Love's Unexpected Gift (Something Unexpected Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 146 ratings

Pining after your best friend and roommate is all fine and dandy until you’re faced with tragedy. Then it kinda loses its appeal.

It’s always been me, Hayden, Jeff, and Tristen for as long as I can remember. The four of us against the world. But now that Jeff and Tristen are gone, I can’t help but think about all of life’s ‘what if’s’. Could I risk it all at a shot at love? ~Matt

Jeff and Tristen named us their daughter’s guardians if anything should happen to them. Matt and I have gone from two alphas who live together to a family of three. We love Emma like our own, but my heart longs for more. When I offer to help Matt with his rut, boundaries lose meaning and I fall even harder. What will it take for me to find the courage to tell him my true feelings? ~Hayden

This 26k omegaverse story is a standalone about two alphas finding love in the midst of loss. It’s filled with best friends becoming lovers, only one bed, adopted family, and more pining than a Christmas tree farm. Love’s Unexpected Gift contains knotty fun and therefore is intended for those 18 and older.

Toby Wise is a stay at home parent who hails from a tiny town in Wisconsin. Contrary to popular Wisconsin stereotypes, he’s not a cheese-head who loves football but rather an introvert who spends all his time on the internet, drinking coffee, spending time with his kid, and cooing about his adorable cat, Pikachu.

In April of 2019, A Collection of Strays was born after the world of fanfiction drew him back into his love of writing. Now he’s writing all things omegaverse as long as it includes silly moments and found family.

Aww! This started out so sad but had the happiest HEA ever. I enjoyed Hayden and Matt's journey of becoming adopted parents to their goddaughter. It gave them the push they needed, with the help of a certain omega, to finally admit their feelings for each other. And boy was it hot! A wonderful, quick story.

A cute friends to lovers omegaverse story. I LOVED the alpha/alpha pairing, we don’t usually get to see it and it was nice to get to see something new. I’ve also never seen a story with an alphas “rut” without an omegas heat and I liked that twist to the traditional omega story. There was definitely some angst in the beginning, but I’d still be more likely to call this story adorable. And sexy. There was definitely some heat in this one! I can’t wait to read other stories by this author and I will forever be hoping for Noah’s story!

Matt & Hayden have secretly loved each other for years. Tragedy strikes their friends and now Matt & Hayden have been asked to raise their friends’ daughter, Emma.

The story was pretty good but, I wasn’t a huge fan of the present tense storytelling and the fact that Emma was young enough to bounce back after her parents died but also old enough that she should have at least ASKED about her deceased dads. Not one mention was made of how Emma coped with her loss. She was just happy to be with her Uncle Matt and Uncle Hayhay.

    voluntary review of arc
Love’s Unexpected Gift by author Toby Wise I loved this Omegaverse story. Best friends finding love is always the best kind of story I think. This book is written in dual POV.
Matt and Hayden’s best friends have died in a car crash. They have left Matt and Hayden guardian to their little girl.
Matt has always been the dad of their group of friends. He has always had a thing for his best friend Hayden as well.
Hayden when they move in together and start parenting together it becomes harder to hide how he really feels about Matt. They have been best friends for years, but now do they have the chance to be more?
I loved the angst, the love, and the emotional pull of this story. Well worth the read. I would pick up more from this author in the future, I wanna see what happens next.

I found it a pleasure to read this delightful, enjoyable MM romance. This plot is well-written & intriguing, making sure that the reader’s attention is firmly kept. The characters are well-developed & portray realistic & believable emotional feelings & reactions while continuing to develop throughout the story-line to become emotional strong individuals who love each other. There is good support from the secondary characters.
There is: two male alphas (Hayden & Matt) become guardians to their deceased friends (Jeff & Tristan) little daughter (Emma) & secretly have been attracted to each other then the situation changes, a caring friend (Noah), some twists, drama, tragedy, memories, heartache, attractions, longings, complications, playfulness, advice, misunderstandings, heat issues, surprises, anticipation, decisions, determination, misunderstandings, admittance, declaration, love, some steam, surprises, contentment, love, some steam & a wonderful epilogue with a few surprises.

Hayden and Matt are left behind to care for their goddaughter when her parents are killed. Both men are alphas, but have been friends for most of their lives and both are in love with the other. A story that is sweet, but full of angst, misunderstandings and sexual tension. There is a thread of grief that is interwoven throughout the story that pulls at your heartstrings even when you get to the HEA. The author pulls the reader in and makes you feel the grief at the loss of their friends and the pain the MCs feel when there are misunderstandings in their relationship. The little girl is sweet and smart and very likable. Good story.

If you like Omegaverse, roommates to lovers, or best friends to lovers, or unique pairings, then you will enjoy this book. A story of two Alphas finding the courage to take the leap from friends to lovers. After the lose of their friends in an accident and becoming guardians of their daughter, Hayden and Matt, best friends and roommates, become a family of three overnight. Already close and having secret feelings for one another, and with the new situation they find themselves in, they draw closer together, falling even further. Helping with Rut, boundaries blur even further, feelings grow stronger. Family and friends supporting them as mates and a family. But what is a story without a little bit of misunderstanding and possible heartache before their happily ever after. I always like unique pairings and that is why I picked up this new to me author. I liked it enough that I plan to look up more. Would I recommend this book? Yes.

It's ok for a short read. Two alpha friends who can't communicate to save their lives. A three year old who talks like a six year old. Very cute and sweet.
