Learning to Breathe: Based on The Falling Series Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 91 ratings

Like the ocean, life is a beautiful force. One that can tear you limb from limb or lavish you in perfect moments.

Michelle Hathaway has it all: a view of the Eiffel Tower from her loft in Paris, a successful career as a fashion photographer, ownership in an up-and-coming art gallery, and jet-setting days filled with excitement. But, even with all that luxury, her life feels aimless.

Over the years, Michelle drifted on the tide of a long distance, on-again off-again relationship with Micah Roberts, a hot bass player in a popular rock band. When he finally asks her to move to Los Angeles to be with him, she risks everything, taking the leap into a new life.

Drowning in the wake of her decisions, she struggles just to breathe as destiny threatens to take everything. As unexpected events devastate her, will Michelle surface from the depths of despair?

Learning to Breathe captured me from the very first scene. Oh heck, it had grabbed me long before that - probably going back to when I first read the author's The Falling of Love. The characters just became so very real to me, and I have loved every spin on every emotional roller coaster with them, through the three books in The Falling series (TFS), and now through Learning to Breathe as well.

I want to insert a bit of a disclaimer here. This is one of the most difficult reviews I have ever written because I am determined to keep it absolutely spoiler free, hopefully even for those who have not yet completed TFS. There are so many things in this book that I would absolutely LOVE to write about, cry about, ponder, scream from the rooftops, but I do not want to spoil one single moment for those yet to read it. As I mentioned, I have followed Ms. Oldham from the beginning, and while I have always loved her writing style, it is lovely to watch her grow as an author, and this book is truly a masterpiece. In her notes at the end of the book, she mentions having put her blood, sweat and tears (oh so many tears) into the three years she spent writing this - and it shows. I have to wonder about the human soul of anyone who reads this and does not find themselves moved....or broken down into a blubbering mess, but I will settle for moved.

Back to the beginning of the book, I am no stranger to long distance romance. My husband I spent almost 4 years in one, and then 5 few years down the road before we finally got married. Marisa has done such a wonderful job of hitting on all of Missy's emotions about being in such a relationship. It is not all pretty, and certainly not easy, but with the right chemistry, trust, communication and dedication, it can be done. I was amazed at some of the feelings she put into words for me that I thought I had forgotten as the years of living together have worn on. I remember the fears, the loneliness between visits and I remember the moment I knew I couldn't continue this way any longer and that it was time to make the 1,000 mile move. While not quite as far as Michelle's move from Paris, it was far enough, and equally life changing.
I also cannot say enough about how much I love the relationship between Michelle and her siblings. This will be showcased throughout the book, but begins in the first few pages as well. It will take on so many forms throughout the course of the book, but the tender moment between Michelle and James, the big brother who raised her, is so touching and sweet. She has the kind of siblings and relationships with them that I always dreamed of, and the scenes are so well written.

Speaking of well written, things quickly become quite steamy for the first time in this book early on, and I will just say that this is definitely not for the under 18 crowd. Ms. Oldham has a talent for bringing you right into the scene, no matter what the scene is. The hotter scenes are quite creative and I love Michelle's spunky attitude about what she thinks of certain things. There is nothing conventional about this couple so it isn't out of character for this to flow into their bedroom. On first read I was beginning to think there were a bit too many of these scenes, but things will change all too soon and we will see that the author had a reason for writing it this way. If you don't care to read graphic parts, don't give up on this book because there is so much more to it.

Again, all of the emotions and adjustments of going from seeing each other a few times a year to living together are spot on. A conversation with Michelle's sister Grace gives her some of those quotes I can't let go: "It’s okay to be afraid of change. It’s just not okay to be so afraid that you let it stop you from reaching for the stars."...“Remember, life is about change. How dull would life be if we never took chances? "....“Don’t start putting up those walls of yours. Let [him] in. He’s trying. You need to try, too.” This is just the beginning of the struggle to adjust, but it all feels so realistic. From ridiculous disagreements over petty things to hurt feelings she is afraid to share...realistic is the one word I would use to sum up the transition, the whole book, to be honest. It is not always pretty or easy or what you expect it to be, but it is real. And it is beautiful. Even when it hurts so bad you are certain you will never smile again.

I will wind up my review here before I lose my battle against spoilers, but I will say it has my absolute highest recommendations. I have told everyone who sees my words that this book HAS to go on their must read list, and that it has been my most anticipated read of 2016. This book hit my emotions, my very soul, like no other book ever has. I read hundreds of books every year and I have never said that about any other book. That is my true testament to just how astoundingly amazing I think this book is.

One thing you can always count on when reading books by Marisa Oldham, is that she won't always play by the rules and give the reader what he/she wants. Instead, she gives you something better. Something more. Something real.

Learning to Breathe is no exception. It is BY FAR my favorite book by this author to date. It was written as a spin-off to her Falling Series (also fabulous btw), and takes you through Michelle Hathaway's romantic journey and personal growth. The book is about coming into your own, taking chances, fighting for love, and... learning to breathe.

