Purchase options and add-ons
April needs somewhere to live - and peace and quiet to heal her wounds. The tenants of Hummingbird House have other ideas.
When April moves into Hummingbird House, she is intrigued by her mysterious landlord, Dai.
With a bruised heart and a distinct lack of furniture, she spends the summer getting to know the other occupants. As she smartens up her home and makes peace with her recent past, she befriends Paul, a solitary ex-chef, and Betty, an elderly lady who lives in the basement flat.
But Hummingbird House holds many secrets, and the relationships of the tenants are not as straightforward as they seem. April learns some shocking truths one eventful night and realises that victims and villains can look the same.
The Landlord of Hummingbird House explores unlikely friendships, unexpected love interests, and family relationships. Here, everyone is in need of a second chance - and appearances can be deceptive.

About the author

“Harvey’s writing is descriptive as opposed to prescriptive, capturing people in all their simplicity and depth without being moralising...” Independent Book Review.
Jane Harvey is a pen name. ‘Jane’ crafts fun fiction for the thinking woman, where she enjoys exploring unexpected friendships and writing happy endings. In 'real life', her (prize-winning) fiction is a little bleaker.
She was born and raised on the beautiful island of Jersey, CI, and lives with two males and a dog.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021Great book! Highly recommended!
Jump to the wrong conclusion based on first impressions? Let your past control your life? Despite a “tell all” social-media society, hide your deepest feelings and struggle to connect? If this sounds familiar, you will find this novel an engaging and delightful exploration of people seeking and finding connections in our modern world.
I will admit, the title of this cozy novel drew me in, and the work is quintessentially English: a “named” building separated into flats, and the use of UK colloquialisms such as “serviettes,” a “basket for pin money,” “A-levels,” calling guys “blokes,” and the popular entreaty to stop by for a “cuppa,” all connect the reader with its characters’ contemporary British lifestyle. The core of the story explores people thrust into a shared space, each with a hidden past and personal difficulties to overcome. The main protagonist April, emotionally scarred and seeking, jumps to conclusions about other tenants, and the novel follows her as she lets her heart heal and opens her eyes to her own misunderstandings. The theme of the book is captured by this quote: “There are always second chances in love, passion and beauty.”
Harvey has a knack for a descriptive turn of phrase with a bit of Romance: “She was a kaleidoscopic talker: colourful, fast, almost unbelievable in her tales;” “English Literature degree has given you rather unrealistic ideas of modern men” and “…storming up and down staircases and looking beautiful with a heart full of angst.”
Only Hummingbirds mate for life… this book makes you believe! Harvey has crafted wonderful contemporary women’s fiction, well worth reading and highly recommended.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2021Lives intersect and intertwine at The Hummingbird House. An enjoyable story that shows the tenants in real life situations that can either cripple or give a reason to overcome. I have read/reviewed for this author before and received an advanced copy of this work. I liked the book for its straight forward look into the lives of ordinary people all thrown together by necessity.
-To The Author- I find your Fictional work just as appealing as your others.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2024This was a fun book to read. I could not wait to get back to it. It did leave me with some unresolved questions! Maybe a hook to follow the series! I recommend this book if looking for a light and engaging read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2023Jane Harvey writes an excellent psychological study of human nature and personalities while twisting it all into an intriguing, cozy mystery. Page after page, our author introduces the reader to the unusual neighbors who share flats in Hummingbird House, leaving us guessing what happened in each tenant's past. First impressions may not always be the best ones. Five stars plus in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well-written and thoughtful book.
If you feel in need of a pick-me-up then read this book. It’s like having a chat with a good friend or relaxing retreat away from the demands of the daily grind. It soothes and restores with vivid descriptions and quirky, likeable characters who are all starting over in some way or another. I loved the domesticity detail, the descriptions of Hummingbird House and the underlying thread that drives the plot - what's the deal with the moody, good looking landlord? A well-written and thoughtful book. Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good characters and story
The "Landlord of Hummingbird House" seems to be your typical romcom. But then instead of picking up speed and sliding into the well known patterns of romance novels the story concentrades on the coulorful bunch of likable characters. I really enjoyed the depth of this story. Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Agonies, joys . . . and surprises
I did not see most of this coming.
This completely charming novel manages to cleverly mix the agonies and joys of life with very everyday activities. Sipping tea with your boarding house mates. Bumping into people on the stairwell. Chatting with one's sister, playing with one's niece, picking up some veg from the neighbour.
Amid all of these moments, everyone is hurting — one denizen of Hummingbird House in particular.
As the story builds to its dramatic climax, the reader realizes how deftly the author has seeded the pages with gentle clues. And how much one really cares about how all of this turns out.
There is a love story, in the traditional sense, although who is involved may surprise you; but there are many love stories tucked inside these pages, touching and real.
And "who" is the landlord of Hummingbird House?
Wouldn't you like to know.
What a lovely read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely story.
Loved this book! Very realistic and heartwarming with some unexpected little surprises. It was my end of the day book to read because it was always something to look forward to before bed - Except on this rainy Sunday afternoon, I picked it up and couldn't put it down until I finished. :-)
Lovely.
I'll definitely read more of Jane Harvey when it comes out.
