How did the masters of art imagine King David and his last concubine, Abishag?

This collection brings her to life and conjures the rivalry between his sons, their bitter revolts against him, and the final transition of power to his chosen heir, ensuring his lasting legacy.

These amazing sculptures, paintings, etchings, and manuscripts inspired the author to write The David Chronicles, an epic historical fiction trilogy with a modern twist. Besides being an artist and an architect, she taught art history and curated this collection to analyze the contrasts between various artistic viewpoints.

This collection is arranged not by artist, nor by artistic style or era, but rather moment-by-moment following the biblical story, as featured by Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Chagall, Picasso, and Jan Steen to name but a few.

★★★★★ "Poznansky's selection of master-artist renditions spans centuries and cultures. Doing so lets readers appreciate the David story's contribution to the aesthetic history of Western culture."

How did the masters of art depict these subjects? The epic battle of David and Goliath: a moment by moment account. The victory celebration, Michal’s love, Saul’s jealousy, and David’s narrow escape from his assassins. The decline of the House of Saul, losing his last battle against the Philistines, and David’s rise to the throne. The most torrid love affair ever told: David’s forbidden love affair with Bathsheba, his attempt to cover it up, and the regrets that would haunt him for the rest of his life. Trouble in David’s house: Amnon attacks his half-sister Tamar, the assassination of Amnon at the hands of her brother, Absalom, and Absalom’s revolt against the king. Abishag brought in to serve as David’s last concubine, the rivalry between his sons, their revolts against him, and handing power to his chosen heir, Solomon, ensuring a lasting legacy.

Editorial Reviews

Review

  • "The art is arranged not by artist but instead by events regarding the life of David. It is a majestic, learned, beautifully designed book that carries a lot of instruction, entertainment, as well as visual pleasure. But then that is what Uvi is all about!" - Grady Harp, Hall of Fame Reviewer, Vine Voice
  • "From wood engravings to the splash of red in a modern painting, the life of King David has inspired art through the centuries; and the art of King David has inspired Uvi Poznansky's very human depiction of the aging monarch looking back on his days. In this art collection, David is old, seeking to rediscover his youth in the bodies of ever younger brides. The choice of an heir is much on his mind of course, and the beautiful bride might have much to say in his ear. Then comes the never-peaceful transfer of power." - Sheila Deeth, Top Amazon Reviewer, Vine Voice
  • "The Last Concubine is the latest of Uvi Poznansky's Inspired by Art books. Like the others, it delights and instructs. Poznansky's selection of master-artist renditions spans centuries and cultures. Doing so lets readers appreciate the David story's contribution to the aesthetic history of Western culture. Buy it, Buy all of the Inspired by Art books. Read them in tandem with the David Chronicles." - Dan Strawn, Author
  • "This is a wonderful collection of art compiled by Uvi Poznansky that artists have given us throughout the centuries. It is a beautifully designed book that will provide a lot of visual pleasure. I'm a big fan of Uvi Poznansky so it's five stars from me again." - Piaras, Vine Voice

Uvi Poznansky dons another Technicolor coat in this latest series of books, always raising the bar for her high standard previous achievements. Originally from Israel where she studied Architecture and Town Planning then moving to the US where she studied Computer Science and became an expert in Software Engineering, Poznansky managed to combine the design elements of two studies into unique formats. And she has accomplished the same with the other side of her brain - making visual her ideas (she is an accomplished painter, drawer, and sculptor who has enjoyed exhibitions both in Israel and in California, her present base) and making words in poetry and in short stories and children's books.

Uvi’s 9th volume in her inspired by art The David Chronicles is titled THE LAST CONCUBINE. For those less familiar with the story of David this book about Abishag some recapping of her part with David may help: Abishag was a young woman of Shunem, distinguished for her beauty. She was chosen to be a helper and servant to David in his old age. Among Abishag's duties was to lie next to David and keep him warm; however, David did not have sexual relations with her. The Hebrews...believed that the fertility of the soil and the general prosperity of the people were bound up with the fertility of the king. David by this time was old and decrepit and his sexual vigor is called into question. Attempts are made to remedy the situation. The first cure is to heap clothes upon his bed in order to secure such physical heat as might render him capable. When this fails a search is made for the most beautiful woman in the land. Great emphasis is placed upon her Abishag's charms. The fact that the king did not have intercourse with her is decisive in the story. If David was impotent he could no longer be king. After David's death Adonijah (David's fourth and eldest surviving son), persuaded Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, to entreat the king to permit him to marry Abishag. Solomon suspected in this request an aspiration to the throne, and therefore caused Adonijah to be put to death Some scholars point to the possibility that Abishag is the female protagonist in the Song of Songs.

Uvi has published an absorbing book series – The David Chronicles – and now is curating art collections to enhance the pleasure of her books’ stories. This volume is one of the most complete collections of art from ancient through renaissance to contemporary in drawings, paintings, sculptures, etchings – works by Gustave Doré, Schwebel, Pedro Américo, Frederick Goodall, Govert Flinck, Chagall, Nicolaes Antoni Flinck, Ferdinand Bol, Jan Lyken, Michiel vander Borch, Luca Giordano, Valentine de Boulogne, Henri Lindegaar, Michelangelo, Gustave Moreau, James Tissot, Aert de Gelder, Ernst Fuchs, William Blake, Michael Jessing, Salvador Dali, Moshe Tzi Berger, Leonhard, Roberta Weir, Hans Sebald Beham, Edward Hull, William de Morgan, Mandy Sand, engravings, church windows, illustrations unnamed, coins, stamps and more - some well known, others – discoveries.

The art is arranged not by artist but instead by events regarding the life of David. It is a majestic, learned, beautifully designed book that carries a lot of instruction, entertainment, as well as visual pleasure. But then that is what Uvi is all about! Grady Harp, April 17

The David Chronicles is a series of short books that tell the story of King David from his fight with the giant Goliath to his old age where he is warmed by the concubine, Abishag. It is told through the medium of art: paintings, sculpture, etchings, coins, stamps and other works. There are poems and Bible verses to accompany each artwork and they are selected in the order that tells the particular story.
I've started with the ending book, Inspired by Art: The Last Concubine which tells the story of Abishag, a beauty selected to sleep with David in his old age. There is nothing sexual going on, just an attempt to figuratively validate the king's potency as ruler of ancient Israel. The author has selected an interesting collection of art from the masters to much lesser known works. It is an interesting (and new to me) way to tell a story like this in book form.
My only quibble is that I wished there had been a blurb that gave a short version of the story for those not familiar with this part of King David's life. I understand that these are companion books to the author's historical novels, so readers of those books would have been more knowledgeable. I found this an interesting new way to tell an old story.

So many different styles of art grace these pages, colorful, black and white, evocative, dark, strange, haunting… for this reader, the most striking is Henri Lidegaar’s Judgement of Solomon; the most beautiful might be James Tissot’s David Singing; and the most haunting is Salvador Dali’s Psalm 3, closely followed on the page and in my mind by Moshe Tsvi Berger’s Psalm 2. Of course, being English, I love the stained glass too. And my brother who once collected stamps would surely love the author’s curious collection. Artful coins and music complete the scene – a stunning depiction of a life that has influenced the world, and a great introduction to the author’s wonderful words.

Disclosure: It was on a deal and I couldn’t resist it.
