- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2018There is an amazing and unique world inside this book, along with some wonderful and mysterious characters. Mystery and intrigue, along with some nice tension. The main characters were all relatable, although I did find myself wanting to know more about the red-haired illusionist! I like that the book lets you sink inside the mind of a character, letting you see the world through their eyes. Will wait for the next part, to see where Le Cirque Navire moves to next!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2018Chele Cooke’s Le Cirque Navire is a bizarrely wonderful mashup of adventure Sci-Fi, supernatural and fantasy set in a circus world that world be full of illusion even in our ordinary world. Read the publisher’s blurb as it gives you a good sense of what’s going on here. I can guarantee that if you like what you read there you will love the actual book. Hadley’s “gift” is portrayed perfectly, her need to protect her brother Lachlan and her brother’s relationship with her is superbly done, and her relationship with Jack - and the ultimate steps Jack takes - definitely draws the reader in. The others in the supporting cast (especially Mr. Hatliffe, who “gives me the willies”) is also perfectly crafted. The only caveat is that there is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end, so beware if you cannot handle them. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2019I recieved an ARC and am voluntarily reviewing it.
This book is definitely different. If you enjoy twists it is a must read. The book is set in the future, where many planets have been settled. On a remote planet, in the outer most part of the coalition controlled space, the small population of Corapolvo sees very little entertainment.
When a ship hitches instead of docks, the people know there will be something the coalition does not approve of offered. But they are in for a treat with Le Cirque Navire. But how many things they see are real and how many are just a trick? What happens when a reading passes a gift to an unsuspecting girl? And what could really be in the drinks? Seeing real animals is rare, but this cirque has a secret that starts to be uncover in sight of the animals.
This has possibilities all over the imagination, and I can't wait to read the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2018I had to keep reminding myself that this circus was on a spaceship which had hitched itself to a planet on the outskirts of a planetary system. That's how well described the circus and its walpurgisnacht-like carnival atmosphere was. Lachlan is a coalition captain, determined to prove himself and in the process run from a mysterious past. He is also out to protect his sister, Hadley. Hadley is a mechanic who dreams of working on the large engines found in the center of their galaxy. Jack Western is so non descript that he is easily forgotten and therein lies his talent. he is in love with the beautiful seer, Annalise, who unfortunately drops dead mysteriously and passes her abilities on. They all have the cirque in common. All for different reasons. And in that, all have the attention of Cole Hatliffe, the ringmaster and owner. And that's not a good thing. There is something not right with this circus. From he red-haired illusionist to the savage menagerie manage to the lemonade...something is odd and different. What is it? Will we find out? In space, des the paranormal exist?
This is an impressive introduction to what is likely to be a trilogy. (ugh) I only say ugh because I truly miss the days of a good stand alone book. Will I read the next one? Offer me it as an ARC and I will.
I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2018I was given this book for free to read and review. There has always been something mystery and slightly wicked about the circus and throw in space travel, illegal landings, magic and night only performances and you get this amazing book. It had me hooked right from the description of the eerie back tattoo and didn't let up until the last haunting words. The characters are all so flawed and yet so real you want to know more about them, and I mean come on who hasn't said in a moment of frustration with their predicament of life's shortcomings "I want to run off with the circus". Well apparently that can be a deadly proposition according to this tale. I loved the descriptions of all th circus has to offer it is a visual feast and the you can almost literally smell th popcorn and cotton candy. The author says she will write more and I certainly hope so, because I ready for more of this nightly wild ride.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2018I don't think I ever read stories about supernatural circus'. I mean, I know they are out there, as rare as they are... they are out there. I just haven't had the pleasure, and Chele's Le Cirque Navire has help rectify that. Filled with dark undertones and mystery, this title is great at setting the right mood for its plot and wrapping the reader around its literary finger.
The characters are well thought out and the world is of mystery, suspense and magic.
This is not a short read! Clocking in just above 400 pages, Le Cirque Navire is intricate and compelling. It sets up an amazing world that will be explored more in future installments.
Did I feel some chapter dragged when it came to descriptions and or conversations or inner monologues, yes. But, for the most part, at least for me, the story was smooth paced and enjoyable.
I willingly and voluntarily read an arc copy of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars An original concept, flawlessly executed
“A circus in space? Hell yeah I want to read that!” was the first thing I thought after reading this book’s blurb.
Not only is the concept original and perfect for both hardcore sci-fi fans and readers looking to get in the genre, it’s also perfectly executed. The circus scenes are all vividly depicted, plunging us into a magical atmosphere, while the underlying plot keeps us turning page after page.
One of my favorite sci-fi books. Can’t wait to read more about Hadley, Lachlan, Jake and Cole in the next book!
