4.5 out of 5 stars 1,200 ratings

2019 IAN Outstanding Fiction Winner for LGBTQ Fiction **Not a Cliff Hanger**

His world was water and rhythm.
Hard work and drive kept Royal O'Connell one step ahead of his competition. His spot on the swim team, keeping his scholarship, was the only plan that mattered.
His world was ebony and ivory.
Natural talent and ambition set Camden Morgan apart from the other music majors. His dedication scoring him a full ride. Normally, their paths would have never crossed….
But when Royal meets his best friend's new roommate, his big plan and Camden’s controlled environment faces a variable that could destroy it all.
Attraction.
The world they live in had no room for error. That undeniable pull between them was dangerous and neither one of them could've prepared for the choice they'd have to make. Love isn't always an easy road and, when everything they've worked for is on the line, they'll have to decide if being together is worth the risk.

Absolutely and utterly beautiful. Let There Be Light is a stunningly honest and extraordinary coming of age romance. AM Johnson's words will captivate you and make your heart sing. I am constantly in awe of the poetry and magic she creates on the page and it was no different in Let There Be Light. Royal and Camden's story hooked me right from the start and didn't let go. There was so much beauty and tenderness in the vulnerability these characters displayed. The excitement, confusion, joy, and heartache of first love will resonate with all readers. I loved that the story focused on the journey of our characters - the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Each discovering who they are, accepting the things they cannot change, and coming out stronger on the other side. There was no unnecessary drama between Royal and Camden and watching them discover and sometimes fumble into love was so endearing and adorable. The ending wrapped things up on a positive note, but perhaps a little too neat given the world we live in today. For myself, it was perfect and I loved the overall feeling of hope that the author left me with. I could not have loved this next O'Connell chapter more and also the cameos from our favorite Avenues Ink characters. Declan and Paige were as wonderful as always (#parentinggoals) and they will forever have a special place in my heart. I'll be honest though, Kai definitely caught my attention and has me very, very, very intrigued. I am so excited for Indie's story next!

This was book 1 in the "Twin Hearts" duet. I don't read young adult, but this was a pretty good read that I also listened to on audio. This was a good coming of age story Royal O'Connell is a freshman in college on the swim team keeping his scholarship, was the only plan that mattered until he meets his best friend's new roommate Camden Morgan. Camden is a music major, and his natural talent has sets him apart from the others in his class. I loved how Royal easily accepted the attraction that he felt toward Camden and was ready to explore what he felt. Royal wanted to immerse himself in Camden. I also loved how confident he was, and how he tried to instill that confidence in Camden. Camden slowly open up and become more confident. He didn't lock himself behind a closed doors anymore he made effort to be more present so he could spend more time with Royal. Their romance was sweet with butterflies and shy glances and secret touches. It was a slow build up into friendship, trust, and love. This book was low heat but that was ok. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling I also liked the narrators as I also listened to this book on audio. I am looking forward to reading and listening to the next book in this series.

Wow! I am in awe. I'm not even sure if I can find the words to properly describe this and all the feelings that come with it.

This is a coming of age college romance. The writing is captivating. It has a magical and poetic feel to it - Truly capturing the trepidation of new feelings, attraction, confusion, figuring out who you are and growing into yourself.

Royal is a freshman in college on the swim team and we get to observe as he meets and becomes completely enraptured by his new best friend's socially awkward, musical prodigy roommate - Camden.

I love how Royal easily accepted the attraction he felt toward Camden and was so eager to explore these new found feelings. He wanted nothing more than to immerse himself in everything Camden. I love how confident he was, and how he constantly tried to instill that confidence in Camden.

I loved watching Camden slowly open up and become more confident. He went from locking himself behind a closed door, sometimes not hearing his own voice for days at a time - to making such an effort to be more present just so he could spend more time around Royal.

Their romance was heartwarming, tender, and sincere - full of butterflies and racing hearts, shy glances and secret touches. It was a slow build up into friendship, trust, and love. It was just so beautiful to witness.

The spice is low, however they definitely have their moments - the emotions involved are described in great detail rather than the act itself.

My favorite parts involved seeing the world through Camden's thoughts. He equated just about everything to music…..

"Royal, he was too many instruments all in one, too many intricate notes, and I needed more time to hear each one."

"Royal was a cello, deep and smooth, and it was his melody that played the loudest."

"Freedom was a soft jazz piano playing in the background, the quiet acceptance of the stranger in the room. It looked like the boy I was in love with, tall and strong, sun-kissed hair, and tan skin."

I just loved everything about this!
We are left with a HFN, so I'm hoping to see more of them in Seven Shades of You (Book 2).

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and narrated!!!

Piano composer, Camden Morgan is caught up in his own world, barely interacting with his fellow students. He shares a college suite with the boisterous captain of the swim team and the two get on each other’s nerves. But when he meets his roommate’s best friend and fellow swimmer, Royal O’Connell, he finds me doesn’t mind letting Royal get under his defences. Royal is confused by his feelings for Camden, he’s never been attracted to another guy before, but he just can’t keep away.

I’ve loved all of AM Johnson’s books and this one is such a lyrical sports romance with so many beautifully written passages, especially the descriptions of Camden’s playing and performing! It’s also a gentle and very moving story with Camden learning to shake off the critical voices of his aggressive mother and ineffectual father while Royal summons the courage to own his feelings both privately and publicly with mixed results. Both young men are incredibly decent guys and I loved spending time with them and the secondary characters—so looking forward to Indie (Royal’s sister) and Kai’s story next. 🎧 Teddy Hamilton (as Royal) and Aaron Shedlock (as Camden) are such star performers, they took this great book to another level!

Wow. Royal and Camden's story was beautiful. The unlikely romance between the closeted pianist and the swimmer jock who has only ever messed around with a woman starts off behind closed doors.

Royal, with his twin sister Indie, and his supportive family, are unapologetically themselves. Letting his newfound best friend Kai in on his secret, he embarks on an epic journey of love in the halls of St. Peters College.

Camden, the forgotten child. He came out to his therapist mother at 16, and was quickly ushered back into the closet. Timid, painful shy and unwilling to put Royal's future in jeopardy he agrees to see where their romance can go, as long as it's in the shadows.

After Christmas break with Royal's family, they nothing have a newfound confidence in their step. Determined to be free from judgement Camden confronts his parents and Royal come sout to his team, with disastrous consequences. Can they make it through to the other side into a perfect symphony? Or will their love story be left unfinished, on a sheet of dusty music paper, left inside a closet never to be seen again?
