Language Motivation: Tips and inspirations for language learning Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 1 rating

Learning a foreign language can be a challenging endeavor, especially for those who are not able to put themselves in an environment using that language on a daily basis.

There are countless resources available for non-native learners of a variety of languages, including books, blogs, YouTube videos, and mobile applications. While such resources can help an eager student increase his or her proficiency in a variety of areas, one important topic is often overlooked: How does one maintain motivation long enough to become fluent in a foreign language?

“Language Motivation: Tips and inspirations for language learners” is focused on that very question. In this book J.D. Wisgo, long-time language learner, teacher, and translator, touches upon over twenty ideas meant to change how you think about language learning and to keep you motivated on your road to fluency. Topics include the dangers of standardized tests and “gamified” learning techniques, measuring your improvement, and the importance of satisfaction and humility in language learning.

Written for learners of any language, this book is a must-have for those looking to improve the efficiency and enjoyment of their language learning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Friendly advice on how to stay motivated
Reviewed in Australia on October 4, 2021
J.D. Wisgo’s book, Language Motivation, is a reassuring read for those who like myself are attempting to learn a second language later in life.

You may not find any new groundbreaking information here but what is communicated is the possibility for anyone with the right motivation and approach to learn another language at any time.

The book is the perfect antidote to the online hubris displayed by some learners who boast about their language success. In this respect J.D. Wisgo emphases enjoyment and the satisfaction of learning over the race to meet some goal.

The relaxed tone of his writing is like having an experienced teacher at your elbow, giving advice on language learning by building on small successes including tips on how to sustain interest through the dry patches.

Although this book could be easily read in one day, I’m certain I’ll return to it regularly to encourage me along the way in my language learning journey.
