The Last Text Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,304 ratings

Happy Birthday, Daniel. I was told not to send you another text, but I never was any good at listening. I love and miss you. I always will.

When I lost my partner of eight years, I felt like my world was crashing down around me. In order to feel some relief from the overwhelming emptiness, I’ve found myself sending him texts every year on his birthday, even though I know he will never answer. It makes me feel like there’s a piece of him still alive, at least in my heart.

I’m sorry, you must have the wrong number. I apologize for not responding sooner, but I was at work.

That is, until someone responds to my text. Jace is charming, sweet, and everything I could ever want. But how can I accept someone new in my life when Daniel’s only been gone two years? Even so, Jace starts to consume my world. It feels like I can finally breathe as he helps me understand that my life doesn’t have to revolve around my grief.

Soon, I find myself laughing again as he pulls me away from the hopeless cycle I’ve been caught in, and I love spending time with him, whether it’s playing video games together or discussing our comic book alter egos. But I still need to let go of this guilt and allow Jace to show me that I can love another without replacing what I’ve lost. Jace rewrites my entire world with every word and smile he gives me, and it’s becoming harder to not give in and hand him my heart. Maybe Daniel did respond after all.

The Last Text is a 40k word novella about overcoming loss, finding hope, and friendship that leads to new love.

I absolutely loved this book. I was a little hesitant at first because I was worried there would be a lot of push and pull from Merrick, but that was not the case at all.

Jace was a wonderful character. He was so patient and caring. He really helped Merrick.

I loved the other characters as well. Absolutely hilarious, so Alice Winter’s. I love reading the characters she creates.

This book could have been so depressing and sad, but instead, it was hopeful and inspiring. It had the perfect amount of drama and humor.

Great read. I absolutely love it.

Merrick was drowning in life from the loss of his best friend, his lover and his partner. When Daniel died he took part of Merrick with him.
For three years on Daniel’s birthday he would send a text to his phone. One day it pings back and it changes Merricks life forever. Jace was patient and caring from the start and I loved these guys together.

This was sad, uplifting and a beautiful tale of taking a chance at a new possibility.

This novella is a must read in my eyes, it gave full on emotions from the very start. Merrick lost the love of his life Daniel, so he is dealing with major depression and every emotion you could imagine. He sends a text to Daniel's old number to feel close to him again and gets a response from Jace the new owner of the number. This sets off a slow but steady friendship that both men need. Jace is the light at the end of the tunnel. I love the compassion that was shown dealing with a death loss, my heart broke for Merrick and my heart soared for Jace who is just loving and fun. Watching these two come together brought smiles and laughter that was the perfect balance that was needed. Add in some crazy family members and off the wall pets and you have a truly heartwarming love story. TLT reads fast but without losing any of the content..

I really enjoyed reading about Merrick and Jace. Their text messages made me laugh and I loved his interactions with Jace's grandpa at the wedding. I had put off reading this book figuring it would be a tear jerker but the blurb really made me want to read it, and I'm glad that I finally did. I didn't cry as much as I thought I would. I did a lot more laughing and smiling than I thought I would. So if you are afraid to read it because you think it is a going to require a box of tissues to read it, then don't worry. Only minor sadness is involved, so give the story a chance. I read this book using the Kindle Unlimited program.

The LastText is just what it sets out to be: a straightforward m/m romance. The storyline is simple and all of the story elements and characters pretty much follow the usual simple formula for a romance. As such, it is an enjoyable escapist book that will make readers feel good and be glad they read it.
If the book were trying to be anything more than the escapist romance novel it is, you would still have to admire the storyline and feel pretty comfortable with the characters.
On the other hand, if you were looking for a best seller quality book, you would notice that the character of Jace is far too perfect—perfect hair, perfect body, blue eyes (of course) large equipment for love making, and far too patient and understanding.
You would also notice that there really isn’t too much to the plot. It is a simple telling of the development of a romance from beginning to fulfillment.
And you would also notice that the grief of Merrick for his diseased partner goes on for far too long and far too intensely. To carry grief for two full years is not unusual, but to be obsessed by it is far from the norm. Anyone who has suffered and intense loss (like I have) knows that the pain doesn’t end, but life adjusts, keeping the old love in a revered and special place while filling life with the happiness and joy of a new love.
In the end, that”s how The Last Text does turn out, just as a straightforward escapist romance novel should.

The author gives us a character that has lost his pardner and is lost in a lonely depressing existence. His family circles around him but he is still grieving. He still texts messages to his love never getting an answer until one day he does. Loved the characters and the look at how people handle grief. Loved the book.

A book I've seen popping up every now and then and finally decided to read.
Jace and Merrick was so sweet together and the dialogue was witty and entertaining from their first text.
There is grief, and Merrick's difficulties with moving on along with his family's careful handling of him. But there is also a pair of very cute rats and a nuts Grandfather that was all kinds of amazing.

I enjoyed every moment of reading and while I would have liked it to be longer, giving us a bit more of Merrick's time with Daniel. Maybe a bit more of Jace and knowing when he fell for Merrick, even one chapter from his pov would have been good. I still loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars OMG I LOVED this one!!!