This book will have you laughing, crying, and fanning your hand due to the "heat"... all at the same time. You'll be screaming at the author at one point and worshiping the ground she walks on the next. It is a roller coaster of twists and turns that leaves you breathless and craving more.

I loved getting to know Michelle's love interest, Micah, that much better. He's sexy, funny, and loyal. A total book boyfriend. The reappearance of other Falling Series characters made my heart melt, too, but even if you haven't met them before, you'll also adore them.

This book can be read as a stand-alone, but I totally recommend reading the original series as well.

WOW!!!! Marisa Oldman has done it again. This book goes straight to the heart. Right away I had my box of tissue with me.
After I read The Falling Series and found out that Marisa was going to write a story about Grace's sister I was so excited.

Missy is such a great character. She is spunky, out-spoken, and just down right "The Cool Girl" . Her boyfriend Micah is her boyfriend for years, one and off.
Their story will make you laugh out loud, smile, get angry and make your heart ache.

This book spoke volumes to me personally. Marisa's writing simply amazes me. I have not read any books that have made me so emotionally involved will reading. Marisa brings you INTO their lives. Especially since Grace, Ian, and Jaden are still in the book. It felt as if I was one of the family.

Learning to Breathe made me analyze my own life. Marisa Oldman is a writer that gives her writing her all, you can feel it. Her words jump off the book and dive into your soul.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! ❤️. My hope is that everyone that picks up this wonderful book will feel a welcome into the lives of Missy and Micah!!!

This is a very special book. You can tell the author put her heart and soul into it, and it really makes Learning to Breathe unique. The story is as beautiful as the cover. Do you like to get all the "feels?" If so, this one does just that! I laughed, smiled with joy, cried, and felt in awe by the end of the story. Also, there are some steamy romance scenes! So, be prepared for a roller coaster of emotions. This one knocks it out of the park.

I've read the other books in The Falling Series, and this is a standalone, spin-off of it. Even though I love them all, this one is my favorite. I love the message the book sends, and how you just have to Learn to Breathe again. It speaks to me on a personal level and, for that, I'm grateful that I read this book.

This book is one amazing journey for your soul….
We know both Michelle (Missy) and Micah from The Falling series but never have been able to get to know them like we have in this book.
Michelle is a head strong independent woman who has a Gallery with her sister Grace and is also a very talented photographer who is head over heels in love with Micah.
Micah is guitarist for a very popular rock band comprising of best friends Jaden and Ian. He is the typical Bad Boy who falls for Michelle.

This book is so much more than just a romance novel taking you on a journey of their life, this book takes you on a journey of love, hope, total devastation and everything else you face when you find out a loved one is faced with the crushing news they have Cancer.
This book was the most heart wrenching book I have ever read and probably will ever read. It touched me on so many different levels I can’t even begin to describe them. With knowing someone who has been diagnosed with Cancer within my family I couldn’t believe how accurate this book was, it was so beautifully written but at the same time never once “prettying it up” for the reader. It was raw feelings that gripped me and had me crying to the point where my heart felt like it was breaking. It’s not often that a book has that much POWER within the words.
I cannot recommend this book loudly enough to everyone. It is the most powerful book I have read yet, and I am so thankful to have read it. Cancer is a terrible disease, to have to come to terms with, comfort those who are enduring it and everyone affected by it. Ut this book is so much more than that, it has moments of true torture, light-hearted moments that you laugh out loud to and moments that scream LOVE! <3 <3

5.0 out of 5 stars who finds a rocky road to love with Micah

I was privileged to beta read this book. This book is a stand alone but i would suggest reading The Falling Series first.
Michelle is a strong independent woman , who finds a rocky road to love with Micah. Before you start thinking, "typical romance"... STOP... and keep reading....
I have never read a book, that felt it was as much mine as it was the authors. This book has pieces that will parallel your life, and probably affect you in a way no other book has...or ever will. Life hands each and every one of us, happiness, hard times and loss. I have NEVER cried more while reading a book, and no, not because it was a typical romance, but because it was a journey through Michelle and Micah's life, and a journey through my life as well. Every piece of this book, every word.. has a meaning, a purpose and although it was one of the hardest reads in my life emotionally, it was the most wonderful one, as well.
This is a story of life, and how we handle all the great moments, as well as the not so great moments. It's a story that will be ingrained in your heart and soul forever. I could not help but to feel an emotional connection to this author after I read this book, like she was with me through the journey, every step of the way. It was as though she was watching my life, and decided to write a book about it. I cant thank you enough Marisa, for pushing through and writing this book, not only for you, but for all of us too. This will be classified as my top read of 2016 , as I already know, there will not be a book that will touch me ever, as much as this book did.

    Unbelievable writing!
This story is so full of love, loss and pain. Balanced beautifully by the hope and love that is found.
But have the tissues handy, you'll need them as it's a very emotional journey.
I would love to give this story more than 5 stars.

Slowly Michelle realises that if she ever wants to have her own happiness that she should stop putting up walls and let people in.
With the help of her friends and family though all her ups and downs they help her learn to breathe and live and love life again. An amazing story following The Falling Series.
