Cracked But Never Broken (Laughing P Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 106 ratings

Damien Payne served his time on the front lines, surviving ambushes and dust storms. Coming home to the Laughing P Ranch should have been the easy part. Lexi isn’t as naïve as when Damien enlisted. With rustlers and a stalker, she doesn’t have time for sweet words and empty promises if she plans to keep the ranch thriving, especially from the handsome devil of a Payne. Unable to act when Lexi needs him the most, secrets Damien thought were buried surface, and he must decide what’s more important—winning Lexi’s heart completely or letting her go. This is book 1 in the Laughing P trilogy following Damien, Lexi, and Darien.

What people are saying:

  • "This is the first "romance" I've read that I thoroughly enjoyed! Usually, we think of romance with a predictable plot, overly dramatic soap-opera characters, and that sudden resolution into the 'happily ever after." THIS is romance. THIS is developed characters, with realistic issues, flaws, and feelings. THIS is a love story, with the full gamut of emotion one expects between lovers. THIS is a drama, a mystery, a family story."
  • "I had pondered on this book for a while and decided to read it and I so glad I did. Boy, what a gem. I can't stop thinking about it. Once I got into it, I was hooked, still am. I love the characters and the feel of the story and where it goes. I couldn't read fast enough. I could go on and on, but all I can say, is this book really got to me. It went beyond reading. It will stick with me for a long time. And, I immediately went to book 2."
  • "What a ride! Not what I expected, and so worth it!!! OMG Can't wait to read the next one."
  • "One word: Exciting!"

I read a lot and most of the time the book simple ends up... good. I had pondered on this book for a while and decided to read it and I so glad I did. Boy, what a gem. Excellent characters who grow throughout, and you can just feel their internal conflicts. It's a dark-yet-hopeful story, and an outstanding first book for this author. Although I don't normally read romances, this has romance and so much more, that kept me interested throughout the book. The pacing is fast, with little room to relax - you'll want to keep reading until, sadly, the last page comes up and you're left wishing there were more. The hallmark of a great read! I can only imagine the author will continue to grow as a storyteller, and based on this great book, I expect her next book in the series to knock my socks off. There were some minor editing issues, but it only detracts from the reading experience in a couple places. My understanding is that the next book in the series is from Lexi's viewpoint, and I can't wait - she's easily one of my favorite characters in this book. All in all, if you enjoy romance novels, or contemporary fiction, this book will be a fine read. In fact, it had be in chills in a couple of places, which is a great thing to say about any novel.

Rich descriptions, turmoil bubbling under the surface, and complicated relationships—this is an awesome romance book. Holloway does an amazing job setting scenes on a ranch, so much so I feel a little educated about ranch life walking away from this book. Damien, Maw-Payne, Lexi, Darien are all such life-like characters with real, relatable human problems. I don't usually do romance, but this was a great page turner with so much storyline to discover.

Damien comes home to the ranch, after military service. He has to adjust to being home, and all that it entails. There are just so many changes....

Lexi thought he would never come back. He seemed to like staying away. What was once a promise now actually may be a possibility. Only danger lurks....

This story caught me off guard! There is action, humor, heat, and more. I found that there were some character I really liked, and some I just wanted to off myself! The main characters are easy to root for, only theirs is a more complicated story. Fun and quick read.

THIS is developed characters, with realistic issues, flaws, and feelings. THIS is a love story, with the full gamut of emotion one expects between lovers. THIS is a drama, a mystery, a family story. Holloway doesn't bludgen you over the head with backstory; there's just enough that you KNOW it's there - developed, complex, relevant, consistent - but you don't have to have program (or a history degree) to follow it. There are teases and hints of exciting tales in the past that are yet to be revealed and fabulous events yet to come. I would say that I wished I had written this... but then, I wouldn't have had the immense pleasure of READING IT!! Thank you, Kari! In the parlance of the wild west, "You done good!"

Gosh what a tangled web we weave. Such a fertile imagination this author has. I am glad the protagonist has a strong spirit. I could never had survived what happened to her. The must be wonderful to be so stupid willed.

I don't normally read romance, and my idea of Southern Fiction has always been Fannie Flagg and Tennessee Williams, so I was in for a real surprise with Cracked But Never Broken by Kari Holloway. It is the story of a Marine, Damien Payne, returning to his family ranch, The Laughing P, after a 6-year enlistment, and his struggle to find his place and overcome his demons. The characters in the extended Payne family are evocative of Edna Ferber's Giant and Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. I could hardly put it down. Cracked but Never Broken is a definite must read.

A good book that keeps you guessing and wondering at the end of each chapter. I really loved how relatable the characters were and their relationships with each other, especially the twins'. You also felt like you were right there on the ranch through Kari's descriptions.