I didn’t know I needed to read this story until I found it. There is something so powerful and profound about grief and the way we relate to others while we are in the middle of it. The hardest time being when someone loses their partner, their other half, way too soon. How do you help them cope and make them realize that it’s ok to want to find love again? That’s it’s ok when they do - or when you do and that your relationship and hearing about it won’t break them?

Merrick was drowning in loneliness but he was surrounded by a family that loved and supported him. Finding Jace, as if by fate when Daniel’s phone number is reassigned to him, is a stroke of luck. These two are sweet and caring and both understand loss. Jace gets through to Merrick and helps him learn that it’s ok. He helps him see that he doesn’t want to replace Daniel or the love that they’d had, he’s more than willing to bring Daniel along with them on the road of life.

Jace is funny, swoon worthy and charming. I’m kind of glad we don’t really get to see Daniel and only get to see him through Merrick’s remembrance of him because then I might have had a harder time with what this was supposed to be about - love for the one left behind after loss.

Thank you for this beautiful story and I will forever love the laughter that was inserted in to such a tough subject. Grab this one now and fall in love!!!

So, the thing with this book is that I discovered it YESTERDAY, I added it to my to read books with some reluctance (because I kind of suffer a little too much with stories starting grieving widowers) and when today I opened my Amazon app I found it was FREE. Destiny?

I've only read a book by Alice (How to vex a vampire) and it was good but not wow! This one is a short novel starred by Marrik, a 29yo who lost his partner 2 years ago and is still grieving him.

Marrik can't get over his loss and is feeling lonlier by day. Even though his family and friends tell him not to, he can't help but sent texts to Daniel's mobile number until one day he gets an answer.

Jace, they new owner of Daniel's old number, starts talking to him via texts and easily gets under his skin, making him laugh and smile again. But guilty at the same time.

When is time to go on with our lives when we lose someone we love? Is it possible to love again without forgetting the one that's not here anymore?

This are difficult questions, and the reason why I don't usually like this stories is because in my opinion most authors don't achieve conveying everything that's going on in these situations.

But to my surprise, this one was a cute and heart-warming story about depression, lost, guilt and love. And Jace is perfect.

Jace is a funny and easygoing guy that understand how hard is losing someone and that tries helping Marrik without overstepping. He's a real gentleman, he's gentle with him, caring and so lovely.

They start being friends, a support; two guys that meet under strange circumstances that end up loving and craving their texts. And you can't help but laugh and cry with them.

It's nicely paced and I found they Marrik's path into a new life was well developed.

And I so loved Jace'd grandpa. He was so hilarious and a big hearted man.

I'm really glad I read this because it was a loving story about unending love. It was beautiful.

This is a lovely story. Poignant, emotional, tender and beautifully written, it centers around Merrick who is struggling to come to terms with the loss of his long term partner. We share his grief, but then follow as he tentatively starts to allow people back into his life, due to Jace, whom he accidently meets.

Jace is a beautifully written character, who brings humour into the story, and stops it from being all about grief, but about accepting loss and moving on.

This was a great read, thoroughly enjoyed it. The epilogue was my favourite part. I don't want to give anything away that would contain spoilers, so I won't say why. But there are rats, I used to have a pet rat, and a dog, which I love, so that made it even better.

Reading this book, you take a journey alongside Merrick and Jace, which is purely a love story first and foremost, not really a story about loss and grief. Oh, and I loved Jace's Grandpa, who's a bit of a rougue. Highly recommended.

I enjoy reading Alice Winters books, and this one was not what I expected. This book 'The Last Text', was refreshing and had a lot of beautiful moments worth cherishing. Especially the beautiful way Jace tells Merrick, “By accepting you into my life, I understand this relationship is not only you and me. When I take your hand, I understand that I am bringing Daniel with us. I’m not planning on replacing him. I’m planning on making you happy and giving you everything you need to do that.” This was such a wonderful moment.

From the blurb, it appeared to be a book with lots of grief and angst but surprisingly it had a lot of humour too. I laughed a lot as I read on. There were moments that pained me to see Merrick grieving for his long-time partner Daniel who died in a car accident two years back and was not able to come to terms with the loss, and the guilt of liking someone else felt like a betrayal to Daniel played havoc with his psyche, but then, I cheered the way the charming, lovable, ever-smiling Jace came into his life via texting and crept his way into Merrick's heart and of course there has to be an happy ending.
Truly a well-written and wonderful book to read.
    My vote: 4.5 stars

This is a short novella that tugs at the heartstrings. There was the right amount of humour to mellow out the darkness, and Jace and Merrick’s interactions were just the right amount of sweet. What a novel meeting, to a delightful ending!

Since this was a novella there was a big skip to the last chapter, but rather than being annoying or feeling unnecessary it brought satisfaction and closure to the way the story began.

Maybe if you are someone who is currently dealing with grief this is not the best book for you, however this bittersweet story is well worth the read.
