Like You Hate Me (Hawthorne University Book 1) Kindle Edition
I’ve never hated anyone as much as I hate him.
The day my sister died, I told her best friend I never wanted to see him again, and I meant it.
I lost her because of him. Everything I used to care about means nothing now because of him.
It’s all because of him.
So when he shows up on my driveway two years later and tells me he’s moving in with me for his freshman year of college, I kick his ass and tell him to disappear. For good this time.
But I already know the defiant little brat’s not gonna listen. He never does.
Being near him again makes me crazy. I’m supposed to be the college basketball star my father raised me to be, but now I’m focused on a new game. I’m obsessed with watching him, touching him, breaking him. His body, his head, his heart, anything I can get my hands on…
I’m gonna take it all until he’s got nothing left.
And even though he knows exactly what I’m doing to him, he’s gonna let me do it anyway.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2025Oof! Xavi and Nate have some issues! When Nate’s sister Katy dies, he blames her bff, Xavi. And Xavi feels like he deserves Nate’s anger because he also blames himself. When they end living in the same house, Nate decides he is going to basically torture Xavi by using Xavi’s crush on Nate against him.
It works pretty well since Xavi not only can’t help himself where Nate is concerned, he also truly feels he deserves it. But Nate’s plan backfires a bit because underneath his anger at Xavi is the mutual attraction he’s always felt and tried to deny.
This is a very toxic relationship for most of the book. Nate tries very hard to only have hate s*x with Xavi and not get attached. But he’s been attached all along so it doesn’t work out the way he expects. And Xavi lets himself be used while maintaining a wild hope that Nate will love him in the end—even though he’s not sure he deserves to be happy.
I love that Xavi is trying to do all the things on Katy’s bucket list for her since she can’t. It shows how much he misses her and how loyal he is.
I really loved Carter and Frankie and Easton, Nate’s friends and other roommates. I hope there is a HEA in Carter’s future. All three friends were great friends and allies, but Carter went above and beyond.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2025I'm a sucker for love that hurts. I want all the pining. I want twisted and aching. I want tears. I want a bit of hate. And then I want forgiveness that feels earned. That's what you get with Like You Hate Me.
When it comes to the characters, they are all (including side characters) so beautifully rich. We feel for all of them - especially our MMCs. They have a story, they have a place in this world Winters has built. They all feel real and tangible and worth getting to know. I'm obsessed with the way Winters writes pain and longing among this rag tag group.
This was my first Bethany Winters novel but it will most definitely not be my last. This is world and character building that is begging for additional books. Suffice it to say, I'll be patiently waiting on our next installment.
For now, read Like You Hate Me. Even if you need to hate how much you love it.

I liked this book because it was gripping, and I basically read it through without stopping, so that obviously means it's good. But, I felt a realism to the story that made it very depressing and upsetting. I think in fiction, suspenseful/dramatic romances, you get the HEA as well as something epic. So this type of read would normally have some big revelation. like--Xavi endured some huge misunderstanding tragedies that Nate didn't realize, and when Nate finds out, he sees his hate for no reason. And that his hate made him the bad guy instead of Xavi. (There are some secrets revealed, but they weren't game changers)--Now some people may say in real life things aren't that black and white and Xavi was innocent to a degree. He didn't actually kill Nate's sister. He also doesn't deserve the hate regardless. And Nate's hate was actually a fine line of his love and infatuation, too. But, the ending, the secrets revealed, etc...all seemed a little more realistic and upsetting than I had hoped. I mean, it was clear Xavi was addicted and had a shady past...so I found it strange without some major climax, Nate just went from hate to love because Nate's reasons for his hate never changed. Now sure in real life people can forgive and move on and grow, but that has a depressing element....knowing Xavi had such a weird relationship with his dealer is kind of like reading a book where the MC actually cheated in the past but both characters moved on. I really wanted Xavi to have some big reason why he wasn't into drugs or doing shady things... to give this big, fake happy ending. Because that would have been a twist but also sweeter when Nate realized this. And the secrets that the dealer was using blackmail weren't that clear and weren't the only reason Xavi went to him so much, so again... It's not the game changer I wanted.
My rambling review may not be making sense here, but I just wanted to point out for those hoping there is some huge twist ending and epic love tale, I didn't see it, in my opinion. I saw two guys hurting terribly who like each other, and eventually, one forgives the other enough to try to at least have each other instead of hate... but that's it. All the pain and past are still there. And it's kind of a 180 when Nate goes from hate to love, with little reason.
I just kept waiting for some major twist or secret to make this an epic love story and not so depressing, but there wasn't one...
All in all, though, they do end up together, so it could be worse.

