GREAT mystery and suspense!!!

GREAT mystery and suspense!!!
As a huge fan of the psychological mystery/thriller genre I was really impressed by AJ Campbell's debut novel "Leave Well Alone". It was well written and quite entertaining! The female protagonist Eva is a law student, pressing forward in life while plagued by a traumatic childhood. Her priorities shift after giving birth to a premature baby with a life- threatening congenital condition. Eva is driven to find her birth family and she has no idea what lies ahead! I am drawn to books with a psychological angle to the mystery. They require complex characters and enough background information to educate the reader and keep us guessing. AJ Campbell delivered! Some characters felt comfortable and familiar to me while others were way less predictable...This is one of those books that left me concerned and curious if I put it down. I loved the twists and turns. I thought I had solved the mystery at 80% only to be totally surprised a few more times in the end - which I loved! The story lines all came together surprisingly well, especially for a debut novel. I enjoyed AJ Campbell’s style. She uses realistic dialogue, a good tempo and just the right amount of embellishment. She sprinkles similes and metaphors throughout the book, allowing the reader to sense the locations – London at night, the English countryside, the neonatal ICU…. (I could even “hear” the monitors and IV pumps beeping) The point of view is first person, alternating between 2 characters. Eva's chapters are in the present while Jim's are many months later. It worked! The story culminates when both narrators are in sync, or close to it. I found myself trying to connect their stories and perspectives, all the while looking for clues to fill in the gaps. It all made sense in the end! Readers who enjoyed AJ Finn's The Woman in the Window and/or Lisa Jewell's "Then She was Gone" will love this book! “Leave Well Alone” is engaging and suspenseful. What more can we ask? I gave it 5 Stars, for the writing, the character development and the carefully crafted plot twists. I’d love to see more from AJ Campbell in the future! I have purchased the paperback and Kindle versions. I am reviewing an ARC, received pre-publication order to provide an objective review. I am in the US and the author is in the UK. We have only "met" informally through a social media account.

This was a very interesting read about how lies among family can very easily come back to haunt the future. It was nice to see the characters of Eva and Ben grow and change with the new information about their family, though Ben worried me with his quick attachments. Then again, it made sense for the character and what he's gone through since childhood. Overall, the story was well-done even if it felt a little rushed toward the end, but I will be looking for future works by this author.

This was a good book I just felt a bit let down by it. I expected so much more than what I got. As I read along, I kept waiting for something more twisted or sinister to happen. The twist at the end was surprising but the lead up to it was dry. I never felt anxious to learn what was happening next or the need to read 'just one more page' before I left it to do something else. I didn't get that rush, there was no suspense nor anything gripping about this book. It's one of those books you read just to fill time while you're waiting to do what you actually want to do. I know the author put a lot of work in this but for me, it missed its mark.

This is a story type I generally don't like or read. I did enjoy this book though even if it was a bit long winded. I was so convinced it would have happy ending for some reason as the main male character was so endearing. It is worth a read. Four well deserved stars.

What an intriguing story AJ Campbell has written. the story itself is well developed and most definitely keeps the reader on their toes wanting more of what's to come. A compelling debut novel to say the least once you think you have figured out what is happening the story takes a massive turn and you are at the edge of your seat once again! the main characters Eva and Ben are incredibly well developed throughout the story the way AJ braids the two is unique and entirely creative. Eva's character is gripping I felt like I was on this emotional rollercoaster of emotions with her as she tried so desperately to restore with her family. A psychological thriller indeed and a must-read! Congratulations to AJ Campbell on her debut novel!

I really enjoyed the storyline. Definitely a scenario that many people can relate to. And Ben & Eva were deeply hurt & affected by their mom's absence from their young lives, which forms a close bond with the reader. I could actually feel Eva's anger at the very thought of seeing her mother again. Yet Ben initiated the search for their mother , which surprised me because he had found her without talking to Eva first. Perhaps he was trying to spare Eva anymore pain if his discovery had not been a positive experience.
I was inspired how Eva's character learned forgiveness & attempted to form a relationship with mom. Her husband Jim was originally skeptical, but the bond between husband & wife was a dynamic theme throughout & his support allowed her to forge this new beginning.. Eva's happiness was Jim's paramount concern.
I like that the characters share separate insight to their feelings & perceptions throughout the story, which gave the reader more than a cursory glimpse into their lives. The pressures (especially for Jim), who was also a workaholic, had a profound affect on him but he concealed these feelings from Eva. Also , Jim's troubled relationship with his parents -mostly dad, and the negative family dynamics add to the plot ... Yes: a "WOW" factor emerges as Eva & Ben try to find their father on!y to discover dead ends & disappointments.
    But stay tuned.
Four stars because of the ending 😳

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this story. What a great debut novel!

My wife bought this novel from AJ Campbell on her kindle (she loves these psychological thriller, me less so) and after reading it in three days and loving it, she told me I just had to read it. I can't be doing with kindles so bought a 'proper' version and I have to say I thought it was an absolutely superb story. The characters were well crafted and believable and the story moved at such a pace that I just kept reading. I tried to work out what was going to happen (I came close once) but the author obviously likes to keep her readers on their toes with the twists and turns.
When I used to read these types of books 'back in the day', I would finish them and put them back on the shelf and that was it. With Leave Well Alone, I really want to know what happens next in Eva's life so I am hoping there is a follow on and soon. Great debut novel!!

Great human interest coupled with a sense that all is not as it appears. Even to say what I loved about it is to risk giving things away: suffice to say believable characters to relate to, human emotions that you wonder at times if they’re from experience not just research, and a family secret that keeps you guessing. I loved that the story wraps up whilst also leaving room for more in the future. Read it in a few days due to wanting to know what happens
