to see my own experience in the story, but I really was.
I don't normally read supernatural settings but that didn't matter. I want more books in this setting as soon as the author can possibly manage it please!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2022Jen is able to see and communicate with ghosts. Her best friend is a ghost named Alice. She moves to a small town hoping to avoid seeing ghosts. She has a new job working in a PI’s office.

5.0 out of 5 stars Characters that stay with you
This is such a clever book. ‘Little Haunting by the Sea’ is a witty, acerbic romantic comedy with underlying dark themes. Kate Johnson’s writing is so spot-on that the settings feel very real and every character (even the dead ones) are sharply and believably alive. The two main characters, especially, grabbed me by the heart and wouldn’t let go. Love, grief, guilt and joy are seamlessly interwoven within the story. Five awed and awesome stars. Definitely my book of the year!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, thought provoking romance - with ghosts.
If you are looking for a romantic story where the heroine relocates to an idyllic seaside town, gets her dream job, meets a gorgeous guy ... this isn't it, or not all of it. If you are a fan of Kate's you'll know that there will probably be a lot more going on. In this case the other things can be dark, and difficult - grief, disability, self harm, abuse - and as the title suggests, there are a number of ghosts, friendly and unfriendly, taking part in the action. If you are ready for all that, it is a satisfying read, with a positive ending, and one that I very much enjoyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very clever and sensitive writing.
I have read Kate's 'Untied Kingdom' and thoroughly enjoyed it and have just purchased and read this one. What I enjoy about this authors work is that the lead characters aren't perfect, in fact far from it. the plots are so well planned and the books written with skill and sensitivity. I couldn't put this down once started and really couldn't predict the ending with confidence. The twists and turns towards the end were very clever. I won''t spoil the plot for anyone but would advise give it a go, you won't be disappointed

5.0 out of 5 stars couldn’t put it down.
Usually I’ve worked out what the ending would be, but this one got me! Well written, a bit of everything. Couldn’t put it down, enjoyed it very much. I need to read more from this author.