What an emotional rollercoaster full of angst, tension, and sizzling chemistry this book was. Xavi and Nate have a complicated, messy history. Xavi was best friends with Nate’s little sister, Katy, and ever since her tragic death, Nate has blamed Xavi. Both of them are struggling to live with the loss, barely holding themselves together.
When Xavi moves in with Nate and his college roommates, things get...intense. Nate’s resentment clashes with their undeniable attraction, leading to some seriously steamy hate sex that’s off-the-charts hot. The possessiveness between them? Crazy hot. But it’s not just about the heat—the story dives into their pain, their past, and the secrets that come to light. The flashbacks are perfectly placed, adding depth to their story and peeling back the layers of their complicated connection.
I also loved the roommates—they brought some much-needed lightness and warmth to the story. Now I’m anxiously awaiting Easton’s story because I’m already hooked on this group.

I felt the story was trying too hard. Yes, there was background and context for he hate but I felt there was so much explanation and details that it became excessive instead of believable. 🤷🏻♀️

5.0 out of 5 stars Hate to love you!
When I first found this book, I immediately wanted to read it and then kept putting it off for some unknown reason. I'm so happy I ended up picking it up though, because I was invested from the start. Both Nate and Xavi have very complicated feelings towards each other and all that has to do with Katy. I believe those feelings were already complicated before Katy's death but that only made things so much worse. If it hadn't been for all those flashbacks and the fact that Nate seemed to have an interest in Xavi from the beginning, I might have found the ending too sudden. But I ended up absolutely loving it.
I'm not usually a fan of degradation and of using and discarding another person (bad Nate). But that other side of Nate, the possessiveness and jealousy. Yes, I was definitely for that. I did hate that Xavi let himself be used again, like he had in the past. And I hated all those previous guys so much! But at least this time it ended differently and I'm happy with how it all turned out. There were moments I was confused about why something happened or someone let something happen, but the flashbacks ended up making it all clear. The roommates annoyed me at times, some of their actions made me want to hit them, but I ended up loving them and wouldn't mind for them to have their own stories eventually.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 STAR READ! Just Perfection.
Bethany Winters is a new author for me although I have seen her name and in particular this book all over bookstagram it sat on my tbr for a while - what was I thinking????? am I ok????? I’m a sucker for an enemies to lovers trope and goddddd was it giving.
How the story got started instantly invested me and I was feeling all the feels before the book even got going, this book delivers some of the most heartbreaking themes throughout and it’s just written so beautifully well. I really can’t fault the plot, i really loved everything about the story and how it all blended together. It was emotional, raw and really quite touching.
My beautiful broken boys, Xavi & Nate were just everything. Xavi made me want to protect him at all costs, the pain, the hurt, the deep and dark sadness he was experiencing made me feel broken for him. Nate’s anger and rage towards Xavi was so palpable you could feel it allllll. Years of anger towards someone he believed he hated and blamed for all the pain and loss they both went through, both equally suffering in their own ways.
Their chemistry and passion was explosive, many moments I had to take a minute and enjoy their spicy & chaotic scenes. Nate’s dominating and hard exterior and how he took charge over our beautifully submissive Xavi was fireeeeeee. Nate’s mouth had me & Xavi both drooling, I was obsessed with them both together 🫦
I love love loved them together and their push/pull dynamic was insane to read. I also want to mention side characters because wow, sometimes we don’t give enough credit and recognition to them but Carter, Easton and Frankie were amazing! Their characters individually so different but had such interesting personalities and gave a really good feel for their friendship group, once again all with their own troubles and trauma. Carter was especially a favourite of mine, that cheeky, mischievous and troublesome vibe I would really love to see him get his own story one day. Nate & him had a really fascinating relationship that they depended on each other, being previously lovers but still keeping a solid ‘friendship’ made for such great reading. Urgh I couldn’t get enough of any of them, I want more of them alllllll.
Overall this book was captivating and just simply gorgeous. I can’t fault it and will want to buy it in every format to be honest - I need a paperback instantly because I want to highlight the hell outta it. 5 STAR READ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
