A Light in the Darkness: (In Darkness Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,352 ratings

Felix and Lane are trying out their new normal. Normal means no more car chases, no more drug lords, and definitely no more kidnapping bad guys. All of that is a thing of the past in this new, normal(ish) lifestyle filled with family get-togethers, torturous jogs through the park, and the occasional romp in the parking lot. Felix is done stealing (except for the cat). He’s actually enjoying the boring side of life, especially with Lane by his side doing what he does best: looking handsome.

But when Felix’s brother wants to repair their relationship, he brings with him a secret that could cost all of them their lives. Lane isn’t complaining because thrilling, life-threatening situations are right up his alley. They think they have a handle on the situation, but what they don’t know is that someone has been working them from the shadows, forcing them to do exactly what he wants as he drives them closer to his sinister game of life and death.

A Light in the Darkness is 82k words of snark, kidnappings, and poorly planned heists.

It's so hard to give a review without spoilers. Just trust me, whether you read or listen to this book, you will not be disappointed. It's hilarious, suspenseful, touchingly sweet and just well done. Joel Leslie does a phenomenal job with the narration. What a great series! One more book to go. I. Can't. Wait.

I love this series! HIDDEN IN DARKNESS had me reading into the early morning. A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS, I, at first, thought was going nowhere but it was nice reading about Lane and Felix again. Felix, as before, is quick with the snark, irreverent and inappropriate but very funny and Lane is his bulwark, protector. They stand together. As it turned out, the author was just reeling us in with the slow beginning because suddenly, pow! I was on the edge, breathing hard, angry, anxious, couldn't read fast enough. Get both books! They're good! 5* for this series.

Felix and Lane are now an established couple trying to figure out life. However, that’s more difficult than they ever could have anticipated when Felix’s family gets involved in his life, and a dangerous stalker starts playing a game of life or death with them. Like the first book, there is a ton of humor, snark, and sarcasm in every page. I found myself laughing out loud and enjoying myself immensely as I read the book. This humor may not be for everyone, but if you do enjoy this type of witty and dry sarcasm and snark, then you won’t be disappointed – I wasn’t.

The plot was full of danger and suspense. Don’t think too much on whether it’s realistic or not – this is a book that’s made for entertainment the same way action movies are meant to entertain. Felix and Lane are well developed characters, and their relationship is so strong and beautiful. I loved their banter and how they showed each other their love through actions both little and heroic.

I also listened to this book as an audiobook after I read it. Joel Leslie once again knocks it out of the park. His performance is perfect and really emphasized the suspense and tension that the plot demands. I loved it.

Overall Rating: 5 Stars. The writing was wonderful, the plot was interesting, and the characters are so engaging that I fell in love with them. There’s not a single thing I did not like about this book. I highly recommend it.

Felix and Lane just keep getting better and better. From navigating their ongoing love, the drama of Felix's brother, the the complete awesomeness of Lane's family, Felix's penchant for finding trouble, and of course their wicked banter there is absolutely nothing to not love.

It is characters and stories like Felix and Lane that I've come to classify as "snark and cuddle". By snark and cuddle I mean they pull no punches in their banter and dialogue but you never doubt for even a split second that it comes 150% from the heart. They appear to fight and get on each other's nerves but it's done with such deliberate tones of love that it's just a part of who they are, without the banter the love wouldn't be there. To some people it comes across as mean and spiteful but as someone who grew up in a household with that kind of banter(on a much smaller scale of course) I can spot it a mile away which is why I loved these two men from the very beginning.

As for Felix's brother, well the less I say about him is probably better because Darius is the kind of character you have to experience to understand. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to hate him, I wanted Felix to get Lane to "work his magic" but I couldn't help but feel there was more going on then what the author was letting us see and boy was there more going on! That's it! No more in that department you'll get from me other than: when you thought it was over it is so not done. #sorrynotsorry😉😉

I had been hearing great things about Alice Winters' work from friends who's opinions mattered to me and I respected but I never took the plunge until this past November when book 1 came up in 2 different posts I made in a FB rec group. I absolutely LOVED IT!!!! Because of the holiday I only read book 1 but 2 & 3 were at the top of my 2020 list. Now I'm off to read book 3, can't wait to see what's next for Felix and Lane.

Ok so this is the second book in this series. Although you can read the first book alone since it isn’t a cliff hanger. But this book needs you to have read the first one since that is where Felix and Lane’s story began.

Now I will say I haven’t read anything by the author before. But having read this story, I am searching for every book she has out there. The dialog is superbly well written and Felix is snarky, smart and funny. I laughed out loud so often I teared up and snorted a few times (oops). The book was excellently edited, no pesky grammar or spelling errors that disturbed the reading flow. Additionally, the author wove a griping story line paralleling the romance/relationship developing between Felix and Lane. Romance stories are great, but when that is the only story line in the book...yawn. No this book. Not this story. It was funny, intelligent, heartwarming and fast paced.

I stumbled upon this book through my Kindle Unlimited list, but after reading it I went and purchased both books in the series for my library, so I can reread it and laugh over and over again. I strongly recommend this book. Go ahead and read it for yourself and spend some time laughing.

I admit that I didn't like this one as much as the first book. The brother drama really annoyed me. And Felix constantly forgiving/being gullible about him was frustrating. I enjoyed the time spent with Lane, and the family banter, but the "mystery" was over-the-top, silly, and weirdly a bit boring. It really made no sense. Not sure I'd recommend this one.

Loved Felix and Lane! In this book two we get more bantering between them, we met Lane's family and learned more about Felix's, all while witnessing their relationship get stronger and sweeter. They made a wonderful couple, and their love is just perfect regardless their mistakes and challenges. Loved It!

“Do you want to play a game?”

4.0 out of 5 stars Less action but still good
Reviewed in Brazil on July 23, 2021
Well the title says it all... we have our cute romantic and funny as hell of a couple but with less action (all kinds of it, if u know what I mean). I love how Felix humours through almost everything and I admire how Lane takes it and pretty much always have a quick and sharp come back that makes it all the better, because I would lose it real fast. I got out of it some really good knowledge about Shakespeare, how to stab a person with a fork and save myself from a break in and the fact that the rules for the blind fight club were written and no one could read it. Yeap. I can say it was an enjoyable reading that I recommend and can't wait to start the next.
