- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2019Format: KindleWell this was a big step outside my comfort zone but it has to be done. Every now and then I like to read something from a different genre to see if I am missing out on good books. This one was really different and it is not something I would have read usually BUT.... I was totally hooked by the time I was 20% into it. Even more surprising is that this book is the first fantasy book that Joanna Larum has written so a first for us both really.
Charlie has recently lost his beloved grandparents in a car accident and his family have moved to live in their house which is next door to Rosie. Charlie and Rosie soon become friends and life carries on until one day Charlie oversleeps and on his way to school he comes accross an old lady who needs his help. Help is what he does and she gives him a small cube. From then on Charlie's life becomes very surreal as he finds himself involved in a world of magic, mystery and evilness.
I love Charlie and Rosie their innocence comes accross perfectly in the book and I think their reactions and actions are perfect for their age while allowing for something a little extra to make them even more realistic.
I found the book very interesting and engrossing and I was soon turning the pages and willing the pair on to fulfill their quest. I like how they used their imaginations and how their different personalities balanced each other out perfectly to make for an interesting read which was an adventure through mystery and fantasy.
A really enjoyable read that will be perfect for young adults, children or anybody who likes fantasy and mysterious goings on.

In pre-historic times, all the evil in the world was imprisoned in a Casket and buried deep underground. Two families promised to provide Keepers for the Casket through the ages, to ensure that the evil didn't escape to wreak havoc in the world. In our time, those Keepers are Charlie and Rosie and the Evil Ones are escaping! What do Charlie and Rosie have to do to prevent evil taking over the world? They are helped and occasionally hindered by a huge dragon and a beautiful Elf but someone will have to pay the price for keeping our world safe.
A very enjoyable read with some great characters. Brilliant. Even has a talking dragon. 4*.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and magical book.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this book and although it may be aimed at younger readers I can see it being very popular with adults too. The reader is transported into a magical and hugely enjoyable storyline. Charlie has come to live in his grandparents house with his parents after their deaths. Rosie, who plays an important part with Charlie, lives next door. At the start of their adventure Charlie is on his way to school and meets an old lady in a purple coat who is running away from a man and is very frightened. She presses into his hands, a small stone shaped roughly like a cube and with a purple haze over its surface. He arrives at school late but his teacher surprisingly doesn’t tick him off but instead explains about the cube and and tells him a strange story about good and evil. His task is to plug the casket so so more evil can escape from it. He joins forces with Rosie and they find out both of his grandfather and her grandmother had helped when his grandfather had been Protector of the Cube. This position has now passed to Charlie. This is the start of a wonderful story where they meet magical figures and have great adventures in Charlie’s role as protector of the Cube. I really hope there is a sequel to this book and can really recommend it to readers of all ages who enjoy some escapism and magic. I also think this book would make a wonderful film.

4.0 out of 5 stars I loved this intriguing story with all its mystery steeped in ancient history.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt was such a pleasant change to read a fantasy meant for young people, to take me out of the adult world and plonk me straight into a world where children can do magic and a dragon exists – I just love dragons, especially ones like Taxus.
Charlie and Rosie have a huge task ahead of them and to their amazement they find themselves able to do things they never dreamed possible. I like that the story is set in the ‘real’ world, in a fairly ordinary situation, in an ordinary house and school. And yet, deep down inside, don’t we feel that ancient standing stones and similar possibly hold ancient secrets and powers that we don’t really know about?
I loved this intriguing story with all its mystery steeped in ancient history.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a magical book
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTwo children Charlie Phillips and Rosie Taylor. Charlie walking to school sees a lady in a bright purple coat then she disappeared. On arriving in school Mr Turtle old tortoise asks him if he is keeping the cube safe and things start to happen Mr Turtle has stopped time to disgust the casket and the cube. This book is all about time, I found it enchanting to read. It's a book for all ages. Charlie with Rosie raid the attic finding a letter from his grandfather Charles Aloysius Phillips the letter endorsed of how to control the cube with magical powers from his mind and Rosie 's they both have to work together. A purple Dragon called Apertaxus Taxus ,A elf called Elspeth guide both the children. This book turns into an adventure making things happening, a great book for Halloween and Christmas. Time travelling, full of humour, I really enjoyed it and so will many other. It's so absorbing as you read bringing a sense of calmness I really loved it .
