Lady Estrid: A Novel of Eleventh Century Denmark (The Earls of Mercia Side Stories Book 4) Kindle Edition
From author M J Porter, comes a novel of the most influential woman in eleventh-century Denmark, Lady Estrid.
Daughter, Sister, Duchess, Aunt. Queen.
United by blood and marriage. Divided by seas. Torn apart by ambition. Lady Estrid Sweinsdottir has returned from Kiev, her first husband dead after only a few months of marriage. Her future will be decided by her father, King Swein of Denmark, or will it?
A member of the ruling House of Gorm, Estrid might not be eligible to rule, as her older two brothers, but her worth is in more than her ability to marry and provide heirs for a husband, for her loyalty is beyond question.
With a family as divided and powerful as hers, stretching from England to Norway to the land of the Svear, she must do all she can to ensure Denmark remains under the control of her father’s descendants, no matter the raging seas and boiling ambition that threatens to imperil all.

About the author

I'm an author of historical fiction (Early English/Saxon, Vikings and the British Isles as a whole before the Norman Conquest, as well as three 20th-century mysteries) and fantasy (now published under a different name). I've also written my first nonfiction book, The Royal Women Who Made England: The Women of the Tenth Century, which is available now.
I was born in the old Mercian kingdom at some point since 1066. Raised in the shadow of a strange little building, told from a very young age that it housed the bones of long-dead kings of Mercia and that our garden was littered with old pieces of pottery from a long-ago battle, it's little wonder that my curiosity in Early England ran riot. I can only blame my parents!
I like to write. You've been warned!
Not sure where to start your journey through Saxon/Early England?
If you're new to Saxon England, then Son of Mercia, book 1 in Eagle of Mercia Chronicles, is perhaps where you should start. And then follow on with Wolf of Mercia and Warrior of Mercia and the continuing books in the series.
King of Kings, book 1 in The Brunanburh Series, is the story of the build-up to the greatest battle on British soil you've probably never heard about, Brunanburh. 'An epic story of kingsmanship that will set in motion the pivotal, bloody Battle of Brunanburh where allies have to be chosen wisely.' The continuing series takes readers to Brunanburh and beyond.
And, coming in April 2025, Men of Iron, the first book in The Dark Age Chronicles. This trilogy will take my readers back to the very beginnings of Saxon England before the creation of Mercia and the other kingdoms.
If you like action adventure with a heavy dose of violence, foul language, and good old camaraderie - The Mercian Ninth Century series is for you, starting with The Last King (there are also Cleaner versions where much of the foul language has been removed - they can be a little harder to find but they are available). Fans of The Eagle of Mercia Chronicles will also find a familiar face. Or The Seventh Century, starting with Pagan Warrior, has a little more politics to go with the set-piece battles.
If you like stories about the forgotten women of history, then the Tenth Century series, starting with The Lady of Mercia's Daughter, is a good place to begin, the story of Lady Ælfwynn after the death of her mother. Or, The First Queen of England, with a little more romance.
If you're interested in the last century of Early England (before 1066) then The Earls of Mercia series is for you.
If you want to read it all, then you can read in chronological order or mix it up. The series weren't written in chronological order (I have a tendency to move backwards through time).
If you're as interested in the ancient kingdom of Mercia as I am, then the loosely connected, The Tales of Mercia is for you. The individual series can be read in this order but can be read in any order. I started my historical fiction writing journey with The Earls of Mercia, so yes, I began at the end.
1) The Dark Age Chronicles starting with Men of Iron, coming April 2025
2) Gods and Kings starting with Pagan Warrior.
3) The Eagle of Mercia Chronicles starting with Son of Mercia.
4) The Ninth Century books starting with The Last King
5) A detour to The Lady of Mercia's Daughter and A Conspiracy of Kings, from the Tenth Century series
6) The Earls of Mercia series starts with The Earl of Mercia's Father.
If you're interested in my 20th-century mysteries, then The Custard Corpses and The Automobile Assassination are the books for you. The Secret Sauce is coming soon. And Cragside, a standalone 1930s murder mystery set at the beautiful North Northumberland estate, and inspired by my Lockdown walks around the property.
My first non fiction book, The Royal Women Who Made England, is now published by Pen and Sword in hardback and ebook, detailing the information I used to write The Tenth Century series featuring Ælfwynn, Eadgifu and the daughters of Edward the Elder.
If you want to keep up to date with my latest writing projects, then please find me on your social media channel of choice, and check out my blog where you will find lots of information about my books..
Happy reading:)

- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2021I enjoyed this book and I recommend. Author does a great job understanding the character's mind, thoughts, and reasoning. The critism is that I have to create on my own what they look like, as well as how they age. The chapter's have the year of date, but, in mid chapter for example, time will pass and I found myself looking back many times to check. I also had to check the passage of time to compare what age a character might be at the time. A few more details are required to really get really immersed into the character. The story is great, the setting is good as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2020Lady Estrid, is the daughter of the King of Denmark in the 11th Century where you have the King of England not only fighting to keep England from Denmark you have them being invaded by the Vikings. Estrid tells the story of her life as daughter of the King of Denmark, her brothers who want to rule and all the others. At the beginning M.J.Porter tries to give you a sense of who some of these characters are,but they're so many but as you read, don't give up,they will all start to make sense on who is who. The story is told by Lady Estrid 's letters which I liked, it made me see what was going on better. Follow Lady Estrid's life as it unfolds before you and what happened in this time in history of Denmark,Norway,Sweden and England. This is a very well laid out historical fiction story has all you need to see what happens when you have greed, love hate and what you will go through to rule a country. If your not familiar with this time in history, you will be when you finish. I am fortunate enough to know some of this history so it made sense to me,some of it but not of Denmark 's history but England's history in this period. It's a very well written story of Lady Estrid's life and what happens through her eyes and letters. If you enjoy history and stories of the characters that played a part of these countries history, you will find this book not only entertaining but you will learn history in the 11th Century.. Received from Net Gallery.. This is a must read it you are interested in history ,if not,you will still find the story enchanting of a woman that wanted to rule but was not allowed!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2022I usually really like this authors books but just couldn't get into this one. I applaud the author for the attempt to bring life to Estrid as there is little known about her. However, the structure of this book made it very difficult to keep invested in it. The story constantly jumps timelines and events, which one would deem important, would just have a quick "oh by the way" mention. Just not for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2020This is a non spoiler review, because you as reader need to read this book. Also, I feel sometimes I have in the past gave away to much of the plot line. This has diminished the pleasure for would be readers.
Lady Estrid: A Novel of Eleventh Century Denmark
by M.J. Porter
The eleventh century Denmark lady Estrid of the house of Grom husband is dead only after a few months, her future lies in the hands of her father and King Svend of Denmark or maybe some one else’s.
MJ Porter brings intimate fictional life of one of the most intriguing female characters in history. Estrid was the only child of King Svend & his second wife. Her extensive family’s ties that include half brothers and sisters make up an expansive far reaching relatives.
In this compelling historical fiction, we are given an intimate glimpse into what Lady Estrid’s life might have been like. The author presents political drama through first hand accounts, thoughts and letters. I really appreciated the way the author gives the reader first hand knowledge of what lady Estrid courtly life might have been like.
Estrid in this novel is gifted with a intuitive foreshadowing dream of what is to come. Some of it is easy for her to decipher, while others parts are harder to interpret.
Soon things fall into place as she travel from one country to the next.
She becomes a political pawn in a chess game in her half brothers turbulent courts
While Harald ruling her native country of Denmark and Cnut ruling England. Each will try to use her for their own political gains. Cnut will marry her to one of his closest allies while in England, Jarl Ulfr is an overly ambitious.
When the harsh reality of a foreseen death comes to take away one. Her world will pivot and she will return to her native Denmark with her husband and son.
I was hooked from the beginning this in-depth historical fictional tale of strong willed heroine. During a time when daughters shoulder the brunt of mariage alliances, Lady Estrid knows she will be married to whom ever her father or brothers decide. She voices her opinions quite boldly but understands her place on the ever changing kingship game of alliances. She strong willed and formidable, realistic in her outlook.
This was an exceptional written book. The author has created well developed three dimensional characters, and the cast along with their names was easy to follow along. I enjoyed the incredible atmosphere details of the different places and people within this paced perfect storyline.
The characterizations of place and time along with the characters themselves were absolutely wonderful and so vividly descriptive, placing me easily into the heart of this novel.
Quotes:
I hate this time of the year – the dark times. My true dream stock me more often, or hints and illusions, awkward to decipher, and impossible to ignore.
A compelling novel of heartache and loss Lady Estrid: A Novel of Eleventh Century Denmark by M.J. Porter
“United by blood and marriage.
Dived by seas.
Torn apart by ambition”
I am definitely going to recommend this book to my family and friends who enjoy medieval historical courtly drama.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2020This is an excellent work. Estrid was the daughter, sister and mother of kings, who lived a life in history. Her life encompasses 11th century Denmark and England. Reading about her makes the time so much more understandable. The work uses correspondence to make the many different twists and turns of her life more easily understandable . I was very glad to read this work and get to know a remarkable women. I was lucky to receive a free copy via the History Quill Book Club.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was quite disappointed in this novel. I found its structure confusing and clumsy. It happened many times that within a chapter, I had the feeling a paragraph was missing as events were suddenly referred to as if the reader had already been told about them. No fluid style of writing. I kept on reading because I was keen to learn about historical events of that time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating book on the rulers of England and Denmark after king Swein
This book is written in part by letters between lady Estrid and her royal relatives. Well worth a read, if you want to understand the royal houses in the 11th century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant story well told
I've been reading books by MJ Porter for many years because I love the storylines which are mainly based on historical fact. Less well known is the role women played in Anglo Saxon England - they are sometimes (but not always) mentioned by name but this author brings those names forward, placing them into the stories of others who are better recorded but in such a believeable way. Lady Estrid is one such case. She was the trusted sister of Cnut (see other MJ Porter books for his story) and because she did such a good job there, keeping Denmank safe for long periods of time, Cnut was able to rule England. Yet she is very little known and that is a great shame as this story shows that it is likely that she had an amazing life. Estrid is certainly someone that I would have liked to have met. If this is your first MJ Porter book, I urge you to try others from the Earls of Mercia series which leads up to events covered in this book as this will help to give a background to the people and events mentioned. I know more books are on the way and I can't wait to read them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
As I expected, a great book without a doubt. To understand what the ladies of that era went through and how they lived amongst the strongest of men, is amazing they're true warriors themselves, plenty of plots and twist, and historical events.
